Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Hi, can anyone identify this plant, it has just finished flowering, bright yellow flowers, & now has these pods, wondering can I reuse them some else in the garden. Thanks for your help.

It's a tree peony..some are infertile and won't produce viable seed and most won't be true to the parent plant, but you can read more up on them if you want to give raising from seed a go.

Would anyone know what this might be please? It appeared this year and is spreading. It's got purple square stems (on the young growth anyway). Cheers.

    Hi,
Just made short video clips of two plants in the garden and I am interested in finding out what they are.

There is one that I planted a few years back but have forgotten what it is. It is about 2 metres tall and sprouts up to flower about this time each year since I planted it. It is not very easy to make out on the green background but it has leaves that are very segmented and it has bunches of small flowers at the end of tall stalks.

There is also this wild plant that I did not weed out in the spring when tidying up around a newly planted mixed hedge. It has spread fairly quickly to form a thick enough mat and the flowers are tiny. It seems to be more like a weed than a wild flower so if someone can confirm it is not something useful I might remove it to help the common daisy, the gooseberry and the olearia shrub that it is growing around.

    Thanks for any suggestions.

It is similar but the yarrow I have growing elsewhere seems to have thinner leaf segments.

The second looks like Lesser Swinecress, Lepidium didymus, no harm in it but most gardeners would consider it a weed

Looked at the photographs online and it looks like you have identified it alright. Thanks!

I think I will dig it out since I only just planted the gooseberry cuttings that it is growing over so I want to help them settle in. It's their first year growing there and they wont have a full root system yet so might not be able to compete with the swinecress.

I think it is a fairly common weed and not a big worry. Is it the plant called fat hen?

Fat-hen. A sign of fertile soil but is an annual that spreads quickly. You'd need to hand pull or cut down before it sets seed. A general weed killer will also do the job.

What is this type of weed? It is rapidly taking over my lawn

It looks like couch or scutch grass. It will spread in a lawn and is difficult to get rid of. You would need a glyphosate weed killer that will get to the roots - it has a very extensive root system, and if you treat the scutch you will have some lawn repair to do afterwards.

Hey all. Any idea what this is. Got it from a sell who wasn't sure what it is. I feel it had potential. Not the healthiest at the moment mind you

Thanks for this, not what I wanted to hear though! Is this the same weed? It is popping up in places throughout my lawn too:

I can only stress I still believe it to be Sunflower because of the leaf shape.

First two veins emerge from the leaf petiole before the leaf proper begins.

    Can anyone ID this wildflower/weed?

I've had loads of them popping up in my garden, they seem to grow very quickly.
I've ripped up most of them but left a few as they look nice enough

    Thanks!

Looks like rosebay willowherb (Chamaenerion angustifolium) - I get this all the time in my gardens. Pops up constantly.

Thanks, I'd seen that one mentioned on some wildflower lists but didn't realise it was what I had as the flowers haven't opened up yet.

It seems to be good for pollinators so I might leave some where they are for the moment.

It does go to seed very fast. While I let some wild flowers grow away in my own garden and even spread seeds from some this willow herb is one I try to remove whenever I see it. The flowers don't last very long and are very quickly replaced by masses of fury seeds that are wind dispersed so even if you try remove it there will always be some more blow in. It also has a bad habit of growing up through other plants so even very dense healthy shrubs or flower beds can have their appearance disrupted by these weeds.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,774 ✭✭✭✭looksee

Have you ever looked at one of those furry seedpods as it is opening? They are very pretty and a magnificent piece of engineering! Though granted this is not a good reason for leaving them as you will have an entire garden of willowherb in no time.

Hi my garden is full of these vines, my grass isn't in great shape and I plan to feed it. The garden is about a year old.

I've just started pulling up the vines that's when I realised how bad it is. What's the best way to get rid of them.

    Cheers

What kind of vines? Would you be able to post a picture, please? (if it's there already, apologies, I can't actually see it).

The one on the right looks like a small walnut, the one in the middle I'm not sure - if it's a variety of (wal)nut I wouldn't know which one.

Looks like a walnut and would not be fully developed if you picked them now. Skin should be very oily if you stick your nail into it, and will stain.

Leaves on the walnut tree will look similar to ash

...but much, much larger than ash, and will have a lovely scent, quite similar to laurel.
