But you can pay monthly by direct debit? If you sign a year's contract, I guess?

Do you know what that monthly payment is by any chance?

I'll drop into them sometime this week I guess, but it might be nice to know ahead of time.

    Cheers for your help.

Yeah you can, if you set up a DD you just get a rolling charge from month to month for the year.

Memebership's circa 600-650 I think, so I'd say in the region of 55-60 for it monthly, it works out slightly more expensive when you pay by DD tho.

you can only pay by the month by d/d for total fitness.i think it €55 per month d/d with €120 upfront. if ye pay upfront i think its €598

Does anyone find the new exit of Total Fitness onto Navan Road a bit annoying to get onto??? In the evenings its always jammers

Good gym though, like the hammer strenght machines, westpoint doesn't have them, the equipment is a bit older than westpoint but I perfer Total fitness

There was a thread about it a while back. THe conclusion was; stop being a scaredy cat and just pull across the lanes one at a time when you have a chance!!

The HS machines are awesome. Best ones out there. The other equipment in TF works perfectly.... I wish they'd tighten up the dumbbells and bar's, but other than that I have no gripes. I think I'm actually going to get an allen key so I can do it myself because it wrecks my head.

Yeah true! I’ll just have to put the foot down in future!!
People say it’s a bit messier than WestPoint which to be fair to them is true but I feel the equipment although older than WestPoint’s is far superior

Hanley I was meant to ask does Total Fitness get as busy as WestPoint?? Cause man WestPoint is crazy there at times....

im a member in crunch in UCD, really cheap to join and not too far from where i live, was €220 for the year.

dissadvantage all the students are back and some nights its mobed and it smells of sweat from time to time:mad:.
Other problems now are there is a load of broken machinery and with it being so busy you end up queing or getting stuck on one machine.
But for the price its sweet you also get personal training session and the trainers themselves are lovely. :)

    Thanks in advance.

There's NorthPoint in Santry which is cheap (around €300 pa) and good quality. There's also the DCC gyms/swimming pools in Finglas and Ballymun which are okay. They're pay as you go so you can turn up to try them out and then avail of membership if you decide you're going to go regularly.

    Ballyfermot Leisure Centre

Paid a visit in here today, it FINALLY opened about 3 weeks ago. Gym area is VERY small. Plenty of cardio equipment, of course
Weights area, painfully small - few machines, 3 benches and a good set of dumbells ranging from 2 to 30 kg I think it was...there's a couple of barbells dumped in the corner too that you have to squeeze past the free weights and smith machine to get to. All techno gym equipment so it's good quality stuff. They also have a multi-purpose cable jungle, leg press, leg curl, leg extension, lat pull down, shoulder press and chest press machines. Usual cardio stuff. No area dedicated for stretching/core work. They have a few mats in a pile on the floor beside the lat pull down but there's not REALLY enough space anywhere to actually use them.

I overheard an assesment which I wasn't overly impressed with but didn't observe enough of it to judge whether the instructors are any good or not.

Think the aerobics studio houses about 10 classes a week or summat...there wasn't much when I looked at the timetable anyway.

They also have the usual City Council gym facilities...sports hall for basketball, volleyball etc, multi purpose pitches etc etc

€7.00 for adult gym, €6.00 for adult pool single visit
€120 for 3 months adult gym and pool
€240 for 6 months adult gym and pool
€360 for 6 months adult gym and pool

Verdict: Was alright, there was only a few there so I could access what I wanted, will be going a few evenings on single visits to see how busy it is before I decide whether to hand over a years fees.

Edit: Plenty of vending machines full of chocolate, fizzy drinks and crisps too. You gotta love it.

I would say Total fitness however, Crunch fitness in Dun Laoghaire isn't bad either.

Have any of you though about a personal trainer? I offer personal training in-house or at your gym.. just thought I'd put it out there for any of you who may be interested ;)

You would say Total Fitness to what???

"What gym can I avoid so I don't have to see you there", perhaps?

I don't think anyone wants training from someone who can't use something as simple as a quote box tbh.

Crunch Fitness Dun Laoghaire, I'd rather check myself into Guantanamo Bay.

Guys was just wondering are any of you members? Can anyone give a review of this gym for me, thinking of joining and would like to know what its like, i'd be interested in an off-peak membership, so if anyone has prices that would be great.

Hi there, I have to say that I am a Total Fitness head but a friend of mine is a member of the Arena in Tallaght and he keeps telling me that its the dogs bo**** and not too expensive. I have text him asking him for the price so when he gets back to me I will get the prices up for you. :D

    anybody heard of Universal Gym?

Its only open 2 weeks and is located in Ballycoolin between Blanchardstown and the back roads of finglas.

ground floor: big machinery ( i dont know how to use) showers & toilets

upstairs: there's threadmills, cross trainers, bikes, a whole wall of weights & dumbells and more machines i don't know how to use lol

they have qualified trainers on site that can create tailored programmes

i went over to have a look, think it works out at around €300 for the year and the thing i liked its not a posey gym, its somewhere people actually go to get fit, not check themselves out in the mirror or socialise as ive seen elsewhere! :D

    I’ve heard good reports….

It’s owned by a couple of bodybuilders/powerlifters who used to (or may still do?) train in Hercs, so you can be sure it’s not a gym that’ll be afraid of a bit of use!

I haven’t been up there yet, but I’d like to check it out. I heard they’re getting, or have, a lot of top class powerlifting gear in there, including a monolift and squat and deadlift bars.

It’s gonna have a good atmosphere, good equipment and two very knowledgeable owners.

Definitely worth checking out for anyone on the northside!

    Savage!

I wonder can you pay in for a session? I'd love to have a go. If it's as good as it sounds Total Fitness can whistle for my membership renewal next June!

Sure Westpoint is miles better and cheaper than Total Fitness. Total Fitness was a dump as far as I can recall.

If by "better" you mean it has more colours... then I agree.

But if by better you mean better equipment, facilities and less crowds, I couldn't disagree more!

  • Registered Users Posts: 20,964 ✭✭✭✭Stark

Less crowds maybe, but the equipment was falling apart when I was in there last. Granted it was about a year and a half ago.

Went up to Universal this afternoon when I was passing Ballycoolin. Very impressive.

Smaller than I would have thought but has it all. Highlights for me are the deadlifting platform, Glute Ham Raise and the high quality of the bars. Really sharp with nice gnarling. Also the monolift is on its way. 2 weeks away.

Was chatting with one of the owners for about half an hour, nice fella, powerlifter / ex bodybuilder. Sean something, can't remember his last name now but was full of chat and was giving me a few tips as a noob at this.

Would be a nice little gym if you're seriously into lifting or bodybuilding. It's going up to €400 in January. Due to the size he couldn't handle an influx of new years resolutioners, I mean there's only 2 showers in the mens changing room!

The only issue I could see if it did get popular would be there is only 1 powercage and one pulling platform. However if there was a tight community in there I'm sure you could train together if you knew who was using it.

You're such a wind up merchant, i just want to have a crack at the power racks not many about, also i'm a personal trainer and a strength and conditioning coach, i looking for somewhere a bit more hardcore to operate out of.
