Definitely doing this if/when I go Ivy. Assuming Intel hasn't pulled their finger out by then of course.

if Intel find out you did it though, that's warranty bye bye.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,181 ✭✭✭Serephucus

If you use anything other than the stock cooler that's also warranty bye-bye. I don't really seem them ever finding out. I've never fried a processor, and I don't think I ever will, really, so I'm not too worried about ever having to send it back.

Its pretty easy to deny that you used a 3rd party cooler, as there's nothing they can say to prove otherwise. Explaining away the fact that you physically opened up the chip might be a bit more difficult. :pac:

Also I'd recommend that anyone planning to do this should be very very careful, if you **** it up you're screwed. Don't do it this way:

Good god... That has to be a dead chip or something. I refuse to believe anyone can be that stupid. I call troll.

Edit: And yeah, I know it's a lot easier to deny not using a stock cooler, just being my pedantic self and making the point. :)

Well if it wasn't dead before it definitely is now.

    Something the WCers might like:

    http://www.swiftech.com/Helix120mm-fan.aspx

Supposed to compete very well with Gentle Typhoons. Hopefully they release other speeds. No reviews that I could find yet, though I think someone at OC.net might be working on one.

I noticed the i5-3570K tray version is €10 cheaper than the boxed version on HWVS. Is the omission of a stock fan the only difference between the them, or does the tray version also have a shorter warranty?

Unliked boxed CPUs which usually have a three year warranty directly with the manufacturer, AMD or Intel will not accept an OEM tray CPU, your warranty is be with the retailer only and usually for a much shorter length of time.

    thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 56,015 ✭✭✭✭Headshot

    what motherboard do you have?

If your motherboard is 64bit capable, you'll need windows 7 -64 bit version

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,540 ✭✭✭freeze4real

my motherboard is Asrock ALIVEnf6G-VTSA, i'm not sure if it supports 64bit.

    Does your windows contain 64bit?

There should be 2 disks in the windows 7 box, 1 is 32bit and the other is 64 bit

What does it say on the windows 7 disk

Actually the windows 7 software was extracted to the a USB file. So I'm not sure if it contains a 32/64bit.

Do you have 32-bit already installed?

You can't convert an installation, you'd have to install again.

If you only have a 32-bit disc, you can download a 64-bit one and still use the same license key. Make sure you stick to the same version (i.e., windows 7 Pro or Windows 7 home premium...).

    Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit

You can burn it to a DVD or create a bootable USB drive.

Afraid so, you have to a clean install to go from 32bit to 64bit.

There's no way to keep them?
Like, moving from XP to 7 saved all my programs and stuff.

There isn't, no. What you did was an upgrade, switching 32-64 / 64-32 requires a clean install. It's very different in terms of how it handles and addresses information, etc.

    I'm going from 32 - 64.

So, I know this question has been asked a million times over, but I can't find the pages. :(

Best Mechanical Keyboard for around 100euro? Can go a little more if needed.

I was looking through the guide on overclockers, and whilst its very helpful. I would imagine things have progressed a lot since 2009 so thats probably outdated.

I quite like the shiny DAS models with no letters, but the ones on Amazon are very expensive and I can't find the exact model I like.

I think brown or black keys would be best, as I do a lot of gaming.

I did a fair bit of reading about this before and most people seemed to be recommending the Ducky Keyboards. I made a post about it in some other thread before so I'll just quote that:

    Hey all,

I did a good bit of reading about this not so long ago so just to add a few things to what has been said already.

First of all, apparently that overclock link is wrong/inaccurate about a few things (I'm not sure exatcly sure what) but it is based on a longer more accurate piece on geekhack that can be found here

The next thing that may be of interest is Ducky keyboards (in particular the 9008 keyboards )are generally considered one of the best mechanical keyboards you can buy. They come with all types of keys i.e. Blue, Brown, Black and Red. You can buy one from a Taiwanese website that is linked below and each keyboard will cost about 3790 Taiwanese dollars which is about €100 and shipping is another $20 to Europe. I have never used this website but I know others have without any problems. Still you might want to check that they will send to Ireland (although I can't see why not). Anyway here are the full list of keyboards and associated links.

    Blue Backlit:

    MX Browns

    MX Blue

    MX Red (Taiwanese only)

    MX Black (Taiwanese only)

Red Backlit (All red backlit options only have Taiwanese letterings on the keycaps, for now)

    MX Red

    MX Black

    MX Brown

    MX Blue

    Final Note:
Taiwanese keyboards are very similar to US/QWERTY keyboards but just have more alternative letterings. A picture and description of these difference can be found on Wikipedia

    Funny thing

Im upgrading a computer up for a friend. The motherboard is http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWebSite/Product/Product_Detail.aspx?CategoryID=1&DetailID=720&DetailName=Feature&MenuID=24&LanID=0

Not the best motherboard is it but im stuck with it. My problem is that it can do 64bit but how come I cant find 64 bit drivers for SIS 900 PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,540 ✭✭✭freeze4real

    His all another noobish question.

My motherboard has the slots below

    2 x PCI slots
    - 1 x PCI Express x16 slot
    - 1 x PCI Express x1 slot

My question is are they pci 1.0 or 2.0 ?

It doesn't say in the specs, but I think it's PCI-E 1 as it's based on the nForce 4 chipset. It doesn't make that much difference apart from a little less bandwidth which may slow down some cards a bit. It should stop you from using any PCI-E graphics card.

If you're reinstalling windows, I recommend that you use this program to back up your windows activation.
    http://directedge.us/content/abr-activation-backup-and-restore

You back it up before you install. Then install it without entering a key. Finally restore your activation. This saves you from ringing up Microsoft about activating Windows again.
