After reading that guide I feel intimidated. lol But I'd rather have it difficult than easy, at least I'll know I'm worth something if and when I get through.

"Ignore real life information. For example if the text in passage states that "Titanic sank in a pond in in Ahoghill in 2008" then IT DID" - Imma have to remember that. Funny though. lol

Thanks a lot for all that help and info!

There should only be 40 questions in the verbal part of the test. And 30 in the numerical, as its marked out of 70.
    Edit: i hope.

    1. Is all we will be doing at the IST just the verbal and numerical tests? Or is there more on that day?
    2. I know you obviously can't have a calculator but can you do mathmatical working out on the paper? It's just that I read somewhere that you'd be disqualififed if they seen any marks on the paper that wasn't your answer :|

I never knew you could do that! I would've loved to know what I got got for each bit because I actually found the verbal bit rather hard for some reason and would say a fair chunk of my marks lost came from there.

Look for qualified text in statement to give you pointers

Absolute words - Must Have Will
Qualified words - Could Can Some

What does this person mean by 'absolute' and 'qualified' words? :s Cuz it sounds like it could be good advice if I understood what it meant lol:o

It means That absolute words such as MUST and DEFINITELY do exactly what they say on the tin and they cant be deviated from. Qualified words can be interpreted in different ways such as MAYBE and PROBABLY. What he's basically trying to say is be careful when reading sentences and look out for KEY words like the ones stated. But remember you have to be pretty quick as well, its finding the right balance which is difficult. Good Luck everyone :D

Hi guys, just joined the forum and its my first time applying for the PSNI... Been reading through all the advice and experiences of the IST test and its actually made me a little more nervous!! The time seems to be the biggest factor I suppose! or lack of it!! lol.:) I usually work well under pressure but I'm not exactly a number person - so I'm just worried that could ruin my chances! do you think it would be wiser to focus my attentions on the verbal and guess my way through the maths or vice versa?

My advice for those of you going to do the apptitude test for the first time is to stop stressing yourself out already. You are reading messages on here from people who have struggled with it and have decided that it is going to be hard for you too!!

As the old saying goes "cross that bridge when you come to it"

I did the test 4 times (i think, its been a while now) and every time i passed it no problem. The test is taxing simply because of the time constraint. All the questions are answerable, you just need to know when to move on to the next question.

My advice for when you go is to go through the test as quick as you can first time through and answer all the questions you can straught away. If you are stuck on a question dont spend anymore time on it. Move to the next one and so on. Once you have gone through and answered all the "easy" ones go back and start again on the ones you missed.

If you spend too much time on each question you are inevitably going to run out of time and not get all the way through the test. If you at least go through the test answering the ones you can first then at least you will have attempted every question.

The time does go in quick but if you are sensible you will get every question answered.

Another tip is simply guess!! DO NOT LEAVE ANY ANSWER BLANK!! I can't stress that enough. If you cant figure it out just guess. You have a 25% chance of getting the right answer.

I'll finish by going back to my original point - stop stressing about it! You are going to make it even harder for yourself on the day if you are spending the time between now and then worrying.

    Hope that helps :D

stressing yourself out is the worst thing to do. if your cut out for being a peeler then you should be able to control yourself and not give in to stress! if a 20 minute test gets your stressed, what are you going to do when you arrive at a 7 car pile up on the motorway with 13 casualties, 7 car wrecks, motorway traffic to divert, fire crews and ambulances to contend with!?:confused: that is what the test is designed to do, separate the sheep from the goats, put you under pressure and see how you perform

at my test last year, a guy came in and sat down, as the woman was reading out the instructions, he ran out and was sick, needless to say, he didnt come back in!!

Totally agree not to worry/stress etc but, as you probably know yourselves, it's so hard not to lol.. Hopefully we'll all get through it and land in Stage 2 together.. and so on, until we're starting on the same day eh! Positive thinking! :)

I thought that but everyone says that it's nothing like that and that it is much much harder :| Apparently the verbal part will last approx. 20 minutes with 48 questions and the numerical part will last approx. 25 mins with 30 questions..

There's some decent enough tests on the internet, some of them harder than the real thing so they'd have you ready!

Try http://www.kent.ac.uk/careers/psychotests.htm and click on verbal/numerical etc
Also http://www.thatquiz.org has some miniture basic maths tests
Also, do not underestimate the power of BBC GCSE Bitesize Revision http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/maths/ - honestly, it explains everything you need to know about fractions, percentages etc and how to work it all out

Hope that helps.. lol is it obvious that I've been freaking out about this test and thus looking up everything I can get my hands on? =P
