I see where you're coming from, and in terms of finals I'm sure the GUI can request a venue.

However, for qualifying, I know of several clubs who I know well that are very reluctant to put themselves forward for qualifyng events, right or wrong.

For example, there are a few clubs out there who don't have a senior cup panel so in their mind why should they choose to host a senior cup qualifying event over two days and have their members rioting in the carpark. :P

Ah I know what you're saying. And I wouldn't overly criticise clubs for being reluctant - especially these days when giving up the course for a weekend would make a dent in revenue.

What I've been trying to get out of you is if there's something you know that I don't? ;) ie: can clubs just say no to the GUI when they request their course as a venue?

I would have thought, within reason, clubs accept when the GUI come knocking, given that the spread means that they won't be asking every year or anything like that. Obviously clubs will be reluctant, and there will be some silly ones like recently, Barton Shield went to Slade Valley where I'm fairly sure they don't have many very low guys at all. But in the heel of the hunt, my assumption was that the GUI held sway enough to get the courses they sought and not be rebuffed from one to the next until they finally got some club to agree. Surely they have more power than that?

I have a feeling you have more inside knowledge of this than I do, hence my intrigue.

Either way, the end product of a wide spread of courses from one year to the next is great IMO.

I missed it last year but wouldn't mind a whack round it this time. Can you let us know when timesheet opens nearer the time please madds!

Seeing as I'll most likely be involved in organising the day I'll have the inside track on when the timesheet will open. For a fee I'll even get you a prime time Graeme! ;)

Cheers lads. Local lads have won it the last two years. I think it would be no bad thing if an 'outsider' brings in the winning score this time round.

Anyone here playing the JSC at Blainroe on the 26th April? The timesheet is full and I was too late to book a spot so if anyone knows someone who is planning to pull out could they let me know so I can get their spot.

Is there generally withdrawals on the day for these events, is it worth ringing the morning of the event to find out if there is room on the timesheet?

    Cheers,

    Aussie

    I'll most likely be there.
Will be doing a few myself this summer..

Lost my playing partners due to the economic climate (ie they lost their jobs and moved to the sun)

We were talking about Junior Scratch Cups there. Thought you were lower? Or were you refering to Senior SCs?

Just booked my slot for Bray on May 2nd. Haven't played it in a few years. Remember it being tough.

But am getting the head down now with the Carton membership and the facilities that go with it so hopefully be able to make a move back down again...

Still no word of Skerries JSC? If i remember rightly it was one of the first last year and a bloody good one it was too. I notice from the website they've been doing a bit of work on the course so hopefully it's just been put back rather than cancelled altogether.

    Anyone heard anything?

Nope. I played in it last year. Great day - good field too.

I dropped them an email earlier... the response was

"unfortunately we're not holding a junior scratch this year"

Shame. Another 36 hole JSC bites the dust.

The Lucan JSC was nearly turned into shared 18 hole Junior & Intermediate SC's. Cue uproar amongst our ranks and it was very quickly reverted back to the original 36 hole JSC format.

Entries for the Hermitage Scratch Cup (handicap limit 12) close on 26th April. The competition is on 3rd May and entry forms are on the ILGU website.

Of course it's only open to ladies so it's probably not of any interest to 99.9% of the boards golf forum. :p

There is a Junior Scratch in Courtown on Sunday 10th May, handicaps from 4-9
Intermediate is on the same day I think.... 3 balls.
I might try play in it as I think we have Barton Shield (qualifying) there later in the summer.
Anyone care to offer an opinion on the course?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,887 ✭✭✭madds

Courtown's a good course Licksy, you'll enjoy it. Although only ~300 yards from the sea at one point it's parkland course with a lot of trees. Starts off gentle enough with an easy Par 4 opener. Some very scenic holes and the greens are normally in great condition during the Summer but not sure where they'll be come early May.

Watch out for #9, which is a remodeled long Par 5 with a double dogleg of sorts that will require 3 good shots to get to the raised green.

Other holes of note are #4, #11, #14, and #17.

Not sure if I like what they have done to this hole. If they were to fill in the first ditch and open the water up around the green it would make for a real risk/reward hole. As it is it is a 3 iron off the tee, another 3iron up and a wedge/9 iron into the green.

Just my opinion. Great course though.

Yeah lovely spot. Greens on their day can be awesome. I think they made a good and timely call to do a few revamps on the course, just as it started to become a little dated in terms of length and defence of greens.

Dunno if I'll drive down. Have the Medal the day before and will prob hit town on Saturday night.

Yeah, I agree. When I played it last Aug I saw they have filled in that slope on the LHS leading up to the first ditch which was sensible.
