Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Heard Irelands Eye is out of bounds for anyone out of Howth or Malahide. No access is allowed and there was a recent issue on the island that involved the Gardai. Anyone know any thing about that?

I understood all islands along with their ferry services were placed off limits to non residents early in this crisis and boaters were specifically asked not to breach the islands quarantine by travelling to and landing on (inhabited?) islands.

But there's always someone who's "cleverer" than the rest of us sheeple.

I got out with the kids the other evening off Greystones, it's great that they are at the stage where they can launch and be told wait in the harbour until I come around, there is a lot to be said for kids doing Frostbites to get their confidence and boat handling up to speed!
We headed out for a while then rafted up for a chat and a snack, the muppet in the kayak was looking for a tow home so I pointed out that if he had enough energy to annoy his sister then he had more than enough energy to paddle home, he then made rookie mistake number one and told me that we was just going to hang onto the line, the expression on his face when I reminded that there were two end on a line then cast him off was priceless :D

With the restrictions of movement being extended to countywide on Monday, does this mean we can visit other harbours/marinas in the same county? Would love a spin around to Dun Laoghaire for a night if we get a nice weekend.....

    Don't see why not.

I'd ring the marina first to see if they are accepting visitors.

Oh absolutely, that would go without saying.

And I’d imagine if they are accepting visitors, their facilities would still be closed off, but that would be up to each marina to plan for.

According to Irish Sailing, it sounds like that would be fine.

As Steve said, I'd be checking with DL marina first though.

Didn’t look it as when he weighed anchor, he headed around towards the Bailey.

He was in Ireland’s Eye when we arrived, and only returned to his boat when she started to list.

    More info published here:

    Phase 2 Personal FAQs

When can I work on / lift in my boat?
Monday 18th of May, boat yards, marinas, and other marine leisure business were opened to facilitate essential maintenance, lifting and security of boats. From Monday 8th of June if your boat is within your county or 20km from home (Ph2+) and Nationwide (Ph3).

    When can I go sailing?
In Phase 2+ single handed or mixed household multi-handed supervised and non-supervised activity, as well as day sailing, windsurfing or powerboating once maintaining social distancing of 2m and travel within your county or 20km from home (Ph2+) and Nationwide (Ph3).

In phase 2+ can I go Sailing in my own boat with members of other households if I can maintain Social Distancing?
Yes mixed household crew for multi handers in compliance with social distancing.
~ So, if you have a boat big enough to sail with social distancing then it is a good chance to see what is possible in a non-competitive environment.
~ You do your own risk assessment and protocols to see what is possible.

I am over 70, when can I go sailing?
Current guidelines state that “those who are cocooning can leave their homes in line with current travel restrictions to exercise or a drive as long as they avoid all contact with other people.” If you can comply with this restriction, then sailing, windsurfing and powerboating are considered as ‘exercise’.

    Are marinas accepting visiting boats?
Irish Sailing are seeking confirmation from Marina Operators, in the meantime check before you travel.

What is meant by ‘Home Port’?
“Home port” in this document refers to your launch site or where your boat currently lies. It may be possible to end your trip in a different port if both are within current travel restrictions.
Does the 20km / travel within county distance apply to my boating area?
The travel restrictions apply for travel to your boat or launch site to prevent the spread between counties. Whilst on the open water there is minimal risk of spread of the virus within the county shoreline.

    Can I anchor offshore overnight?
    Yes

Can I sail to visit another harbour?
Yes as long as it is within your own County or 20km from your home.

There's two more Saturdays left in the DBSC series, but the DMYC September Series is under way http://dmyc.ie/afloat/september-series/.

Then once that finishes, the Turkey Shoot gets going in mid-October I think - Sunday mornings until mid-December. Great fun!

ETA - just looked at the September Series results - there ain't a whole lot of boats in it this year! So I doubt that's the reason for low entries in Howth.....

    Serious bit of kit!

Something like that is the EuroMillions boat!! (if winning north of €120M)

Maybe not as big though!! I'd settle for a hundred footer.

(less than €100m and its probably only a nice 80-90ft Swan)

If I bought for €2m, I'd probably need to set aside another 8m for its running costs for a couple of years..

Not to my taste, that kind of money buys you a world of choice.

I'm just glad I got the boat launched early into the lifting of restrictions, and got a few days out on her before the weather returned to being Irish!!

They are not the sort of thing you can buy new unless you went straight to the manufactures, your best bet would be ebay unless someone has one sitting in the shed off a non runner. As said above you will need to know the horsepower the year it was made the model and if it is 2 stroke or 4 stroke.

Big thing with the Wave was the social side to it and it was going to be impossible to do in the current climate. We,re meant to be doing the offshore to cork weekend after next and we,re even wondering will that go ahead with 25 boats and if it does will we be able to get in for a few pints and a night on the marina before heading back to dublin or will we just have to turn back straight away.

Was out on Saturday around Ireland’s Eye and there were about 10 Cruisers out of Howth, about 4-5 Puppeteers and a couple of squibs, and the Howth 17’s were just finishing up (they were by far the largest fleet out).

There were also about 10-12 boats out of Malahide racing....

I think it’s time to just call the racing season, and perhaps finish up whatever round the cans series are on-going..

The Dublin to Cork sounds great, but as Neris says, will it be much fun if you have to cross the finish line and turn back for Dublin??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,068 ✭✭✭✭neris

17s were having their championship yesterday & Friday night. The pups and squib were club racing. We were on the isora and was about 20 boats for that. We were in on the beach at greystones on the way back to D.L and the amount of people on the beach in groups wasn't what the govt would like to see

Seapoint on the way home from Dublin Bay racing was a fairly depressing sight as well.

We spent a week on the Shannon last week, including 2 nights in Banagher (Offaly), and overall we ate out 4 nights.
3 of the nights we were walk in’s and they never even asked for our names or contact details. (1st night we reserved so they had my details)

Same in the few shops I went into. I got funny looks for being the only one wearing a mask.

Contrast this to one day we went for lunch in a Dublin pub/restaurant a few weeks ago and it was mightily impressive how well they managed the new regulations....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,548 ✭✭✭✭HeidiHeidi

I was in a very remote town in Donegal for a lot of the last two weeks, and was amazed (and delighted) at how diligent everyone was with mask-wearing in the shops, and using of hand sanitiser. The local restaurant was bookings only, and they have a one-way system around the rooms.

It was really busy with camper vans, and some of the more popuar/well-known beaches were absolutely jammers.

Sorry, this is dragging the "boating" thread very off-topic!

Heading back to howth about 11 last night and was a beach party going on beside the Bailey. Music, lights, fires, tents. Its a hard to get to spot aswell so not exactly folks in a mid life crisis. Been like that for last while.

Looking through some of the events to be held on the east coast theres still a fair few club regattas and national championships to be held. Could see the DL regatta in early September going ahead. Very few visitors and DL crews heading to their own clubs and limited mixing but things like Greystones and national championships where there will be a good few boats visiting could be put off. Interesting one this weekend thats still going ahead in the Optimist nationals in Cork. 1 kid sailing brings both parents and maybe a sibling or 2.

the sailing side of it could probably go ahead but its the social side and numbers of people in the bar where the issues would kick in. bit of outside the box thinking could make it go ahead in some capacity
