20 - 25 years will definitely depend on what it is.

    https://www.abbeyautoline.co.uk/car-insurance/classic-vehicle-insurance/
ROI Residents – A vehicle has to be 25+ years old; although consideration will be given on a bespoke basis.

NI Residents – A vehicle has to be 20+ years old; although consideration will be given on a bespoke basis.

Well, I rang around a heap of insurance companies and drew an absolute blank. No chance of getting a TT on a classic policy until it's at least 20 years old.

Only one company would even quote me on it as a regular car because my NCB was used up on my passenger car and commercial policies.

€1,200 was the quote I was given.

1200 is a lot of money, but, its not a bad quote considering the age of the car, its a performance model, and they are putting you down as having zero NCB.

All true, but it's a thousand Euros more than I'm currently paying to insure my Prelude. Money talks in this case I'm afraid.

This question has been beat to death but ive read through about 30 pages trying to get some more info on this.... so im 25, i have my own commercial policy on my van but i also have a 95 rx7 (jap import that is box standard which i bought when i was 16 as im a genuine entusiast not a tyre burner) that im looking to insure,

now i know its pretty much out of the question just ringing up insurance companies for a quote but is there any way or 'loophole' for a better word, that could get me insured such as:

    1. insuring my father and being a named driver?
    2. Having my father insure it on fbd/campion on open drive as i think someone said anyone between 25-70 can drive it then?
    3. take out a private policy on my van and use third party extension and have my father insured on the rx7?
    4. do the same as the 3rd point but instead of a van i use a car? does 3rd party cover allow driving classic cars?
    5. being put on trade insurance (my uncle and cousin both own car sales business' and garages)(last resort)

do any of these work or is my only actual option wait another 5 years?

    ANY help is really appreciated
    Thanks in advance

If car was in say father's name, and father had it as classic policy with you named as additional driver you may be covered.

Another option is if you had a policy that allowed you to drive any other car as long as you don't own it (check details as they can change from year to year) then you might be able to drive if you got say insurance in a yaris, that allowed you to drive other cars. Beware some drive other cars jave catches such as Max 2L engine (rotary is added complication) or can't be owned by other householder.

Either way its not going to be free, and if you are setting up a new policy with no no claims it will be expensive in year one. Some insurers might take commercial cover into consideration.

    Hey guys
I'm looking classic insurance. I have a 1985 ae86 which is is vintage now in the South I am also a member of a vintage car club with membership number. I tried to insure the car today with fbd but they will not accept jap cars. I have a private van policy also I am a named driver on another daily car policy but the companies seem to want me to have a car policy in my name.
I've read some off these threads and seems that autoline is my only option.
Just before I make the call can you guys give me any tips or Guidance as regards
    What will they look for?
Do they look for a daily car policy in my name?
What policy is the best to go for with them?
    Car is an ae86
    1985
    Tax and tested in ROI
Also I've a 1993 vauxhall Cavalier turbo can I insure it also
It is NI Reg but can bé clear in the future
I'm not too worried about the cavalier as it will qualify with Fbd in 2 years

Gerry - I tried Autoline last Jan for my '83 car and they would not quote. Because, either I did not have a garage/driveway (but do have gated underground, but they weren’t happy with that), and/or because I wanted to be able to drive to work the odd time. I think they would have otherwise. Not sure about the origin of the car as mine is German. FBD were OK on both points but unfortunately this does not help you. Best of luck!

Phoned them 2 day they have to get back to me Monday after consulting management .
But having just a commercial policy seems to be a stumble block they quoted me 500 for a fergie fe35, ae86 and cavalier turbo just insured for stationary fire n theft.
Hopefully good news monday but I'm not hopeful.
Is anyone else insured with them with only a commercial policy

I have car insurance paid up with first ireland till November. Hoping to upgrade my current car without losing this years NCB and without paying for a second policy. Can you transfer car insurance from one car to another and pay the difference or what is the best option?

Is the policy due in November a classic car or daily policy?
Is the new to you car a classic or daily car.?

Simple phone your insurer in advance so you can drive new car home.
If you are not trading in the 1st car then ask will the insurance give your temporary cover for 1 hour to have both cars driven home. They’ll normally allow same free as good gesture as less chance of you shopping around for cheaper rates of insurance. Enjoy new car

    Hey lads

I'm trying to get insured on an 80s Pajero, already have a normal car and policy. Im with First Ireland with my day car, and they wouldn't touch it. They said it wasn't on their list of classic cars. I even enquired about switching my policy to the Pajero from my current car (and selling it) but they flat out refused.

Carole Nash said the same thing, that it's not on their list of classic cars. Where can I go with this? I gave autoline a ring and they're gonna get back to me. Any advise would be appreciated.

I renewed the cover on my MkII Escort RS2000 the other day with First Ireland.

On the face of it €230 for comp. and a high agreed value sounds relatively inexpensive. In reality I only drove the car once in the last 12 months so it's actually hideously expensive on a per mile basis.

Got a quote today from First Ireland for 2 type £ Vw Fastbacks, 272 euro for both. Up a bit from last year.

Called Carole Nash for a quote on a 00 gti golf yesterday and they said they would only cover gti golf's from 97 back. Anybody else have this issue ?

    Hi all,

I'm thinking about buying a classic beetle. I rang axa and fbd and they require 5 years NCB, unfortunately I only have 3.

Do you know any insurers that don't require 5 years NCB?

I’m looking at buying a BMW Z3 around 97-99. Anyone get insurance for something like this? Will it need to be 20 or 25 years old?

    Hi All,

I'm looking to get insurance for my dad on a 1986 Mini City he has gotten restored,

He has full licence as he is a truck driver, he is only a named driver on mothers car so doesn't have any no claims years on his own policy.

I've tried a few already online and they won't quote, anyone recommend any companies?

    Thanks

Try Barrett Private Insurance (they're a broker), they tend to be good at this kind of thing.

Alternatively, transfer the Mini to your mother, and she could get classic easy enough, and put your father on as a named driver on that classic policy.

Yeah tried them earlier this week, on a single classic car policy the minimum car value has to €25k so that rules them out!

What’s the story here with Tax?

So I am thinking maybe get an electric car for my commute , doing around 1000km a week in total for my commute and lifestyle.

was thinking getting an electric car for during the week but obviously need something decent for the weekend, so was thinking like a 90’s 5 series with a nice engine for the weekends.

if I have classic insurance do I automatically get classic tax or is there such a thing as classic tax, and what would be the rate?

  • Registered Users Posts: 22,028 ✭✭✭✭Esel

Car has to be at least 30 years from date of first registration, and you need to change the tax class. Tax is less than €60 then afaik.

    Not your ornery onager

Is there battery cars 30 plus years for sale vintage?

  • Registered Users Posts: 671 ✭✭✭scar 101

just a quick question here for anyone who might be the same im 25 turning 26 soon and many classic "Insurers" have said to me that the ages for a person to insure a classic has changed from over 25 to over 30, is anyone else having this problem? like even trying to get an mx5 under a classic insurance is a joke right now

I had a garage business which closed and using trade policy and now find it hard to get cover for both my cars or mad prices.

First car as main car is a 2001 spacewagon 2.0 petrol.

Second is another jap import Chariot 1989 1.8 petrol.

If my 2001 was 2003 i could get cover for both but is outside limitations of guide lines sucks.

Anybody try outside of Ireland in the EU to get cover.

I could get trade cover but quoted 1080 euro so shopping around.

Full no claims, points or other since 2009 letter.

Moving from trade to private they dont want to issue a new policy as was not in my name but a named driver.

So looking for ideas as many insurers tried and only high quotes and only need Fire and Theft.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,590 ✭✭✭zg3409

Full Electric cars are all 120 euro per year tax. Hybrids and plug in hybrids are different.

I think the op is asking about cheap tax for a classic gas guzzler for weekend use.

Beware if you have 2 cars, you may need 2 separate insurance policies both with separate no claims, so one policy would have a high cost.

I recommend getting insurance quotes in advance of buying anything. You may be able to get a classic policy depending on car type and age, but it varies a lot by insurer and car etc.

I eventually got cover on both cars with LHK brokers and was not easy and first was my 2001 which is my main car to drive.

Before i could entertain my classic car i needed to join the classic car club E60 a year

Then eventually i got my classic insured with a different company thru LHK.

You have to have a main car insured before you can get the classic car insured.
