The only downside of Ironside is that it doesn't have a resident balding cripple ...

    Otherwise its a great facility

I've been training there for about 2.5 years. It's still (by far) the best gym in the area but standards are slipping, rapidly.

Hi am looking to join a local gym and was interested in your review...

1)Why do you say that the standards are slipping? If you've been there for 2.5 years thats a long time....what is changing?

    2) Also can you tell me (Please!!!!) how much you are paying for RAW gym membership at this stage..i called into this place the other day and was quoted 200euro for 3 months or 400euro (I think) for a year...That seems expensive to my mind particularly given some of the facilties...see below

    3) I had a look around- Gym seemed nice :) and of course thats what membership is based on...classes seemed busy ;) and there was genuinely as good vibe :p.... but the changing rooms were rank:o...the sauna was like a kip:(, the toilets stank  and the showers looked like they were out of a prison...

    4) Brass tacks..how much are others paying for this gym....am on a budget...

    4) So honestly board readers on this thread...does this constitute good value for money...?? Am interested in Your opinion please....

Thank you..:D and apologeis for overuse of the emoticons...

The fact it seems expensive... It's quite good value, especially if it was 400 for the year.

Just because Ben Dunne charges a tenner for a gym membership doesn't mean anything more than that is over priced...

    Hi-
I said I was on a budget so that that (400) was expensive for me- Link2007 felt that it was the best gym in the area but that standards were slipping and I wondered why he felt that (especially after 3 years)- I did feel the gym was good but the other facilities could have been better as described and irregardless of what price you pay i think you should expect clean changing facilites hence i question the price..

My question is, what are others paying for this gym? You're obviously a member-how much do you pay?

Take one guess as to what everyone is paying? Yep, the exact same price you were quoted. Do you think there's some conspiracy whereby you were quoted an entirely different price than everyone else? (There's varying student rates of course.)

I think it's great value. The location suits me and the equipment is what I'm looking for. Not sure what link-2007 meant about slipping standards, I've been there since it opened and the equipment has been improving fairly constantly since it first opened. The gym crowd is decent enough and the staff are all sound.

Grubby changing rooms are fairly low on my totem pole of concerns given the other advantages the place has.

Its actually 499 for the year
    299 for 6 months
    199 for 3 months

    Unless

    (A) you are a student or work somewhere that gets you a corporate membership...

    Or

    (B) you got the 'COH is totally sound discount'

*COH may not actually be sound. Soundness is entirely based on lifting number.

COH is NOT an equal opportunities employer.

The dublin corporation gym in ballymun is very good value for money plus has great weights and cardio section , swimming pool and sauna and is never so packed you have to fight for equipment( well it was when i was there last have not been in a year and half cause im in oz)

Hercules in the city is also very good and cheap if your into weights also has some decent cardio stuff but would be a gym for mainly weight lifting

    David Llyod's is outrageously expensive...

Raw Condition in town is a short bike ride/bus/drive away and a better option imo. Ironside's probably a bit of a trek for you if ya don't drive.

I train in both Raw and Ironside, I'd recommend both equally.

Both top notch, have all the equipment you'll ever need.

Depends on what you're into really, training or socialising?

    Socialising-go to riverview.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,025 ✭✭✭d'Oracle

I'd just like to point out that the majority of members I have observed in Ironside manage to be sociable and train with no difficulty or conflict.

  • Registered Users Posts: 221 ✭✭daveyc21

It about 3 km to Raw and about 4 km to Ironside (AA route planner). I am biased but I would say check out both and see which suits. We will throw you a free session in Ironside if your interested just pm me.

I was alluding to the fact that riverview is a leisure/social club.

All members I've come across in Ironside are nice, friendly people. No need to point out that fact, most members in places like raw or Ironside are friendly and willing to help each other.

I will visit the other gyms on my return and decide then thanks again guys

    Hi Guys,

Anyone know anything about this gym in Walkinstown? Never heard of it but website seems alrite.

I've been with a Personal Trainer for about 9 months but getting tired of that now as routine has got too predictable so think its time to change it up.

I've been doing 3 times a week with the trainer (pure weights with odd conditioning session).

Considering either giving Leonard Hanna a shot to see how it goes or maybe fly solo and go with a different gym.

Looking for decent free weights and would couple that with 2 spinning or cardio classes per week. Looking for Rathfarnham / Tallaght area but not Ben Dunnes - too packed for me!

    Any thoughts??

I will be at UCD, Smurfit Business School in September which is situated in Blackrock.

Bearing in mind that I am a student and will not have a car which is the best value for money gym to train at?

How long is the walk/cycle from Blackrock to the Bellfield campus?

All I need are free weights and some machines, nothing else.

Ironside is around the corner from Clarks Newsagent on Brookfield Terrace off Caryfort avenue (a stones throw from Smurfit). Its 35 euro a month for students if you want to pop in for a free guest session feel free.

Im open to suggestions for better gyms if anyone has an opinion,

Just to give you a background story.

I have bad asthma since i was a child. Never did P.E. in school and over the years i have joined aerobics, tae kwon do, and countless other classes that incorporate fun and working out!!!!

i could never ever complete a full class of anything as my asthma always got the better of me and would have to sit out the last half hour of the class.

I joined a gym in finglas and lasted a few weeks. You were literally left to do what u wanted and felt i wasn't gaining anything from it so i left.

As i wasnt getting any benefits from the gym, i went walking every evening for an hour and would also walk home from work which was about 5k.

about 6 weeks ago a friend of mine got me a free week in Educogym and thought i'd give it a try. After the week i joined on for 4 weeks and i have now signed up for another 4.

i really enjoy it and the type of workout really suits me and i have noticed a huge improvement in my asthma.

i have lost 8lbs, toned up and havent had supplements pushed on me. I havent lost the weight i wanted but i am happy to be dropping lbs slowly so i just want to put my 2 cents in as reading through some of the posts on Boards.ie, you could easily be put off Educogym.

Financially, i couldnt afford to sign up for a 3 period with them but i will definitely be putting my money away to try and keep going as much as i can

Hey COH, I hear you are totally sound (cough, discount, cough)...

I'm a student in UCD and am looking for a gym to join, was considering RAW since two of my mates are in there and I've heard good things.

Any idea what the student rate is?

I'm looking to join a gym in either ashbourne or Ratoath (live ratoath). Verve in Ratoath I think is too small, so was looking at energie or clan in ashbourne.

Does anyone have recommendations on either? I'm looking for probably just a 6 month contract (which they both have), and will probably only get their at either 7.30/8pm at night, or 3.30pm on way home from work.

I was in the NAC, which I thought was great, but only went on way home from work as didn't want a 20 min drive to gym after I got home - and a lot of days had stuff to do after work, so didn't go.

Any feedback on gyms in the area would be really appreciated.
    thanks

I recently joined Ben Dunne gym in Lucan. I was just wondering what is it like? I'm a complete beginner so I was just wondering what equipment would be best to use? What time of day are they least busiest? Just general information.
