Definitely drive the Mk 5 to get an idea of how the Mk 6 will drive. The Mk 5 sportline is a great drive, had one for 2 years. I'm very interested in the Mk 6 2.0L Tdi 110bhp, same drive as the Mk 5, improved materials inside (supposed to be Mk4 quality) €150 road tax plus easy on the juice. Don't go for the base model though, go at least comfortline.

There's no point in the OP driving the Mk 5 Golf or Mk6 Golf. The OP is a Golf driver and always will be by the sounds of it, so now that his question has been answered, we're all happy.

I've had three golfs and I certainly wouldn't buy any car without at least driving it and examining it in the showroom. Would you?

Surely thats the other way around.

I wouldn't, no way. But the OP seems like he is one of those Golf drivers who just wants another Golf, therefore he'll like it no matter what it's like.
Can't go far wrong I think the sentence included. Some people don't like thinking. They know a household name, always had one, so why change? I hate that attitude, but it exists. Therefore no point in sending them for a test drive.

Some people have no interest in how a car drives, just that its reliable and gets them from A to B. Theres nothing wrong with that. Not everyone is into driving. Some people would actually prefer a car thats softer and more relaxed, easier to drive.

I completely agree that there's nothing wrong with not having an interest in how a car drives. There is something wrong with defaulting to a Golf though. Softer, more relaxed cars are available than VW's offering. More reliable offerings come from outside the VW camp. Better value for money comes from outside the VW camp.
I also wonder at how someone who has zero interest in cars can think nothing of spending €25,000 plus on them, moreso when they're not exactly flush with cash (as in they don't exactly have it in their wallet!).

My point was that theres more to choosing a car than how it drives. Not specially about how it drives though ok I used that example. Theres, resale, maybe you liked previous ones, like the colour, the seats, controls, local garage is vw. Lots of reasons.

Keep the old one then! :D

Is there any GT version of this planned yet?

From what I can see, GT is just a trim level, so based on that, then yes, there will be.

Sounds like you have some issues mate...i asked for opinions on the new golf not a psychoanalysis of people who don't live for cars.

And you got opinions on the new Golf.
I don't have issues at all. I don't feel any need to spend €25k on mediocrity!

    :confused::confused:
And yet another thread on motors decends into bashing.
The OP asked opinions on the Golf, if you don't like it so just say why (which really could only be based on looks, as the car isn't even in the showrooms yet) and leave it at that.

I for one am interested in this car as it could be possibly one of my choices when I change next year. Threads here always seem to decend into pointless "debates".

For the sake of the children can we not just talk about the cars??

PS Biro this isn't personally aimed at you.

can you name a diesel model in a similar price range that in your opinion is better

From the same umbrella mechanically wise, Skoda Octavia and Seat Leon. From other umbrella's - Ford Focus, Mazda 3. Depending on what the range is in the price then throw in the Civic diesel too.

you honestly believe all of the above models would be a better buy than the new MK6 golf 2.0 diesel.

Honestly? Yes. Unless VW price the Golf very competitively, which they don't have a history of doing. We'll see though.

Appreciate the honesty...Not sure i agree though. All of the models you mentioned except the seat or ford ain't the kinda of style i'd be interested in. The civic must have been styled on some kind of star wars spaceship...

I'm a bit annoyed on the pricing front of the Mk 6.In the uk, the prices have gone up quite a bit as can be seen here.A 900£ rise, they say, thats about 1200e. A price rise is to be expected when a new model is launched but remember that one of the idea's behind the Mk6 was that is was to be cheaper for vw to build and, in turn, vw could pass on some of these savings to the customer.Obviously not in the uk.Cant see any extra kit being added either....

I hope we wont be treated as harshly over here

EDIT: In fact i've found somethng here

Quoted from that page, "It's also cheaper to build than the current model – savings which Volkswagen says it has been able to pass on to buyers."

Where are these savings i ask and how have they been passed on???

That was Honda's plan really, break the mould. I like it, but each to their own when it comes to style. The Kia Cee'd is a great car too with a 7 year warranty, and the Hyundai i30 is getting good reviews - both for a few bob less.
The Leon seems to have struck a balance between conservative and stylish, it looks quite well and will no doubt be getting the newer 2 litre TDi too.
The point is there's plenty of good cars out there. Don't assume that the Golf is the best. It might still be the one you want, but everything deserves a consideration.

Im sorry but thats just nonsense. So, do you believe that a 2009 Golf would compare badly to a 1992 one?

I am not a huge Golf fan, I have owned one myself and it is a good car with clearly defined attributes and compromised in some areas. But it suits the majority of buyers. I do concede that other cars offer better value for money.

But the Golf is a very capable car. To state otherwise is just plain silly.

Typical of any company really. Unless VW see that their sales are dropping then they won't do anything about it. If you press them on it they'll probably say something like "Look at this extra here that you're getting!". I wonder will there be more of a badge premium now that Porsche own 70% of them!
