i seen some nice reg plates in the uk and was wondering what the position is on buying plates in the uk and using them in Ireland.

If you are resident here then UK plates on your car would be illegal!

So, if i was buying lets say for instance, a BMW 730 for jan 2009 delivery, how much does it cost to have the number pre-booked (like 09D730) with my county council?

    anyone any experience?

It costs €315 to reserve a number
    See http://www.citizensinformation.ie/categories/travel-and-recreation/vehicle-standards/vehicle_registration_numbers
Many of these are reserved in advance by dealers.

Bear in mind that it may affect the resale value. I would be very reluctant to buy any car with a 'matching' registration as I think it's tacky in the extreme! Yuck!

Probably wouldnt bother the owner, if he can afford the plate and the brand new Merc he can well afford the e1,265 fine.

    I agree..........I would'nt pay over €300 for a reg.........could be arsed TBH. I'd rather spend it on something useful.:D

An awful mustard coloured M3 (I presume it was Genuine) that I followed from Limerick to Charliville a week or two ago.

    03-LM-3

Or, as it was written on the plate...

    03-L-M3

I have a picture on my phone that I'll post later.

IIRC that has been spotted a lot around the lucan/clondalkin area. Its more yellow than mustard IIRC.

Are they living here? A plate like that makes them stand out a bit so customs would be interested in them.

there was a clapped out Hilman Hunter in pagent blue that resided on the strawberry beds, dublin about 25-30 yrs ago with the reg VIP 2. IP was a carlow reg. Many enquires were made to purchase car but nothing happened.

Any one of you remember that car or remeber seeing it? (if your old enough)

Knew another chap in the grain business with a 280E merc reg no. IO 1020 as in 10-10-20 the fertilizer. IO was a kildare reg?...

That sort of reminds me of this Chevrolet Biscayne that I saw at a car show a few years back:

    1957_Chevrolet_Biscayne_State_Car.JPG

    On Cartell:

    Registration IRL1
    Make CHEVROLET
    Model UNKNOWN
    Description Not Available
    Engine Capacity(cc) 3860
    Fuel Type PETROL

surely IRL 1 was not a genuine Irish reg whereas VIP 2 was??

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,031 ✭✭✭Silvera

IRL 1 was a special-issue UK diplomatic plate issued in 1959 for the Irish embassy/ambassador in the UK. The car was later imported into Ireland by an enthusiast and still (legally) retains this number.
(Up to sometime in the 1960's/70's it was possible to import a Uk car and retain it's UK reg number).

VIP 2 is an original Kilkenny issued registration.
(Interestingly, VIP 1 found it's way onto the UK register many years ago and was bought by Roman Abramovich for c.£500,000 last year!)

That car gets around. I see it occasionally in Dublin Airport and have mentioned it here before. ;)

(I would also describe it as yellow rather than mustard).
