''While Ive never been to protests in Rossport(there a bit too rough for me) I have been to many protests in Dublin ,shannon and Limerick in the last few years. The amount of gardai presence at these protests always astounds me. Only two weks ago I went to a peacful protest with 6 other people outside the Nigerian embassy just of leeson street. All we wanted to do was raise a bit of awarness and hand a letter into the embassy. While we were there three gardai were stationed beside us with two patrol cars going by every five minutes. This was on the same day that two murders had been comitted in the city. When push comes to shove the goverment and the gardai are more intrested in protecting their financial intrests wether be that Shell or corrupt African states then maintaining the 'peace ' of the land.

Also the proteters are not trespassing. The protests are held on a main public road,as far as Im aware.''

Now come on,a protest can turn sour at any monent.Just look a when the Shel to Sea people mounted a protest outside shell HQ in Dublin. There was only a few there but they still climbed up onto the entrance roof!
Gardai have no financial interests w/ Shell, that is just Shell-to-sea methodology! They are there to prevent you breaking the law and/or damaging property that is not yours. That is their job..

The protestors have climbed over the fence at the site in Bellanaboy and gotten onsite, which in itself is a dumb thing to do for health and safety reasons. Doubt any of them have safepass training, its a building site, were they wearing high viz jackets or hard hats? Not one of them and then they say Shell aren't doing things safely. At one point they even had children among them.

At one of the demos in the Dublin office they damaged a car of a lady in her 50's who was trying to get into the car park, which by the way is used by other companies other than Shell. They also damaged cars parked in the street, which they denied but I know for a fact is true.

Has anyone noticed on the indymedia site that if a negative comment is published it usually disappears after a while? I've never published up there but have read some of the stories, and as long as you agree with everything they say your comments will remain there.

Indymedia is gas. Most posts not 100% supportive of S2S get deleted within minutes for a variety of comical reasons (I've seen one deleted for not being "passionate" enough!). At the same time, they leave on plenty of libellous anti-Shell/Garda comments. There's one posted today alleging - as fact - that the security company at the terminal have been "intimidating" Maura Harrington - one of the leading lights of S2S. And acres of "solidarity socialist comrades" nonsense of course...

Why don't we jsut get those guys to devote all their energy to something productive? Like developing other renewable energy technologies?
That would be doing somethng positive...
...when they (or their fellow travellers) were in the trees at Glen of the Downs they weren't interested in building an alternative road or even a railway.

I hate all these Rossport ****.ers. Protest over the staight of the hospitals, or that are corrupt, lying, theiving taoishaoch has just given hmself a rise that is more then te standard industrial wage, or that he has one member of his goverment who was trown out of his party after accepting bribes and another who worked for a certain bank and openly helped people avoid paying tax. Or how about how certain goverment ministers seem to have editorial control over RTE.

It could have been far worse for Gary if he had left his head under the wheel, as he originally tried to do.<br />

the protestors showed the gardai the maps they had showing that they were drilling in sac without permission the gardai ignored them told the rps contractors to continue drilling and tried to force the protestors away. the gardai only payed attention to the illegality of the drilling when a protestor sat on the machinary for a few hours...

the pipeline will be in an SAC

the police have no interest in law they are enforcers for the state who are puppets of corporations.

A bit over the top? Your argument looses all merit with ridiculous comments like this.

The next time you are assualted (I wonder why....) or your house gets burgled you won't be slow to call the gardai. And moan about the response time either.

As stated already if the protestors weren't blocking public roads and stopping people from getting to work, we could free up a number of gardai.

Ideally the army would useful for protecting the site. They have manpower and the training but they can't be used as the protestors will scream "oppression" as they busily block people from their jobs and cause damage to property. Double standards??

are the gardai supposed to be experts in map reading? i'm not so if anyone showed me a map I probably wouldn't be able to pinpoint my exact location

the gardai are only involved in criminal law,not environmental law as you are claiming above.

the gardai are interested in the law and that's why people have been arrested for public order offences in bellanaboy. They are also enforcers of criminal law which have created by elected officials

I gave an example to back up my assertion

the gardai disregarded the local people protesting who were trying to give them information but the ignorant gardai didn't want to know they were rude and just defaulted to talking the company line
