Okay....pause for a moment.....take a step back.....and try and figure out is this is this April Fools Day Prank Part 2......

as you see, he crossed it out, because he read my post wrongly, fair enough, we all do it... the fact he said he was wrong puts him quite high in the honest scale of boards imo.

This is a lot more enjoyable from the sidelines. Same Grief different griefers.

No no ... this is an epic sh1tstorm! :D

My net was down for the past few days - so reading all of this at a stage removed is very strange indeed.
Epic humour bypass evident - If I'd found a picture of a bunch of troll heads swirling around in a tea-cup I'd have posted that instead!

Seriously like people need to get a grip....

If lemming and Firekitten were not told until after the fact, then it seems I was consulted beforehand, clearly looking for something a bit spicy and get things going ;)

I suggested that I be made mod for a few hours and get let loose to go to town, then Steve came to this , imo, awesome idea.

Yeah it was spicy, it worked of a few presumptions. It no doubt looked to spark some " omfg what the hell!" remarks

In all honesty the only bit of negativity and controversy came from this as people go the torches out looking to set **** alight,

And in fairness its their own fault for being absolute dopes, and theyve all being caught out now for being wallies.

Everyone should have realised it was an April fools, and had some banter about it with some jokes and left it at that, or if you didn't realise the day in it, well, get a calendar

Just to clear this up once and for all.

Myself and Doc had a chat about an April fools gag for the forum I contacted him looking for some ideas as to what would go down well. During that chat an idea was born - by me, nothing to do with Doc so no blame can be sent there. I contacted the people that would be involved via pm and had a positive response just after midnight. I posted the thread at 00:42 on April first.

I really am disappointed by the reaction by some people to that thread - to the point that I was annoyed enough to have to switch off the internet yesterday and regain come calm.

When I came in here first, I asked for feedback on what people felt was wrong with the forum and the overwhelming response was that the place needed to be moderated less and more fun allowed.

Well, you've got that of late and imo it's been working well - the majority seems to be happy with it and as for the few that are taking offence at it - all I can say is we can't please everybody.

The prime directive for mods on boards is to enforce the 'Don't be a dick' rule - that leaves a lot of leeway for both users and mods to all get along and have a bit of craic. Let's do that folks.

I fully agree as of late the forum has been alot less harshly moderated and alot of things are being left to evolve down to the point where it ends, still dont like threads being locked, prefer if they were just let die off, actually thats the only thing that bugs me, still feel this forum has excessive locking of threads.

But if I had to pick between the way things were and the way they are now, present is a pure winner by miles.

Anything is better then the banter killings that went on few months back

Fair play Steve - it's been decent around here lately. That said, I think letting Doc run riot as a mod for April 1st would have been equally funny. You're spot on too about this whole hoopla being a bit, err, odd - given that there was that uber thread where everyone (myself included) was ranting on about "it's just no fun anymore" and "won't someone please think of the children". In my haste to think that everyone thought the same way as me, I thought that the "someone think of the children" posts were being ironic or taking the pish.
    It seems not...

Doc, if things like youtube, bookface, etc are blocked try adding an "s" after the "http" so it would be "https://"

Most of the times typing in the ip address works.

Just ping the server through the command promt. If you don't have a command window, make one! If you don't know how... just put command.com into run....if you don't have access to that make a text file, write command.com into it then save it as a.bat, well, anything once it's a bat file.

thanks boys but didnt work :(

Most of the times typing in the ip address works.

This has the limitation of only working with very big sites. The majority of sites share their IP with other sites(located on the same physical line) and thus this is useless.

EDIT: Airsoft adverts TOTD two days running :P

I've several different interests and hobbies all that fringe around
nerdy/geeky type things. Like painting and building metal and plastic models, have an interest in mold making,
making mini castles etc and theres airsoft, and I had wanted to dabble with 3d modeling but never got the time, and theres work that is cad work thats veering towards PCB board layout

Was thinking about 3D printers. Would a very very crude one have uses
when it comes to Airsoft ? I know you wont get detailed pieces and the finish would need some work but was thinking it would be cool to make spare tappet plates, possible a piston with the right material, a nozzle may be too fine detailed or too small a piece to make, but less complicated things like missing your butt plate or crack your stock? want to make a custom handguard, may be possible since ABS is one of the materials that
    can be used.

RepRap project reckon you can build one yerself for about 500 Euros
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RepRap_Project

Or a premade home entry level 3D printer is about 1000 Euros
    http://www.bitsfrombytes.com/catalog/rapman

Materials at about 50bucks a reel.

I would think there's a possible market in making bespoke parts that aren't available yet... An F88 upper for the AUG, for instance. There's lots of pent-up demand for airsoft guns that people can't get, just mention the word Vintorez and see what happens.

These printers can make some really complicated, detailed and accurate parts.

Good beginner article in The Register recently, also contains links.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,984 ✭✭✭NakedDex

Unless you want a plastic Vintorez, that's not really going to be of help.
I've had the good fortune to use 3D printers a few times, including an absolute monster SLS machine that was hideously expensive and sickeningly good.

The problem is, desktop systems like the RepRap and MakerBot work on a thermoplastic extrusion system. Great for rapid prototyping and model making, but structurally wouldn't be up to much stress. Depending on the resolution of them, they could probably bang out tappets and air nozzles, but I'd doubt a piston made on an FDM machine would last long at all.

Advanced SLS machines can produce metal parts that could, and EBM machines can even run out titanium ones (I've only ever seen one before, oh to have played with it...) but you're talking about tens of thousands for an SLS machine that could.

Bespoke parts are a long way off, but an FDM machine like the RepRap could potentially make exterior accessories without much trouble. With accurate measurements and some AutoCAD skill, you could be knocking out grips and stocks with relative ease.

I've been hankering for a MakerBot and a laser cutter for a while now, but I've got much more important things to be dropping three grand on.

I mentioned the Vintorez only as an example of there being a market for parts other than Yet Another Receiver for an M4. :)

There's also software available that lets 3D printers produce moulds for casting the part in metal. Wouldn't that be cheaper for limited runs?
