Anything's better than those SuperValu "pretend" supermarkets, that all seem to be owned by some local fat bloke.
    +1

Agreed. You ever been to Kilkenny City?

The journey would take much too long after having to take a detour round our own personal local fat bloke in Kerry - like a grounded Zeppelin, he is! :D

There are many supervalu empires around the country not just in Kerry. The local one here is on the county council. Handy for when a competitor tries to open up.

BECAUSE a friend of mine works in Dunnes and was called in for a general staff meeting where they were told by the manager that the ASDA/Walmart take over was "bull****" and that the meeting was instead all the time to do with discussion over Christmas.

Which of course smacks of absolute horse****, I worked there for two years and never once was there a meeting to talk about Christmas. .

All the area managers do get together every year to plan ahead for christmas. They go over the previous years sales and set targets etc for the coming year. Happens every year.

Yes, the SumoValu dynasties are well spread. Our man sobs on the phone to RGdata everytime he hears the word "Tesco" - they then do their damndest to block them, showing their concern for the poor consumers and how a big new Tesco store can only destroy the community, the very same community that SuperValu has fleeced supported over the years with its endless generosity, special offers, and coupons for three-legged coffee-tables! :(

I'd love if Walmart came to Ireland and have everything under the one roof with Guns too. Man I love Walmart and the relativly hot lower class white chicks that work there for crap wages! I told the cashier one day that we have free health care, Minimum wage of €8.65 over $10, 20 days holidays and free education in Ireland as she could not believe it, she asked how to move there. This was in urban Utah in real Red America where such notions of Socialism are unheard of..... until Obama that was!

The new Dunnes will presumably try to get like Asda after copying M&S for years. Asda is not a good role model. Their range is awful (try reading a recipe and then buying the ingredients from Asda) and qualty is second to price. This looks a bad consumer moment.

I reckon the only big announcement to be made is that Margaret is retiring and the management will now be answerable to her son.

The family gets employment and a fortune in profits out of the company, why give it up?

The Roches I can kind of understand as they had another business for all the grandkids to transfer to, where would the Dunnes and Heffernans go?

I still think it might be sold, the Dunnes Head Office for the North and British Dunnes has been moved under Dublin control...ominous.

yep, that was in todays tribune. According to it, most observers think a sale of dunnes is a done deal.

    Why?

Anything that shakes up the retail scene is only a good thing.

That's what they said when Debenhams took over Roches. I worked for both and I can only say It wasn't an improvement anyway, for staff or customers.

They probably want to sell, but they wont get top dollar the way the markets are. They could probably sell for a billion now but would of got 2 billion last year before the credit crunch.

    WTF....

Seriously, are there any more Irish owned shops anymore???

I found out yesterday that Spar is German :(

Don't despair Centra is here (or just a walk away!).:D

It's owned by Musgraves and they are Irish.

That ain't true. There is a German word "Spar(en)", but the company Spar consists of independent stores that unite as Spar. The headquarters are in the Netherlands, where the company was born too.

Btw. - what would be bad about Spar being German ? ;)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SPAR tells you all you need to know (and more) about SPAR and it's origins.

if walmart buy dunnes i think they will not change the name to asda ,most likely it still will be called dunnes part of the walmart family

Its not going to be sold, its media speculation.

  • Registered Users Posts: 89 ✭✭Dooish

never going to happen as the size of the average dunnes stores would be to small for them. the majority of the stores in the north are classed as small with the exception of enniskillen and strabane and they are only classed as large.

when safeway took over the old wellworths stores in the north, the first thing they done was to cherry pick the best and sell the rest. the same would happen with asda, cherry pick the best and flog or close the rest.

i would say that a superquinn take over would be more likely than dunnes

I heard Superquinn are nearly gone too must ask my boyf again he told me. Any news about Dunnes yet they still keepin quiet?

ALDI plan to open over 30 new stores in the next 3 years. Will Dunnes have much choice in the end.The competition is increasing and the recession is making people very aware of prices.Dunnes will have to revert to their previous "better value" model or sell to ASDA.Either way ,shopping will be cheaper !

Lol, you seem quite sure of yourself.

All those recent 25% off sales apparent sole purpose were to make sales look better. They paid for this by cutting chunks out of the hours given to part time staff.. They have also apparently stopped rolling out new stores.

Note: the aggressive roll out of new stores was done so in order to put off any potential buyers. This decision has been reversed already apparently.
