Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I had to replace the transformer with a 24v one to get the Nest Hello to work reliably and maintain a connection. Here's what I got:

The chime looks OK. The space where the bell looks a bit tight. The Nest Hello is about twice as wide as the old doorbell button. You should also check how much play you have in the wire behind the bell. I had very little and it was a pain to fit, especially as I was using the wedge to point it at an angle.

    Hi guys

I got the transformer above but am nervous of putting it in myself!

However, I sent the pic of my fuse box to someone and they said it wouldn’t fit and would need to be put in a separate enclosure beside the fuse box. Does this sound right?

I thought it would be a straight swap.

    Pic of fuse box attached.

    Thanks

A straight swap is possible. Both units a 2 mods wide and both are DIN rail mountable.

From a legal perspective only a registered electrical contractor should do this work. From a common sense perspective only a competent person should do this. It is not rocket science. There is no reason for a separate enclosure and it would look cr@p. If you are unsure of what you are doing I suggest that you do the sensible thing and get a qualified electrician to do this.

Ok thanks. It was a qualified electrician that told me it wouldn’t fit! And would be €240 for the work suggested. I’ll shop around!

From the photos both transformers look to be the same dimensions. Not only that but there is free space available to the right of the transformer mounted in the board.

Definitely get another electrician! There are chances out there.

Our hello never chimed the bell, which was no big deal as we got alerts other ways (mainly the dog going nuts).

However had an issue with the thermo & had an accredited nest pro out to fix it. Mentioned the hello to him and he changed out the transformer for €60. Old one was 30 years old.

That guy looking for €240 is chancing his arm.

    Hey all,
So santa dropped me a nest hello yesterday out of the blue.
Read this entire thread and know I need at least a 24v transformer added to my fuse box (and a spark to do it).
However the door chime I have doesn't look like anything else I've seen on the thread.
Anyone care to have a look and suggest an upgrade for the chime?
I've attached a image of the chime and the fusebox. I need to get a sparky in to do some wiring anyways in the near future so I'd guess I could ask them to throw on the transformer at the same time, right?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,322 ✭✭✭OfflerCrocGod

Chime looks like a normal two wire one. Yes transformer will have to be changed.

Thanks for that micks_address, I might just give it a crack and see, if I have to get the transformer changed then so be it.

As an aside, does the Nest Hello offer the option of connecting to 5Ghz WiFi? I have both bands available and IIRC 5Ghz might be easier for the device to process so in turn might get by with the lower voltage or is that just me showing my complete ignorance of both WiFi and all things electrical? :o

What's the bell transformer you used? Did it fit in perfectly in place of the hager one?

I got this from http://tradeelectriclighting.ie/stillorgan for about €13 IIRC and yes it fitted perfectly albeit I had to install it upside down for a reason I can't now remember. Possibly the amout of wiring I had to play with or something like that.

Is there any difference in the install process between buying the doorbell via google or buying one via ebay like the below for example?

Don't think so but you need to be sure the vendor is legit. How can he be selling genuine Nest Hello cameras for so much less than Google?

I got my one for £20 less than that price. Now it was black Friday but it's still an example on how the Google store over price some of their device's.

I've just installed the hello with the Garo 8/12/24 transformer, set to 24v. The hello works fine but my existingchime doesn't ring at all. The settings are correct in the app. The chime is new, Garo bim85, it runs on 12v too. I'm wondering if I need to get an 8v chime instead?

Change the transformer to 12v. Mine runs fine at 12v and is supported by nest.

Transformer should be fine. I assume your chime worked before the nest? Did you insert the nest wires in the chime? Chime rings if circuit is complete so maybe your circuit is broken somewhere? I've 12 volt chime with 24 v transformer all works fine..

Plenty of reports if hello dropping off WiFi if the voltage is lower than 16

Change the transformer to 12v. Mine runs fine at 12v and is supported by nest.

Switched it back to 12 v. No joy. I think its the connector as it works without it but the chime moves constantly. Will contact Google.

Plugged my nest in to a very old transformer (thinking it wouldn’t work - even had the replacement transformer ready) and it’s up and running fully. Video, notifications, everything. The app even says 0 volts but the problem is that my chime doesn’t work either after putting in the chime connection.

Google have disabled the voltage monitoring function in the app, that's why it's reading 0. See https://support.google.com/googlenest/thread/16045784?hl=en&msgid=20164141

It's frustrating that Google can't handle the load these readings were putting on their database

I have the same problem, can't get it to work at all. Brand new transformer.

Weird thing was, it worked kind of originally but was very sporadic when it would ring. Now not ringing at all when bell is pressed

What connections you have on your chime?
Mine is like below which nest instructions dont seem to recognise!

    OF, 1
    T3

Actually, since I don’t need the transformer (and the electrical shop was a bit out of the way) would anyone be interested in buying it from me and I’ll post it? DM me if so.

    Hi folks,

Currently in the US for a few days and I was pricing the Nest Hello which is a bit cheaper than back home. Is there any downside to purchasing a us version and would it work ok in Ireland? Thanks in advance.

Mine came from the US, no downside as far as i can see

I got mine from an ebay seller in the US in advance of the launch here. Never had any issues.

Have the NEST doorbell and it's working well
Only issue is there is a ton of static noise coming from the bellbox inside our hall.
Anyone know a sparky who is good with the NEST products ?

Do you mean the “consumer unit” (fuse board) ??

If so it could be the transformer. Some buzz loudly, as these units are non serviceable the only solution is to replace them. Luckily they are not too expensive (around €20).

Any half decent electrician should be ok. There is very little to installing Nest products.

I've bought lots of products in the USA.
The issue with Google stuff is power supplies, it's not really an issue here as you provide your own.

I've had USA bought ring and nest doorbells without issue.

I'm getting a lot of "Camera offline' messages over the last 10 days or so. Mostly the outages last 10-15 minutes then everything is back online but today I had an outage that lasted several hours.

No other WiFi connected devices are losing connection during the Nest outage periods.

Anyone else have similar problems recently?

I’ve had it twice over the last few nights. Only saw the mails in the mornings.

Also have had to sign back in via google a few times which is very annoying

    https://www.screwfix.ie/p/garo-8-12-24v-1a-bell-transformer/716hk?_requestid=150329

That'll do the trick for you. If you are getting a buzz make sure you don't have a delay in the electric chime, this will keep the transformer active and might give a buzz

Just looking for confirmation that this transformer will need to be replaced for a Nest Hello?

    Thanks

Just looking for confirmation that this transformer will need to be replaced for a Nest Hello?

It meets the requirements. 12v works fine for me but others had issues.

I had an 8v transformer and it was enough to power the camera but not enough to ring the bell as well, I was going to just use the Google Home announcements but that was WAY too loud so I picked up the transformer above in Screwfix and that did the trick. There was a bit of a buzz but that was because of the delay I had set int he app, once I cleared that it's perfect.

I'd replace it. My 12 V worked , but it worked better when I upgraded it to 24V

I got an email last night from Google to say I would be receiving a €5 refund as a Google nest aware subscriber.

I'm comfortable with installing items but when it comes to a fuse board I tend to lean on a qualified electrician. How much would it cost to upgrade the transformer?

  • Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators, Regional East Moderators Posts: 12,602 Mod ✭✭✭✭2011

How much would it cost to upgrade the transformer?

    The transformer costs around €20
Add to that the call out fee for the electrician (maybe €50) and even though it should only take 20 minutes most would charge for a minimum of 1 hour (maybe €40).

For the record although I am an electrician by trade I don’t do this work.

Will a Garo 24v doorbell transformer be ok for the doorbell, switching out from an 8v

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,322 ✭✭✭OfflerCrocGod

Yes, it's what we have. Works fine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,440 ✭✭✭BobbyT28

when someone rings the doorbell it use to show automatically on my nest hub, that has stopped now. It still announces that someone is at the door but doesn't automatically show the nest doorbell on the hub anymore.

Anyone ever have this issue? Both signed into the same Google account. Weird

Can anyone suggest where to source a 16 or 24 volt mechanical chime / bell as my transformer will be at that level ? Existing bell is 8.

I think the transformer is what needs to be changed rather than the chime itself, I got the transformer in Screwfix

My existing transformer is 8v as is the bell. From reading this thread I need a 16 or 24 v transformer for the Nest, which then means I need to change the bell I think.

Just the transformer I'd say, I'd the exact same setup as you and changing the transformer is all I needed to do.

Personally, i think if I'd to go through the hassle of changing the chime i wouldn't bother as the notifications on phone and speakers is more than enough

If the bell remains in circuit it must be rated for the applied voltage (24V)

Having said that I removed my doorbell as my Google Homes became my doorbell when I installed my Nest Hello.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 338 ✭✭RunDMC

I just changed the transformer, not the chime. It has worked well for over two years.

    I got it on Amazon.co.uk

    There are plenty of others.
