I guess that's cool if you want to just get fitter in general.

Just thought since you are training specifically for a 10K run it might be more effective to get running. Even if it means; run for a minute, walk for 30 seconds, run for a minute, etc.

Well my main aim for the 10K is just to finish it. I'm aiming to get it finished in less than 80mins. I'll be doing the women's mini marathon on June so for that I'll just aim to break what ever time I set in the Great Ireland Run

Hey Munster Gal, Keep up the good work.

My wife was in the same boat last summer and started out with a couch to 5k training plan and found it very good. A quick Google search should get some plans for you. They start out with mainly walking, alternating with 60sec jogs, building it up over a few weeks until you are running more than walking.

Unfortunately she got slightly injured and had to rest up but she is back running again and has signed up for the Bupa 10k, told all her family and friends so she can't not do it now!!! She is doing well and ran 2 miles for the first time on Sunday Its all about sticking with it...Best of luck

    THanks Papamike!

I'm not expecting miracles over the next few weeks but to be able to meet the target of 80mins would be great

Did a 3 mile walk today. Not at my usual pace though as I was with my mother but did 3 miles in 46 mins. Reckon I could knock 10 mins off it on my own though :D

2.3 mile walk with mam again today in 36 mins (5 mins slower than my last 2.3 mile walk :( ) Might have to leave my mother behind and start walking again at my usual pace. Have another walk planned for tomorrow evening. Planning the 3 miles this time though! Also walking .5 of a mile to and from work (refusing to pay €75 per month for parking!!) So I've included this in my mileage as well as I'm walking it at my normal pace. Think I'm doing .5 to work in about 6 mins which isn't too bad.
Also planning on doing a 10k on Saturday and timing it....... Thinking of doing this once a week and trying to improve on my time and maybe start bringing in the jogging as well more often.
Only 7.5 weeks to go to the Great Ireland Run... still have alot of work to out in... damn the puppy and my mother holding up my walking ha ha:D

5.5 miles done today in 1hr 17mins. I was actually going for 6.2 miles but I'd managed to miscalculate the route before I went. Did a little bit of jogging at the start but my legs got a bit tired so continued on a fast walk.

Keep up the good work :D
I've just started the Daniels plan (similar to couch to 10k)
Thinking of starting a log myself, then I'll have no excuse to miss a run! lol
    Well done!!!

My legs were a little bit stiff after the 5.5 miles yesterday so only managed 2.3 miles today with my mother.

Also just noticed that I missed out on logging a 3 mile walk on 12th February!! I'm so busy logging my miles on the 1000 mile challenge that I'm forgetting about my training log :pac:

2.3 miles walked easy with my mother. took about 35 mins.
Plan on doing another 5.5 to 6.2 mile walk next week and hopefully something over the weekend too

    7th March 2009

Haven't done any training for the last week as I've been sick and a bit run down so just taking it easy. Thank god I have a week off work Paddy's week so I'll get some longer walks and jogs in so I should be fine for the Great Ireland Run and need to put in some more serious training for the Women's Mini Marathon in June.
ALso have to start making up the mileage for the Challenge as well..... Stuck at 50 miles at the moment.

Well I haven't done anything since the beginning of the month due to being sick and just generally tired. Due to personal circumstances I'm pulling out of the Plassey 10k and the Bupa Great Ireland Run. Maybe when I get myself up and about again I'll be able to start running up a bit of mileage but don't have the will to eat at the moment let alone try to run.

Aww, sorry to hear, hope you feel better soon. I had to take 3 months off excersise over the winter. Getting back to health is the most imporant & take as much time off as you need :D

Hey MunsterGal, hope you are ok. Concentrate on getting better and take your time- you will eventually come back stronger.

Back to doing some brisk walking to and from work over the last couple of days. When I get myself sorted again might start walking in the evenings again next week. Still going ahead with the Women's Mini Marathon in June so need to get some training if for that also.

Just another two miles worked up walking in and out of the city to my car. Hoping that the weather starts to clear up a bit next week so I can start walking up another bit of mileage

Still just walking in and out of work at the moment. Was hoping to get out yesterday evening but had to work later than I'd intended. Finished at 4.30 today so hopefully i'll fit in at least 2.5 miles after work.

Another 2.5 miles worked up. I'm parking the car slightly further away to get more of a walk in. Definatley starting back walking in the evenings from Monday.

Another 1.5 miles to add for today :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,274 ✭✭✭Munster_Gal

2 miles done so far this morning. Planning on another 2.5 after work today assuming that the rain holds off.
Disappointed that I didn't do the Great Ireland Run yesterday but with my state of mind at the moment I don't think I would have managed it.
Just need to get focused now and aim for a decent enough 10k in June. I have no time in mind for it yet though as I'm still not sure if I am planning to run it. I'll see how my walking goes this week.

Another 3 miles to add to my mileage this week. Still not hitting the miles that I want though. :( I have a 4 day weekend this weekend so I'll just have to make sure that I make the most of it

2 years ago I planned on running the Bupa 10km, I ended up walking it due to serious lack of training, it took me 90 minutes. Last year I didn't enter as I had just had my second baby! Anyway this year I trained and I ran the whole 10km in 64 minutes. It was a great buzz. I started training last Summer 'Couch Potato to 5km'. I found it really good. Within 2 months I could run 5km not very fast but I could run it. I didn't run over the winter and started back in February training for the Bupa, having a goal like the Bupa or mini marathon really helps. Also the fact that I had told my husband and all my friends i was doing it was great motivation!;)

My main goal has now switched from the Mini Marathon in June to the Dublin Marathon in October. I have my new running shoes and tops ready, watch with HRM, and a training book on order. Starting Monday I'll focus on the Marathon training and hopefully the 10k will fall into place with this. I know I can walk 10k so with the marathon training I'll hopefully be able to jog some of it.Been quite lazy this weekend chilling out with my sister and nieces and with tomorrows Heineken Cup quarter final taking place all my attention will be focused on shouting at the TV making sure that we make it through to the semi's (my tickets for Edinburgh will seem like a bit of a waste if I won't be following the Red Army there!)I'm going to try out one of Hal Higdons 10k plans until I receive my book and then start the marathon training. I haven't decided on a target time for the DM yet. I'll wait and see how I get on in the Mini Marathon in June first (aiming for 70mins or less!)

you'll be on your own dear if you trying for 70 mins,,lol:pwait for me,,,:D

You should both be fine for 70 minutes anyway, an 11 minute mile would have you coming across the line in 68 minutes and I'm sure both of you can do that... or will by race day ;)
