    Hey,
Just wondering peoples view on the new VW golf TDi 2.0,thinking of putting deposit down soon. Looks like the price tag is approx 22,000 (with my current car) tax will only be 100e....due to its lower CO2 emissions.

    Any comments much appreciated. Cheers.

Its yet another in an incredibly long line of dull looking golfs. The ultimate in boring cars as far as im concerned.

I think its going to look good. Seems to be designed around the Sirocco front end. The rear is still very opel vectra estate looking.

Its looks good though depending on the paddy package. Be sure to get one other than just entry level otherwise it will look and feel pretty basic knowing VW previous offerings to the Irish market.

The interior has not changed much.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 935 ✭✭✭samsemtex

Its not ugly, but there is not one interesting design feature on that car. Not a single one. Interior looks quite nice alright.

    BORING.

I think you've just ruined the car for me:P

+1, go for the comfortline at least, assuming they are running the same models again.
What are you trading in? Do you know the rough value you are being allowed? That's if you want us to see if it's a good or not:D

I'd be very surprised if that TDi manages to get into the €100 bracket.

The 2L TDI starts at around €28K and goes right up to around €38K!

Lol, weird that, out of boredem a few mins ago i was on the Vw site "creating my own". You would get some car for 36K. Although when you drive it out the door it'll be worth about 25K lol!

Yeah, but that was the Mk V;).

The Mk VI is in band A for the 1.6 TDI 90, 1.6 TDI 105 Bluemotion(with just 99 g/km CO2) and the 2.0 TDI 110; the 2.0 TDI 140 is in band B, and FWIW the 1.4 TSI DSG 160 bhp is in band B for VRT too, which shows why turbocharging with direct injection is such a good idea for petrol engines.

I sincerely hope not, I would have thought the 2.0 TDI 110 would be the smart choice. Then again this is Ireland, and we like our cars to be as underpowered as possible:mad:!

cheers for the opinions people..i'll be trading in a 99 golf petrol comfortline and getting the comfortline type..

do have some reservations about putting a deposit down on car without driving it but its not as if i'm buying 50k worth a car...can't go to far wrong with a golf as some posters say 'boring' but i ain't no boy racer just want a decent car

oh and its defo 100e tax, its dropped its VRT class from 16 to 14

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,158 ✭✭✭✭Berty

If you like the car go for it.

Some people here dont like VAG and most dont like Jap Crap. You cant please all the people all the time.

    Buy with confidence I say!

What colour is the golf? Mileage etc.? Is it a 1.4? How much are you being allowed?

black 1.4 petrol 80k on clock (but that could be the second clock, me thinks). Some kinda of deal on at moment, if you trade in and put deposit down 7.5% discount plus trade in value of my car

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,147 ✭✭✭E92

    OP: drive the present Golf.

The new one has the same chassis, so it'll be pretty much the same to drive, which is good news because the present one is a fine car to drive.

And go for the 2.0 TDI, yes there's a 1.6 TDI coming in March but you might as well get the extra performance and no road tax penalty to boot!

The 2.0 TDI 110 should cost about €24,000 btw, with the 1.4 petrol coming closer to €22k, but the 2.0 TDI will save you €198 on motor tax a year, you'll have a car with vastly superior performance, it'll cost less to run every time you drive it and will get every last cent of its extra cost when you try and sell it on, as diesels are infinitely more desirable than petrols come resale time, especially now that petrol is 8 c a litre dearer thanks to the recent budget changes.

Sorry for going OT a little..

but petrol is actually cheaper around these parts again.. or in some other cases, level pegging.

On a trip out today, the local Tesco was 114.9 for Petrol and 116.9 for Diesel. 2 Maxol stations were both 117.9 for Petrol & Diesel and an Esso station was 115.9 for both Petrol & Diesel.

Sorry, I worded my sentence badly. I meant to say that the Government has hiked the price of petrol by 36.4 cent a gallon(or 8 cent a litre), thereby implying that there's never been a better time to switch to diesel(though I've always preferred petrol, and if I were buying a Mk6 Golf in the morning I'd have the 1.4 TSI 160 with the excellent DSG gearbox with the 16% VRT and all), especially given how much better the 2.0 TDI is likely to be over that hopeless 1.4 petrol.

Hasn't the MkVI lost the fancy rear suspension of the MkV?

make no mistake aobut it that 1.6 diesel golf is gonig to be hugely popular on our underpowered roads! loads and loads of GT 1.6 diesel entry level golfs,or R Line 1.6 diesels.

I think Vw ireland are finally going to flog the R line brand with the mk6 in ireland,im surprised it hasn't happened yet,R Line is huge in germany,it would really tap into that whole cant afford an S Line audi keeping up with the jones vibe of the post celtic tiger, post recession pre celtic tiger 2.0 ireland :D

Definitely drive the Mk 5 to get an idea of how the Mk 6 will drive. The Mk 5 sportline is a great drive, had one for 2 years. I'm very interested in the Mk 6 2.0L Tdi 110bhp, same drive as the Mk 5, improved materials inside (supposed to be Mk4 quality) €150 road tax plus easy on the juice. Don't go for the base model though, go at least comfortline.

There's no point in the OP driving the Mk 5 Golf or Mk6 Golf. The OP is a Golf driver and always will be by the sounds of it, so now that his question has been answered, we're all happy.

I've had three golfs and I certainly wouldn't buy any car without at least driving it and examining it in the showroom. Would you?

I wouldn't, no way. But the OP seems like he is one of those Golf drivers who just wants another Golf, therefore he'll like it no matter what it's like.
Can't go far wrong I think the sentence included. Some people don't like thinking. They know a household name, always had one, so why change? I hate that attitude, but it exists. Therefore no point in sending them for a test drive.

Some people have no interest in how a car drives, just that its reliable and gets them from A to B. Theres nothing wrong with that. Not everyone is into driving. Some people would actually prefer a car thats softer and more relaxed, easier to drive.

I completely agree that there's nothing wrong with not having an interest in how a car drives. There is something wrong with defaulting to a Golf though. Softer, more relaxed cars are available than VW's offering. More reliable offerings come from outside the VW camp. Better value for money comes from outside the VW camp.
I also wonder at how someone who has zero interest in cars can think nothing of spending €25,000 plus on them, moreso when they're not exactly flush with cash (as in they don't exactly have it in their wallet!).

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,056 ✭✭✭✭BostonB

My point was that theres more to choosing a car than how it drives. Not specially about how it drives though ok I used that example. Theres, resale, maybe you liked previous ones, like the colour, the seats, controls, local garage is vw. Lots of reasons.

I don't have issues at all. I don't feel any need to spend €25k on mediocrity!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,317 ✭✭✭lafors

    :confused::confused:
And yet another thread on motors decends into bashing.
The OP asked opinions on the Golf, if you don't like it so just say why (which really could only be based on looks, as the car isn't even in the showrooms yet) and leave it at that.

I for one am interested in this car as it could be possibly one of my choices when I change next year. Threads here always seem to decend into pointless "debates".

For the sake of the children can we not just talk about the cars??

PS Biro this isn't personally aimed at you.
