    Design update:

Following further assessment undertaken as part of the design process, which included a road safety audit, peer review and traffic analysis, the staggered junctions on the Forramoyle and Trusky (Paintbox) Road have been changed to a combined overbridge junction. The drawing at the following link shows the new current design and proposed development boundary: GCOB-SK-D-816 – Na Forai Maola to Troscaigh

Description of the Design: The junction comprises of a link road north and south of the proposed N6 Galway City Ring Road (GCRR) that connects via a bridge structure that is located between the Forramoyle and Trusky (Paintbox) Road. The local roads will not have direct access onto the N6GCRR. The R336 Coast Road and the Bearna-Moycullen Road will be the closest access points. Vehicular, pedestrian and cyclist access will be maintained along the local road network and will be segregated from the mainline traffic of the N6 GCRR. The link roads and bridge structure will have one lane in either direction with a hard shoulder on either side. The junctions on the local road will not be signalised junctions and will not include road lighting.

IMO. Galway has serious issues which a bypass will simply not resolve. My view is that the money should be allocated to Galway as follows.

    1. The density of approach roads from the East is appalling. All the traffic from the N17, N18 and N6 gets funnelled down 2 routes. Something needs to be done by adding more roads and connecting them. Create a grid system in the East of the city which will distribute traffic better.

    2. Grade separation on some current junctions is needed. It's a mess of at grade roundabouts at the moment.

    3. Lay the foundations for some sort of BRT system including a dedicated bridge over the river. Galway is the perfect shape for one single line to make a massive difference.

    1. Soon to be only 1 road!
    2. Agreed, but tricky to avoid crowding surrounding areas.
    3. There's already a new bridge being built over the river. Repurpose the Quincentennial for BRT.

Design update in the vicinity of the N17 (until November) Tuam Road

    Link: http://www.n6galwaycity.ie/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/GCOB-SK-D-823.pdf

    Description
Following further assessment undertaken as part of the design process, which included a road safety audit, peer review and traffic analysis, the design has been updated in the N17 Tuam Road and Twomileditch area to incorporate the required changes. The drawing at the following link shows the new current design and proposed development boundary: GCOB-SK-D-823 – N17 Tuam Rd Junction and Parkmore Link Rd Junction Plan Layout

Description of the Design: The N17 Tuam Road Junction layout has been modified by removing the double eastbound and westbound slip roads. The junction retains full movement with access provided in all directions when combined with the Parkmore Link Road Junctions. Dual lanes in either direction are provided on the existing N17 Tuam Road in the vicinity of the junction to enhance capacity. The drainage design has also been updated to reflect these design changes.

Each time they re-design a junction on this scheme, it looks more and more of a mess - with all sorts of associated side roads having to be provided/amended as well, this has to add to the costs.

I don't get why they don't just build the whole thing to top motorway standard from the outset...have we learned nothing about these projects?

Galway at gridlock the past few days..

Yes agree Des. But galway continues to expand with little or no planning forcing folks to commute. So a sign of things to come..

A very good question, because as it stands it doesn't come into contact with any motorways so there is no case for a motorway order for slip roads like with the Dunkettle Interchange.

They must be planning on designating the N6 from J19 to Doughiska to motorway. Presumably this wasn't done in first place because Doughiska is a roundabout.

We won't know for sure until Q3 when the maps are published.

Makes sense but the M8 and M9 also end at a roundabout.

Would be fantastic if the motorway regulations were extended west as far as the N59. It's the one ring road in Ireland with the highest capacity and similar routing of an alternative route.

ARUP confirm N6 Ring Road will be shovel ready by 2021.

Upto the Government to fund it after that

I'll probably be retired before that's open, So glad I don't work in Galway.

I would not be confident of that date at all. They stated 2021 from a statement in 2016 sometime? ARUP, NTA and the Councils have been pushing out original scheduled dates all the time since this project has started. A quick glance at http://www.n6galwaycity.ie will confirm the same.

Here's the latest design update for the N6 Galway City Ring Road:

    http://www.n6galwaycity.ie/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/GCOB-SK-D-751_Proposed-Road-Development_1_5000-Scale_OS-Map_RevI6_15-August-2017.pdf

Not sure when this was changed but the mainline of the N6 now appears to flow directly onto the new ring road, raising the possibility that this scheme may be declared motorway.

Zero chance of it being a motorway, the road it links into is already non-motorway.

It won't be hard to upgrade the existing N6 between Coolagh roundabout and Galway airport, it's motorway in all but name!
    New signs, 120kph limit...done.

The stretch in question is also wide enough to be 3-laned the whole way to Rathmorrisey, as well.

The 90-degree bend at Doughiska might be too sharp for motorway. Apart from that I don't see any impediment to Oranmore-N59 getting blue signs. Now's the time to decide before any work has taken place.

It'll probably be a 100kmh speed limit through Doughiska, so it shouldn't be a problem.

I would've imagined that the road would be fully suitable for 100km/h along its length bar the 2 tunnel sections which will likely be 80km/h.

There is no need for 120km/h along the route because it has frequent exits and is quite short anyway.

Motorway restrictions make sense given that pedestrians and cyclists can use the existing N6 Bothar na dTreabh, there is a clear alternative route and it would stop the new road turning into the ****heap the existing N6 has become with shopping centres and other traffic magnets.

This is costing €600m. It should be done 100% right for once and for all.
