John Lenihan - I only became aware of this man when reading a newspaper article last year . Con Houlihan once wrote that of all our unsung heroes he was just about the most unsung
World Mountain racing champion in 1999 but what is most impressive is his toughness and durability - winner of the annual Carrauntoohil mountain race 19 times - unbelievable really
Coupled with the fact that he overcame serious injury to do so ranks him for me right up there with the best sportspeople Ireland has produced.
I am currently reading his book Tough as Leather , I would follow most sports and to be honest I don't know how I was not aware of an athlete of that calibre in our country for so long0 -
Something that came to my mind yesterday. Remember following the breaking story on the news
Payne Stewart celebrates victory in the 1999 US Open, only 4 months before his tragic death when the Learjet he was travelling in lost cabin pressure and crashed after flying on autopilot until it ran out of fuel. Stewart and the others on board would have been long dead before the crash.
He was the last of the mainstream golfers to wear the traditional 'plus fours' when playing.0 -

That was the greatest Wimbledon ever. I watched pretty much all of it with a few weeks off between finishing college and starting work. Barry Cowan - an unknown Brit given a wildcard entry - came from two sets to love down against Sampras, who was still invincible at that stage, to take the match to a final set. It wasn't until the fourth round that Sampras' Wimbledon aura started to fade - losing to Federer in a genuine changing of the guard match. Sampras had won seven of the previous eight Wimbledons, but 2002 was his last year to play. Federer had never won a match at Wimbledon in two previous attempts. Federer said afterwards that he didn't think anyone would ever dominate tennis the way Sampras had.This post has been deleted.
The semi between Henman and Ivanisevic was incredible; Ivanisevic had a genuine mental meltdown on court, losing the third set 6-0 to go two sets to one down. I think he was even called up for kicking the net in frustration - had completely lost it. So to recover from that to win was phenomenal. He even won a point from on his knees -
The final was on a People's Monday; the atmosphere was like a football match inside. The first point drew a cheer more like winning a set. And Goran's interview afterwards where he talked about good Goran and bad Goran was great too.
That tournament will never be beaten for entertainment, I think.0 -

When Goran Ivanisevic won, he dedicated the title to a friend of his who was killed in a car accident in 1993, basketballer Drazen Petrovic. Lovely touch.

Danoli and Tom Foley are one of my favourite irish sporting stories, there was something special about the small Irish trainer with the gentle kind manner taking on the established yards and beating them.
The public took this horse to their hearts in a huge way , out of all the great days none were greater for me than the Sun Alliance in Cheltenham 1994
What an atmosphere and what a roar when he crossed the line a winner, I love this quote from a racing post writer at the time
"They cheered him down to the start," wrote George Ennor in the Racing Post, "they cheered him as he started, they cheered more loudly as he took the lead, and they raised the roof as he passed the post in front."
Bookies were literally cleaned out that day and I really think it was a magnificent training performance by Foley

Don't believe everything google or wiki tells you.
That is definitely a Liverpool 1983 jersey and man united wore black shorts and white shirts in the final.
Also one of guys looks like Daglish and the other with tache looks like Souness.
And goalie looks like Bailey.
There is not a Villa jersey in sight.0
