I agree with Plug, probably a better option is to buy a complete new engine from one of the recognised engine manufacturer - Nova Rossi, Picco or OS (Current Buggy World Champions). That way you end up with a better engine and better parts support.

    Regards,

    Oisin

I agree with Plug and Bonisio

Dont bother fixing that engine as it would probably let go on you again.
Get a decent engine and have fun ;)

I do not think the engines recommended above are suitable. But a replacement engine of some kind is probably the right choice.

    For this reason:
If Edwired broke piston, conrod, and crankshaft in a Protech ... then that is almost surely as a result of running the engine too hot, on inadequate lubrication, and continuing to do this even after it began to "hot seize" and tighten up, after which the big damage occurred. Basically it looks like it was run too lean for too long. A tuning mistake. This is reading between the lines but it's based on the sort of breakdown he has and what causes that breakage.

So why recommend that a learner (at tuning) get a high performance expensive engine? That increases the likelihood of more breakage, not reduces it. After all the majority of learners cannot even start a high performance engine in the first place, let alone tune it right.

It is better to first ask Edwired how much experience he has at tuning and running model car engines before making any (fix/replace) recommendations?

Hey Edwired: ALL THE GUYS HERE ARE IN LOVE WITH THE STUFF THEY USE. Due to personal pride in their gear we modellers have a strong tendency to slag off other stuff and praise the stuff we like and have invested our own cash in.

Protech engines work. They are not the best, but they are also far above the worst if you know what I mean. They won't win a national championship, but they are easier to tune and get running than the specialist engines that do that job. Mid range engines like Protech need less nitro to tune properly, and therefore they can run on 5% to 10% fuel that costs far far less.
Mid range engines also do more miles per gallon than performance engines.
The correct fuel for the competition engines recommended above (20 - 25% nitro) costs (at least) double the cost of the juice your Protech drinks!
So moving to the engines reccomended above could double your fuel costs as well as giving you a more "highly strung racehorse" to manage. Do you want that?

Before you buy anything first find out how and why you broke the last one. Was it the engines fault? Was it yours? And are you likely to do exactly the same to the next one .. in which case buy cheap secondhand, or will you never repeat this mistake having learned more now ... in which case buy better.

i say the engine is $269.99 = €220 and the tuned pipe is $75 = about €65 postal order or shipping of about $25 - $45 = €20 - €35 so my range of paying of €320 there about that cost.

Go to tower hobbies you'll get it for €150 or less.

    Motor - $299.97, i.e. $30 dearer

    Pipe - $69.99, i.e. $5 cheaper

Nett $25 dearer, less Towerhobbies coupons obviously (could prolly get $50 of ATM).

Much of a muchness really, these big online shops have all the basis covered.

Hi Edwired, I got my car from AMainHobbies, and I can recomend them from a customer service point of view, shipping is quiet fast.

The only thing to be aware of is that you will be charged VAT and Duty when the parts arrive in Ireland. AFIK they ship internationally via UPS so they will collect this when they deliver the bits.
I paid €54 VAT on an order worth $190, with $72 shipping ($262/€168 total)
And you will always get stung for VAT with UPS
