Can anybody help identify this dragonfly that I found dead in the garden? I've never seen dragonflies here before, we get plenty of damselflies but never big monsters like this!

I'm not great with Dragonflies but it could be an Emperor Dragonfly; although the green on the abdomen is throwing me.

Females are more green than blue on the abdomen according to NBDC guide.

    That's it alright!

For some reason the tail looks more green in the pictures I posted earlier. It's definitely as blue as in your post there.

    Mystery solved, thanks folks!

We have a veritable glut of damselflies around here, this year. It's amazing to see them, it's like watching air ballet. :)

Catching up with some holiday pictures while recovering from surgery, what's temporarily keeping me with very limited options for birding.

These are from Galicia, Spain, earlier this month. Not great photos but nice to see some new species.

Rock lizard, Turtle Dove, Cirl Bunting, Serin, Waxbill, Sardinia Warbler, Sistin Cisticola

Sardinia warbler. I wasn't going to keep that photo (poor quality) until I was told they are quite secretive and difficult to photograph.

And I actually went back to try to get a better shot, but nope...

For the record I also ticked Nightjar (loads) and Scops Owl (one), but both only at night. Their calls are very distinctive so if they are there they are not difficult to find. I tried to find the late evening to at least get a record shot, but again, no luck.

Cooooool!! It is like a treasure hunt, only better! :) And scops owls sound to me like the warning house alarms give as you're getting out, 'BOOP! BOOP! BOOP!' (if you hear them from far away, but close up they sound quite different, they're incredible! I've heard them before alright, but I've never seen them).

Talking about treasure hunts, sometimes you just strike gold without even trying. :) (Ok, this is gold on a beginners level, but I'm still very happy I got to see it up close).

I know the quality is rubbish, it was taken with my oldish mobile phone. The net curtain underneath doesn't help, either.
