I was pretty much told that the idea was to avoid people coming in their best suits etc only to get them crumpled - i.e. it was a medical as opposed to an interview, so something comfortable, neat, and easy to get on and off!

As to my medical - sailed through everything but hearing test. Could hardly hear anything over my own heartbeat! Not hopeful.... If I fail on those grounds can I get my ears syringed (and commemorative candles made perhaps) and repeat the test? Or am I sunk depsite the best performance I've ever gotten in this treadmill :(

Hi folks I've not posted here before, I was just wondering if one of you can help.

If you pass the medical is there a certain time period i.e. if a year has gone by and you haven't heard, do you have to apply again? In terms of time what is the typical cut off point?

I noticed the new campaign has started does that mean people who have passed the medical from the previous campaign should apply again or does this sort of thing overlap?

Hope that makes sense and thanks in advance for any replies! :)

Definitely you should apply again for the new intake as they overlap, most of the places for C15 have not been allocated yet as the intakes will be going on for several more months.

Call the main switchboard 90650222 and ask for Occupational Health Unit. Pretty certain their direct line number would also have been on the initial appointment letter you would have received.

It took 4 weeks for my letter to come through. I have heard of others taking longer and factoring in the Xmas holidays it is possible they are still processing it, especially if there was anything of concern that they would require clarification from your GP, physio etc.

    Good luck with the call.

    Passed my medical :D

Havent heard back from vetting yet though and I have a conviction i'm worried about.

surely they would have disreguarded me before now if it was going to stop me from joining?

how long after medical do you usually get the the call?

could be months before you get the call!! people have been waiting since the summer!!

hard to tell in previous campaigns people have got in with merit near 1000 (rc) and 500 (non rc) so it is hard to tell especially when someone with a merit of 200 (non rc) got a letter saying it would be september 2010 before they heard anymore but got a medical and vetting forms sent out there recently. it really hard to tell. a girl with a merit of 550-600 got in there in february!

the doctor asked me to lay flat on my back and he held my leg and moved it and twisted it to test the joints.

also asked me to stand on one foot then go up onto my toes.

    iirc that is all :)

    hey

I was wondering, if my BMI was over 30 at the time of my assessment would i fail?

Plan to apply next year but my i was looking at the medical standards and my BMI is just over 30.
I'm also worried about where it states that if the candidate appears overweight on assessment then they will fail. does that mean if i even have a slight belly or whatever that i could be deemed overweight and fail ? lol

any help will be much appreciated.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 84 ✭✭Bubbles34

my understanding is that candidates with a bmi of 30 or above would have their body fat measured. If their body fat % is too high.....then that would result in a fail. If their body fat % was with-in permitted tolerances, then they would be allowed to prove their fitness by doing a fitness test. (Details of the fitness test are on the psni website)

Bubbles has got it spot on i think.

You get weighed and height is taken. If they suspect that you are overweight then they measure your BMI. Someone told me (a big rugby player) that they were given another form of body test because they were muscly and BMI dosnt work for them.

Hit the gym and eat healthily and you'll be grand!!!

BMI IS you height and weight lol.

they dont auto fail you but instead invite you to a physical assesment instead. my BMI was that of someone who according to the nhs is obese, but i play alot of sport that requires good muscle weight (muscle is heavier than fat) they asked me to go on a physical in one of the previous campaigns i was on but not last time, cause i was nursing an injury at the time of the medical and wasnt in training so i lost some muscle weight.

so basically to sum up.....when it says if they think you are over weight they use your BMI which is only a rough guide, if its over a certain number they will do more accurate testing on you!

i applied last year and when i went to my medical my bmi was about 38-39 and i was invited to physical assessment which i failed! after a lot of hard work this year i managed to get it down to 32, initally he said i was still too high and would be invited for the PCA again, but as the medical went on he seemed impressed by everything else, including my body fat which had went down from 24% to 11%, at the end he shook my hand and congratulated me and i got letter a week later saying i had passed!

so i dont think its that strict!!!

Dixie as much as at times it pains me to admit it, i have taken some abuse over it, i joined a thing called slimming world, its like weight watchers, my sis and cousin went to it and i thought well it couldnt hurt, managed to drop 4 stone in 5 months and it was suprisingly easy, i did try to get to the gym 3 or 4 times a week as well but sometimes that was more like once or twice or not at all!

Since december i havent really stuck to it very well, have been drinking a bit more and stuff but have still been able to drop half a stone this year but i have been hitting the gym more regularly!!

    would def recommend it tho!!!

no shame in that jonnym, i think it took a lot of courage to to go and join that club even though you knew you would get abuse over it. As long as your happy like and look what you achieved so who cares about who slags you :D.

this is off topic here but would anyone advise joining the PSNI at 18/19 years of age?
