    Hi,

Does anyone know of any garages in the Galway city area that open late, say until 7/8pm?

    Thanks

Try ringing some of the indys mentioned in this thread. I don't know anyone by heart open that late but some will do evenings by appointment.

Hi there, I was on route from Dublin to Galway and about 5 mins from Galway on the motorway my windscreen wipers stopped working completely and will not move. It was like the wind affected them but I was wondering if any mechanic that is available today to look at it fix the problem hopefully as I need it done by tomorrow????

Yes I wonder if there are any garages open tomorrow Christmas Eve as I need to get the Wipers fixed. I have rang a couple of garage numbers hoping they would have their opening hours for Xmas on a voicemail but none of them do??

  • Registered Users Posts: 81,223 ✭✭✭✭biko

Sometimes the linkage unhooks and can be fixed easily DIY.
You can start a thread in Mechanics DIY forum if you want to give a go yourself.
You'll need to say what make the car is, year etc. Does the wiper motor still make noise even though the wipers do not move?
Could be the fuse if this isn't the case.

    Hi,

I have a car which needs two electric related pieces of work done to it. I've gone to a city based garage over the last year, have had parts replaced and now have gone again within 12 months. There was also a lot of work done on my behalf to source the parts which the garage was slow to take up on at the time and which leaves me a little hesitant to return to them for the latest repair. They relate to the electric window and the heating system with a Saab 93 (2004). Any recommendations for garages/car electrics specialists who have know how and access to these type of electrical repairs? Kinda stuck for Galway options as Cunningham Higgins are off the scene.....

    Cheers

try gus in liosbaun, across from the golf shop. used to be called galway tyre centre, beside woodcut. if he cant help, he knows who can.

Perhaps the audio guy in Ballyban Ind Est can help but tbh you should look for SAAB indys around the country to make sure you get someone who knows these cars inside out.

Hey guys. Can anyone recommend a decent place to get a basic service done and maybe do a bit of work with the exhaust as well.

    Cheers

You can do a service yourself and save some money. Otherwise there's many mechanics mentioned in this thread.

Looking for a mechanic to replace the cigarette light socket in a Skoda Octavia. I don't want to get ripped off either. Does anyone know the typical cost for this?

  • Registered Users Posts: 19 dev2

Hey Arnold. It's not a big job. I'm an independent mechanic. I can check it out sometime

Cheers Biko / Dan for the recommendations

In a bit of an annoying situation with my Car/Mechanic at the minute.

About 2 months ago my car broke down- Had to get it towed to the mechanic near where I live in Furbo, galway. He said it was the timing belt that went, and that there hadnt been any damage to the engine. So he ended up having to replace the timing belt, pump, Pulley and gaskets. Cost about 600 euro for all that, and he had the car for over 3 weeks.

Then about 2 weeks after I got the car back it broke down again. Had it towed back to the same guy. He said that all the parts he put in were fine, but the bolt that holds it all in had been sheered off. This was around Christmas so he said it would be around the 27th or so before he could check what damage had actually been done.
This time when it broke down it had done a lot of damage. He said most of the valves in the engine had bent, Head gasket was gone, and the whole engine had lost pressure. Then he said he would have to wait to hear from scrapyards when he could get the parts and how much they would be.
He said he would try and keep the labor cost minimal because he just gave me back the car, so he then gave me a quote of approx 300 euro for the new parts.

All this I was expecting, but since I sent the car back to him the second time he has had it for nearly a month and a half!

Every time i ring him he says 'Oh sorry I got the wrong parts the first time so im waiting to get the correct ones'. Every other time i ring him he'll say 'it will be ready tomorrow and I'll give you a call when its done'. He's been saying the same thing pretty much every other day for about 3 weeks of the time he's had it.
I told him at the start of this week that I need it by friday at the absolute latest, and of course he said it would be done before then. So on friday I tried ringing him but his phone was off all day.
Rang him this morning (saturday) and he said he found another part that needed to be replaced (the rocker?) and that he has been in scrapyards yesterday and this morning looking for them with no luck. So he says it will be monday before I get it.

Anybody else ever have problems like this? I know im cursed when it comes to cars, but this is ridiculous!
I was thinking of calling him on monday and telling him that if its not ready the next day for me that i will send a tow truck to collect it and not pay him anything.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

(sorry for the long winded post!)

Was the broken bolt a part supplied by him or already in the car?
Tbh, this is more a consumer issue than anything.

    What make/year is car?

  • Registered Users Posts: 54 ✭✭bedubaya

Was already in the car is what he said.
Its a 2004 Citroen Berlingo Multispace.

Tell him straight, you're at the end of your tether... You could try to get him to commit to lending you a replacement vehicle if he doesn't have it sorted by an agreed date. I'd also be lookin for a second opinion from another mechanic.

I need to get a service and some damage repaired. Preferably the same place within the city and cheap.

    Suggestions?

Could be worth having a look at this older thread.

Not sure about body repair but I've always found O' Farrells in Knocknacarra decent for a service

Theres a guy out in Menlo who fixed a bump and a few scrapes on my otherwise spotless car. He was cheap and quick and the car looks perfect again!

  • Registered Users Posts: 81,223 ✭✭✭✭biko

Autobody Moycullen are good for bodywork.

Service, just about anyone. If you're diy minded I linked to a thread with a walkthrough a few posts up.
    Oil - 40 euro
    Oil filter - 10 euro
    Air filter - 10 euro
Tools and oil tray - 25 euro
    Sense of accomplishment - priceless.

Otherwise have a look through this thread and see if there are recommendations close to you.
