Depends on what you mean by "struggle".

Training will always be hard, otherwise it's not doing you any good! By hard I mean you'll always be putting in effort, you should be feeling tired after a workout and you'll get teh occasional bout of DOMS, stiffness and a general overwhelming knackardness. So you'll always be struggling :D

    BUT!!

When you run round the corner in Dublin and see the finish line in front of you and have hundreds of people lining the street yelling and cheering then it will all be worth it. And sitting in teh pub afterwards wearing your finishers t shirt and having the medal round your neck in work the next day will make all teh aches and pains go away, I promise...!

And in a few weeks you'll still be feeling a bit stiff and achey but you'll be doing 10:45's rather than 11:15's. And a few weeks after that you'll still be feeling worn out but you'll be doing 10:30's

And in a couple of years time when you're aiming at qualifying for Boston it'll still be tiring...

    It never gets easier!

I can safely say that I will NOT be doing Boston or anything of the like :D
But sitting around afterwards with my medal around my neck and drinking pints is something that I intend on doing :D:D

Agree with Amadeus here the only way to improve is to stress the system once it no longer stresses the body a) you will stop improving or b) you will increase pace/ effort.
It is one of the great thing about running a person running max potential and doing 10 min miles can relate to the elite sub 4 milers because the share the same experience of pain and drive to better themselves.

    10th July 2009

    REST DAY

Was pretty tired yesterday so decided to take it as a rest day

    WEEK 3 DAY 3

    5 miles 58'38"

Had to take 3 breaks during the 5 miles. Finding it tough because my legs get tired.
Any one have any suggestions as to how to prevent my legs from getting so tired? They don't get sore thank god. Just tired :(
Have to say that I am not overly looking forward to the 5 mile in the Adidas Series next weekend. Have decided to get the train up so I'm defo not looking forward to being on the train at 0535 on Saturday morning.
I am however looking forward to crossing the finish line! :D

Forgot to add that I did core yesterday morning and again after my run today

There is no harm as you are ramping up in planing to walk for a minute every X minutes, example run 10 walk 1 or 2, as you become fitter increase the run and decrease the walk.
I know someone who completed the marathon by walking for 2mins every 2 miles, they got around in just under 4:30.

    Week 4 Day 1

    3 miles - 33'38"

Didn't feel too bad this time. Walked about 5 mins.
In the last mile I fartlek'ed (hee hee) a few times. Ran quickly for about 1 min x 3. The last time I attempted it I only managed about 20 secs each time so my fitness is obviously improving. Hoping to get my 9 mile done either tomorrow or Thursday and take Friday as a rest day before the 5 mile race on Saturday.

Recovery was good after the 3 miles today also and my legs feel great too although they did feel tired at some points during the run. :)

    Week 4 Day 2

2 miles not even worth mentioning! totally losing my motivation! Bored of running on my own and don't feel like I'll EVER be able to manage running a marathon. Still waiting for this whole "loving running" part to happen!

Managed to "celebrate" my crappy running with around 10 bottles of Bulmers!

    16th & 17th July
    REST DAYS

    18th July 09 - Adidas Irish Runner 5 Mile

Up at 4.45 this morning to get fed and into the train station for 5.20 am.
Got into Heuston Station at 8 and walked up to the Start/Finish area - good for loosening out my legs - not so good on the way back when I just wanted to curl up and sleep!!

Anyway - Mile splits as follows:

    Mile 1 - 10'12"
    Mile 2 - 11'34"
    Mile 3 - 12'06"
    Mile 4 - 12'01"
    Mile 5 - 10'29"

    Total - 56'22"

I managed to run all of the first 2 Miles. walked for about 1 min and then managed to get to the 2.5 mile(ish) mark when I started to fade a bit.... they I saw a mullet ahead of me!!!!!! Shane Byrne - there was NO WAY I was going to let a Leinster player finish ahead of me so it became a battle to the end to cross the finish line ahead of Shane! I still had to take occassional walking breaks but nothing more the 1 min a piece.

Delighted with my time - Had a crap week of training and woke this morning thinking I was fooling myself to think that I could manage to do the 5 miles in less than 60mins. My previous 5 mile time was 58'38" so PB for me :D:D:D:D:D
I also walked another 5 miles getting to and from the start/finish line :D

Going to be doing more training on the road for the next 4 weeks to prepare for the 10 mile. Defo taking in some hills on the way so that I can managed that horrible hill again next time (twice :( )

    Well done :)

Nothing like a PB to give you a nice confidence boost, and now you know what you have to do for the 10 miler in terms of doing a bit of hill work too.

Well done on the PB M.G. and getting up at 4.45 to race - the last time a Boardsie was up at that time to race, they got lost

Congrats on that MG. Well done!

I'm gonna have to train it up for the ten miler and prob half marathon if i can't convince friends to go up for the weekend. Do not exactly relish the thought of having to get a train at 5.20am *shudder*!!!

I'll be getting the train up for the 10 miler and i'm not sure what my plan is for the half yet
Couldn't be bothered driving up - I'll be too wrecked afterwards to concentrate on the road

Fair play to you MunsterGal, glad the first race was a good one and a pb.:) Still though, not surprised you beat Shane Byrne, that mullet must weigh him down somethin' fierce:D

Well done on the PB. Nothing like a Leinster man to motivate a Munster Gal!

Not so much that he motivated me... I just didn't wanna see a Leinster man cross the line before me lol. His time was faster though

    Rest Day

My legs were incredibly sore yesterday. It hurt just to try and stand. Relaxed for the whole day and tried to do a little bit of stretching.
Thankfully they are way better today. Heading out for a 3 mile later (on the road) and my dad is home this evening so FREE THERAPY on my battered legs... woo hoo!

Well done on your race Saturday. Out on the road now with you!

    Week 5 Day 1

3 miles became 2.7 and mostly of which was walking :(
Calf is still really tight, my foot is sore (which I am linking to my falling arches - I have special insoles on order to sort this out) Went out on the road and hated it - hills were horrible. worse than that in the phoenix park on saturday :(
Also walked in and out from work as well so 3.7 miles for today.
