    As they were directing traffic today, I seen the blues from a bit of a distance and decided to head over to get a few shots of the patrol car. A guy on the Garda bicycle was helping out too. Haven't seen Drogheda's Garda bicycle used in a long, long time. I wish it was used more. It looks the part.

    DDD1B04D36B8401E82CF5CC01E0321B1-0000333410-0002648865-00640L-22F5B9FFD7934F38B7A084884D840213.jpg

    EDIT: Speaking of looking the part, that car needs to be given a bit of a respraying or something. Look at the state of it. I photographed it last year in the station and it was the exact same. It's a good car to photograph because in the right situation it can kinda add a bit of 'character' i suppose (that it's battered and beaten) but jaysus, what's the point in having a new fleet of cool looking Toyotas if they haven't the money to fix the feckin' cars they already have (or dump them and put the money to use elsewhere).

    I'm sure the Gardai themelves realise this though, as I haven't seen that car out in a long time (much like the bike), so they probably keep it for all the quiet work. Desperately in need of repair, though.

    EDIT 2: Pix.ie seems to be having a small bit of trouble. If the photos not showing above, try here:

    Most of the mondeos like that are getting a bit tired at this stage 4 years of abuse will do that!
    As for money to repair not replace, it's daft! Our 05 Ducato van has had something like €40,000 worth of repairs done to it in the last couple years because they will pay running servicing costs but not an up front payment for a new van! In fairness they'd have nearly 3 new vans for what they spend on servicing it

    Well clearly some of the money they're pumping into your van should be getting spent on our Garda car. I realise the car could be mechanically fine (I've never driven it, after all), but it really looks disastrously bad. You rarely (never?) see cars in that condition in other Police services.

    Speaking of repairs;

    The contract with private company is not being renewed, but the clamping & towing will in future be carried out by city council staff.

    I for one am very happy to see the back of APCOA as I believe Privatization means less public accountability and more attention to financial profit.. and this will soon show itself with country clean also..
    as for the clamping

    "City manager Tim Lucey confirmed last night that the council will not retain the parking enforcement services of APCOA Parking Ireland Ltd when its lucrative €3 million three-year deal expires on January 4."

    it has been shown it was a total loss-making activity for the city council
    "The council is now drawing up a new parking control policy to kick in on January 5. The proposals include:
    The replacement of towing with a ‘relocation’ service. Cars parked dangerously, in loading bays or in clear-ways will be towed to nearby streets, with the owners incurring a €40 fine. It will eliminate the towing of cars to the city pound, which imposed a €160 release fee."
