Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Sorry. Was on the phone and didn't think the text would post when it said the image was too big. Here it is
This looks like Corncockle, very common in "wildflower" seed mixes

It's lychnis coronaria, lovely little plant.

No picture I'm afraid but trying to figure out what plant I had years ago

It was quite woody with long thin branches that were a vivid red and it flowered very early in the year.

Could it be a form of cystitis/broom?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,802 ✭✭✭✭looksee

Most likely plant for red stems is dogwood, there may be others.

It could quite easily be something else, but when celery grows 'wild' - unblanched - it tends to be bushy. Break a stem, does it smell of celery?

Definitely not celery, the leaves are all wrong. I'm almost certain it's a weed, but I don't know what it's called. Let's see if I can come up with anything helpful.

Could it be hemlock (which is toxic)?

No, you are right, I didn't register the twig on the left, definitely not celery.

Edit - don't think it is hemlock either though, that is more feathery/carrotty.

One thing for sure: just to be on the safe side, I wouldn't add it to my soup. :p

What's the name of that weed with yellow flowers that people are supposed to remove from their land but that very few do? It's bad for cows, horses, etc. Ragweed or ragwort, or something like that. I think that's what it is.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,956 ✭✭✭✭Mam of 4

Thank you both for being so helpful , out it goes so :)
And I definitely won't be making soup !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,802 ✭✭✭✭looksee

I don't think it is ragwort - could it be something like parsely / chervil / coriander (I'm not great on herbs :D ) Parsley gets a seed stem a bit like the yellow one shown, not sure it has side shoots like that though.

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 77,033 Mod ✭✭✭✭New Home

No, it's not parsley either, the stalks are too large for that. And the leaves aren't right for that, either. Not sure about the other two, but I really don't think it's a herb.

Ragwort. That was my first thought.

The purple one look a bit like Larkspur, but lack the actual spur, so I don't think that's it. It's not delphinium, either. Hmmm.

    EDIT: Harebell, maybe?

Here's a better one of the purple could it be tick clover?

This one is Delphinum (actually, no, the leaves are wrong), but it looks different to the one growing through the rose. And I don't think it's tick clover, either (look at the leaves).

The first pic looks like campanula.

I think these are Lady gloves and I've just found out they are toxic all over.
How much of a threat are they to pets - cats?

Yes, they are foxgloves, ladys fingers etc - and very nice ones too. I've had them around cats, dogs, sheep, cattle, hens, ducks, geese etc down the years and never had a problem. They are harmful if ingested and most animals steer well clear of them and other noxious/toxic plants.

That's what I wanted to hear. Thanks a million. I was worried the cats may have a nibble on them for some reason.

If you closely examined the contents of your garden you would find any number of plants that are toxic to some degree. Animals - especially cats - don't tend to eat things that are poisonous to them (unless the plants are hidden in hay or silage) and since cats roam anyway there is no point worrying about what might poison them.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,497 ✭✭✭auspicious

Cheers looksee. In some articles I read, the words - potentially-deadly-if-swallowed were attributed to Foxgloves. Knowing there was a potential danger to the cats where they often hangout I thought I'd seek advice from you very knowledgeable peeps.

I scarified 20 years worth of moss off a lawn and overseeded it... now in its place, weeds are doing their best to fill in the gaps, I never sprayed them before scarifying, I'm just going to remove what I can.

What is this reddish weed? Some sort of tree? It has popped up in 2 or 3 different spots.

I first seen them grown up in the Zoo a couple of months ago and was struck by their strange shape and beauty. I dont see many around but need to add them to my tropical style garden.
