Anyone have experience with both Nike Epic React and Nike fly flyknit?

Looking for something for man Ironman marathon which means I more than likely will not be pushing hard and mostly just plodding through the marathon. Leaning towards Epic React as I think they will be more cushioned soft and bouncier than the flyknit but maybe I’m wrong?

I have the fly flyknit and odyssey react. I find the flyknit better. It has the react foam, but with the carbon fibre plate which seems (to me) to give you a bit more bounce later in the race.

I have both the Epic React and Fly Flyknit. I like both but the Fly Flyknit really do well at faster paces and the carbon plate kicks in the faster you go, notice this a lot. They have a higher stack height then most, similar to hoka clifton and really push you forward in your stride 10mm drop I think. All kinds of PB's done in them already. Epic react are great too but Fly Flyknit are at 111 euro right now and are great value IMO.

If you normally use support shoes would the Fly Flyknit still be an option? Only for some faster workouts and races?

    Hi folks,

my Brooks Ravenna 9's have long outstayed their welcome after covering over 860 miles in them since last July.

Has anyone here worn these and if so, did you go for something different when you retired them?

I wouldn't necessarily have a problem is going for the sane or equivalent in Brooks now but would be open to suggestions.

Am currently doing approx 40 miles a week and coming to the end of a 14 week training block. DCM training proper begins in July after a 6 week base training block.

    Thanks.
    :)

A pair of Hoka Gaviota’s and ASICS GT-1000’s on the way. Got the Hoka on their clearance page (€105) and the Ascis on MandM Direct (€69). Have an issue with a pair of Hoka’s I have now giving me blisters on my arches, I love how soft they feel and they’re ideal for my arthritic foot so hoping it was a one off. I hadn’t done much research with the previous pair and it wasn’t a structured shoe and it was a line that discontinued.

Got a pair of Nike Vomero 14's as a change to the Pegasus 35's, I have done 3 runs in them so far (5m, 7m & 10m).

First impressions are they are very well made and i think they will last longer than the pegasus. When i went for my first run in them they felt stiff and clunky and i thought this would get better once broken in, But on my second run i had 2 miles at HMP (6.30min/m) and found it very hard to feel smooth when running at pace like i do in the pegasus.
During the last 10mile run at 8.00 min/m i found them a bit better so maybe they take have broken in.
i think i will try them for a bit more and i will then look to go back to the pegasus 36 when they are released and i will also stick to the Turbos for the faster paced runs and races.

I have a pair of Mizuno Wave Rider 19s that I love but have 800km on them and starting to need replacing. I got a pair of Wave Rider 22s at christmas and ordered the same size but sportsdirect relabeled them so what I wanted was a 45 but got a 45.5. Half a size too big and not as comfortable. I get blisters and numb feeling towards my big to along my arch. What sort of insole or insert could I use to help this?

Picked up another pair of Lidl's €20 runners this morning, last pair I bought are over 1.5k km at this stage and still holding together ok albeit with some wear & tear on the sole. As always they have exactly one pair in the shop in the size I take so have to be in there early!

Just for a bit of an experiment I ran a 74k trail ultra with the Lidl runners last weekend, seemed fine although if (when!) I do it again might try one of the extreme cushioned shoes (Hooka?) as lots of the route was on rocky trails or through forests with loads of tree roots.

The Lidl crivit runners are an absolute steal it needs to be said. I'm alternating them with a set of the Brooks launch series and definitely prefer the fit of the Lidl ones. Insoles are a bit grim, but easily remedied with the ones that lidl tend to sell at the same time for under a fiver. I pick up a pair every year for general wear. Last years effort had the added bonus of not looking as fugly as they did in years previous too.

When you consider the price of most running shoes, having a good set for 20 quid is an absolute no brainer - even if only to make your "good" shoes last that bit longer.

Tried on a pair of Nike Pegasus 36's today. They look very similar to the 35's but seem less narrow, more spacious in the toe box and probably will be a size 8.5 UK for me ( I was a UK 9 in the 35 and 34's).

I will probably purchase at a later date as I have few of the 35's on the go at the minute.

I've gone through a couple of pairs of 35's and really like them, but since I got a pair of Epic Reacts I haven't done a whole lot of running in the Pegasus apart from when it's wet out as the Epics aren't great in slippery conditions. Ever tried the Epics?

I haven't tried the epics as of yet. I have been pretty loyal to the Pegasus over the years. I find them pretty versatile for most runs (tempo, MP, easy, recovery). Adidas bostons are my go to for sessions and races. Are the epics as versatile?

Yeah apart from wet conditions they're pretty versatile. That react foam is the business :) you'd pick up a pair of the first version for about 80 quid if you shop around.

Has anyone on here ever tried the saucony liberty iso shoes? They're supposed to be in the same kind of lightweight support category as the Adidas tempo and new balance 1500. They're on sportsshoes.com for 57 euro at the moment.

I ran DCM in them last year, I love them, the only problem for some would be they are very narrow fitting and the stripe going down the front can irritate the toes, but it didn't bother me. I'd say go and try them on and see what you think

I've just done 400 miles in them and still as comfy when I first bought them. Will be buying another pair shortly. I've heard people mention the stripe irritating but I've never felt it. Lifestyle sell them if you want to try them on and you can pick up a cheap enough pair online if your lucky

I treated myself to a new pair of racing shoes and decided to go with the well rated Reebok Floatride Run Fast as i could not justify the Vaporfly 4% Price.
First impression is they are light and comfortable, I wore them this morning on a 7 mile run with 2 fast miles(6.30min/m) and i have to say they are fantastic. Just enough cushioning and responsive, I did feel the spring from toe off.
I think they will work well for me from 5k to HM but not sure if they will work for DCM, Will have a better idea after the cork half this weekend.

This is a cracking shoe, I've 250+ miles on a pair, beginning to show some signs of wear. The midsole comes over the rubber (which is fantastically grippy), so it's beginning to flake in some areas and the material at the center of the heel tab has begun to fray. But I'll get at least another 250 from them.

I've ran 16 on the road and 26.2 on the treadie, so they are great for longer stuff.

I did however swap out the insoles and laces as I felt I wasn't fully secure in them, particularly if cornering fast.

    Hey people

Sooo many shoes out there. My stable all rounder are NB 880s.

I have 250m on Nike Pegasus 35. Such a nice shoe but just don't suit my feet. Got me a marathon PB so can't complain too much.

Time to rotate in some new shoes. I'm looking at Adidas Boston 7s if anyone wears them, thoughts?

As I was saying to MacPhisto, definitely worth considering the Epic Reacts. Nicest regular mileage shoe I've ran in by a distance. Not great in wet conditions but the feel is something else. Light too. I've 700k in my first pair and they're going strong.

Boston is up there with all-rounder of the decade and durable.
I've had 3 pairs and about 2k miles, keeping my eye out for another pair.

They are typical Adios fit, so a little narrow, but might be ok coming from the Peg. The 7 is a little more generous than the 5 and 6, I had to half a size up on those, and I have narrow feet.

I am curious to hear what you think of them,

I wore them of the cork Half and i cannot fault them. Very happy with my purchase.

First run on the Boston 7s was very good. I sized a half size up as I have wide feet and though I was worried at first looking at them out of the box (pretty but narrow) I loosened the laces and had a good run.

Prompted me to look at my other shoes.

2x pairs of New Balance 880v7 2E and at 560m and 580m respectively have both been retired.

New Balance 880v8 2E has been a good work horse for all types of runs but at 418m the last tempo I did was probably the last one. Easy runs only now.

Then I took a punt on Nike Zoom Pegasus 35. Nice shoe that I got a total of 22 runs from! 280m total but 12.7m average per run and all of those were tempo or speed plus I did a marathon on them. Overall despite the work, I found them too narrow and they wore away and compressed quickly. The foam looks like it needs an iron and the outer heel has no rubber (I under pronate/supinate so I fall back on my heel as soon as I get tired and lose form).

I was tempted to size up and try the Pegagus 35 or 36 again but lost toe nails and regular blisters confirms this great shoe is just not for me sadly.

So, New Balance 1500v5 on the way for speed and Adidas Solar Glide on route for easy miles. I'll use the Boston 7s for Tempo and LRs. I thought about the NB 880s again but the Boston 7s just showed me how heavy they are (particularly the 2E version)

QQ even with a 3 shoe rotation all 3 shoes will be pushing 300m+ by the time I taper for DCM. What is the latest you would rotate in a new pair of shoes prior to a marathon?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,188 ✭✭✭MY BAD
