Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

That’s such a relief, but I have to ask how? That was an explosion.

Romain looks like he took some injury there. But looking good considering the impact he took.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,026 ✭✭✭PsychoPete

Says a lot about the safety of F1 cars that you can have that kind of accident and walk away from it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,709 ✭✭✭This is it

Looks ok for the most part thankfully

Concrete wall there. Great track design.

Thank **** he's alright. I wasn't too worried about fire but at full speed the car seemed to stop very quickly.

Been saying it for years, drivers all drive around like there's no consequences to being a prick at 150+mph. The fact he "got away" with that one will only reinforce their ****ery.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,185 ✭✭✭rameire

there seemed to be around 3 or 4 stewards at the point of impact.
they all seemed to run away instantly, hopefully no major issues with them.

That was scary. Sickening actually. And the lack of a replay wasn't a good sign, but thankfully looks relatively OK

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,648 ✭✭✭✭skipper_G

That was a shocking looking crash. Really glad to see him out of the car

HANS device saved his life there. As much as I complain about the Halo and the HANS kinda ruins the visual of the guys driving the cars the HANS has saved a lot of lives over th e years.

Reminds me a bit of that Alonso crash from a few years back. The car was in a crumpled ball and he walked away with a minor ankle injury.

Must have been some impact to leak/ignite the fuel

Many many years since I’ve seen a car go up in flames like that

The worry with fires is more what you're breathing in, the fireproof clothing doesn't prevent you breathing in the gases.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,686 ✭✭✭Charlie-Bravo

That was horrible looking. Not showing any replay yet. Hope Marshalls are all ok.

Brundle is right - thats a miracle.

Look at the ****ing car!!! HOW HAS HE WALKED AWAY FROM THAT!

How did he get out of that, Jesus.

    Jesus

So happy we can see that replay if you know what I mean,

That is just unbelievable , the car sliced in half - to see him hobble away says so much for how far they have come in terms of safety.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,026 ✭✭✭PsychoPete

    That is absolutely unbelievable

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,467 ✭✭✭h3000

Jesus ****. I’m genuinely a bit emotional after seeing that.

This race is going to have to be cancelled I'd say

Fire isn't usually a worry, happens in Indycar and it's not usually a sign of anything too bad.

I was wrong, barrier rather than concrete, halo must've done it's job. Those barriers clearly aren't up to the job.

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,648 ✭✭✭✭skipper_G

Ripped the car in half, it's a miracle he's walked away from that

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,884 ✭✭✭Tzardine

I can see the race being scrapped.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 407 ✭✭tipp_tipp_tipp

Wow, I'm in shock. That is the most horrible crash I've seen. What a miracle.

Jesus his car is literally sliced in half. Incredible he walked away from that, thank god he did.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,905 ✭✭✭Joeface

Holy everything . How did he walk out of that.
    That was insane

I could not see on the replay why he cut across Dani K so sharp. Was he avoiding some else.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,884 ✭✭✭Tzardine

That has to rattle the rest of the drivers looking at that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,295 ✭✭✭✭ctrl-alt-delete

    Why? Should be grand.

There is a lot of clean up and repair to be done there.

The race director is there observing the scene anyways.

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,648 ✭✭✭✭skipper_G

    Why? Should be grand.

I agree, they don't need to cancel but considerable repairs to be done. Will be here for a while

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,990 ✭✭✭Cool_CM

He is a very very lucky boy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,026 ✭✭✭PsychoPete

Looking at that replay and pictures of the barrier, I'm amazed he survived that

The halo is under the barrier.

The more I look at this the more I wonder how, even with the various safety devices in F1 cars these days, Romain has survived that?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,686 ✭✭✭Charlie-Bravo

Feeling sick to the stomach seeing the aftermath.

Fearing the worst when they didn't show a replay. Thank **** he's okay.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,884 ✭✭✭Tzardine

Very lucky boy - he caused it too by the looks of it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,197 ✭✭✭christy c

So relieved to see him get out, when we didn't see a replay i feared the worst.

  • Registered Users Posts: 340 ✭✭Zookey123

How he walks away from that god only knows. Worst crash I have ever seen. Great engineering saved his life.

Question is what happened to his car to veer off like that?

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,790 ✭✭✭✭Burkie1203

    Why? Should be grand.

That barrier could take several hours minimum to repair. It's nearly 6pm over there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,295 ✭✭✭✭ctrl-alt-delete

Obviously that barrier is not designed to take that kind of impact, it is a freak accident that has took the car into it at that angle.

The more i see it the more i wonder how the hell he got out - looks like he was on the other side of the barrier? but it looks like the halo was lodged in the barriers?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,836 ✭✭✭geotrig

I'm assuming it's more or less protocol these days to not show replays for big crashed shunts until all is seen to be ok? There was so much happening it's hard to make out what happened from what I've seen so far

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,028 ✭✭✭H3llR4iser

How the hell do they still allow steel guard rails around a racetrack - it's been proven time and again they're just unsuitable for the job, as they tend to "grab and slice" - exactly like happened here. Even a concrete wall would've been a much better solution there - the car sliding across it and dispersing energy.

Also, the chassis did its job to a T - breaking at the designated stress point (behind the driver). Magnificient engineering.
