You really need to try the broadband in your area until you know for sure, such is the nature of mobile broadband,
I think the 30 day happiness is gone and it's now only 7 days.. The limit is 7.5gb for the month..and it costs €25pm......3 offer a 14 day money back guarantee with a 10gb limit for 19.99pm....Vodafone is 30pm so it's not really at the races...

have you tried doing a network search to see is there any 3g network around, looks like you on edge so those speeds are about right...

using three mobile midband thats why it took so long! and o2 have a 10GB cap costing €20 a month if you sign up for 18 months and you are more likely to stay with o2 for that long than with three for 12 months!

that is on 3g network with the mast approx 2kilometres away but it is in the evening so contention is a major factor!

it is still way better and a lot more useable than when i had three fraudband where if i had these speeds i would not be able to access any sites at all. and the three mast is only 350metres away. it shows full signal but speeds are so bad it just does not work.

with o2 i have very low signal but daytime speeds are always 3-5times what i used to get with three!

That's pretty crap, have you tried 3 latley, it has improved in areas, the cap is now gone up to 15Gb pm for new customers and exisiting ones.....

    Just got o2 mobile today,

did a speed test at home (galway) and was getting

    ~3000 download
    ~1000 upload
and a ping of 123 ms to Dublin

When I pinged San diego it was 508 ms....Is that ping speed good enough for gaming>????

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8 wayno78

Hi, I recently got the o2 broadband. Living in Dublin 15 and would have thought speeds would be better.

At 7pm (so prob a busy time)....Upload is 21kbps and download is 99kbps. Ping is 522ms. Distance is 100mi.

Not entirely sure if thats good. Can someone give me some guidance before the trial period is up?

I dont seem to be able to watch any you tubeclips without long pauses

    Any help please??
    Thanks a lot

Wayno, what colour light have you on the modem...?

    There are 3 light colours..

Green - GPRS (You don't want that)
Blue - 3G (can be crap at times)
Kryptonite - 3.5G (if you can latch onto this colour you should get better speeds..

Do a network search on the modem, I think set it to WCDMA only and see can you get the greeney blue light (kryptonite) and that should help a lot...you've a choice of 3 connections...one of them should give you better speeds....sorry don't have an 02 modem infornt of me now to guide you through it exactly, what modem have you and what kind of 02 icon have you on the desktop (mobile partner?)

I use O2 Mobile Internet for its mobility as sometimes I need the net away from home and office. I was in Limerick today and was using it, and it was averaging around 2 or 2.5megs down and around 530kbps up. I was using it in the car but was being driven so was able to really monitor the speeds and some cells are definitely better than others. I would say the average is between 1.5 to 2.2 megs but there arepockets where bandwidth is plentyful.

At one stage I got 4megs in bursts but the pings were atrocious at around 230 to Dublin on speedtest.net. I don't use it much and have high speed at home. I only receive EDGE where I live but even at that it was handy when I arrived home awaiting an email (laptop had long gone dead) and found my 15megs Eircom service doinked due to DNS errors which were happening all day apparently.

I was downloading on Flashget and downloaded 1GB in 1 hour and 33mins. My O2 modem downloaded this and for around 10 or 12 mins of this time would be in low signal areas when the car was passing through.

If you have good signal and low contention it is good for downloading and surfing etc. but the technology will never be able to compete with DSL, Cable or Fibre for ping times which are so vital for gaming, voip and a multitude of specialist applications. I would say it is the best Mobile Internet service in Ireland and seems well ahead of both Vodafone and Three. With Three's product more resembling mobile dial-up.

OT: These products should not have the name Broadband, but should be called Mobile Internet. As an example I was in the US last year in Las Vegas and went to the Business Centre in the Hotel and asked to use a PC with Broadband, the guy said it will be $25 for the hour, I said wow, a little pricey, yer man replies, Sir if you want Broadband it will cost you and the connection is 1gigabit, this to their terminology is Broadband and the normal internet is around 10megs for less. I paid the $25 and explained what I meant by Broadband and how people here suffer on Dialup, he laughed at the notion and murmered something about African villages and mudhuts. Just shows how far we lag behind, O2 are still better than 3 anyday!!

That all depends on where you are, the last few weeks o2 are gone pretty bad in my area while 3 is flying along....last month it was the other way round....there are so many variables at play it's impossible to say which one is better....it can change by the day.....the best advice to give anyone is try the best deal first and then the next and so on and so forth....

...... The power light is blue but the other light, I think its the connection light, is orange.
This is a 3G Watcher/Sierra Wireless modem and "edge" is referenced on the screen when I connect. "Edge" is either in a clear or coloured box. Usually its a coloured box.

Sorry, not too up on the tech side of things so hope the above makes sense.

I had a brief look last night and tried to do a network search but had no success. I clicked on "options" and then into networks... It seems to be set at automatic.
I didnt see any reference to WCDMA.
I'll have another proper look tonight but any guidance would be much appreciated.

    Thanks a lot

I haven't played with the Sierra modem software yet but i'll give it a go during the day and get back to you....Edge is the worst connection you can have speed wise it's up to a maximum of 256k which is useless for you tube etc...

you seem to support three over other operators in many of your posts, unfairly imo

yes i have mostly to show people how bad their three service actually is, but i have not done this on a regular basis and have no connection to o2 whatsoever except for having their modem.

both yourself and drunkenmonkey appear to have connections to three either through working for them or selling their products so coming on this thread and telling people that the o2 service "can be crap at times" and "you dont want that" and "if you can latch onto this colour you mightget better speeds" is not really doing anyone here any service at all and makes ye appear like employees of three.

I like DM do not work for 3. I infact do not work in the mobile industry at all. I have never suggested three is good or bad. I give out what ever information I can and let others make up their mind. As usual you are incorrectly posting and I think you are getting my posts mixed up with DM. Please in future make sure you realise its me your posting about. Can you give me examples of where I have said three is better than o2 on this thread. Please feel free to also apologise to me, admit you are wrong and realise I have never suggested any broadband is better from one certain operator.

Well I am about to move off Eircom (no phone line in new house) and am trying out O2 at the moment. Verdict? Absolute Sh*te. Been speed testing for last 4 days and nothing above 612kbps (7.15am Saturday morning) and averaging 400kbps. Waste of time logging on this afternoon. Up to 3.6Mbps my *rse.

What has surprised me is that my Eircom connection (up to 3Mbps) has never fallen below 2.6Mbps no matter what time I tested.

Thinking of getting an O2 mobile broadband to replace a BT landline based broadband connection - just checked my speed and I am getting some 800 kpbs, which is about as good as it gets..! :(

Any one want to share their experience with O2 mob broadband here in Drogheda?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,461 ✭✭✭✭watty

No Mobile is a replacement for fixed Broadband:
    • The Mobile "up to" speed is not a Package speed, it's shared to ALL the users on the sector.
    • The Mobile "up to" speed is the peak for one user. With poorer signal and one user it can 1/16th. Divide THIS speed by number of users x2
    • You may not connect at all. There is a small user limit per sector on Mobile
    • If you are more than half the cell radius away from mast, you may disconnect when more people connect
    • Latency (ping) is at best three times worse than Fixed Broadband. It's 120ms to 2000ms, compared to 15ms to 90ms for fixed broadband.
    • A short disconnect will lose your session.
    Other issues too

Is that the speed of the landline? If so, then are you on a 1Mbps package and can you upgrade to a higher one? You may not even get that speed with O2, and even if you do, it may not be there always.

Unless you're at a point where you can no longer afford the landline, or it's stopped working with no sign of being repaired, then you shouldn't be considering a mobile option.

I have recently got o2 mobile internet in the Galway city region.

I have to say I was pretty impressed with it as I wasn't expecting much....
For regular internet use and occasional downloading it is very good.

I downloaded a couple of movies in 2 hours the other night.

When I tested the speed using speedtest.net I generally get about 2.5 down and 1 up.

Ping to dublin (150 miles) was 130ms.

was chatting via xbox to west coast USA and there was some delay alright but nothing major.

What I have found is that the speeds you get are totally dependent on what site you use. I get completly different results when pinging West coast USA with speedtest.net than with DSLreports.com.

Overall I would say that if you are thinking about mobile broadband then obviously you dont have much choices and in that case its not a bad option
