Right, who's in Soll at the moment?! Snoozerface I know you're around somewhere!! Giant slalom on Friday at the Keat. It'll be good fun, and the after-party in the Salven is always great, loads of prizes. Come & say hello if you're around, I'll be the only girl with the Telemark team so easy spotted! See you there ;-)

Any recommendations for ways to get to Brixen im Thale from Munich airport?
Is it best to prebook the train or just buy tickets on arrival?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,230 ✭✭✭fannymagee

I always buy on arrival, it's no hassle. Go downstairs in the airport, follow the signs for the S Bahn & you'll find the ticket desk. They'll direct you from there. Have a great trip!! :-)

If there are a few of you, there are great group prices for the German portion of your trip. http://www.bahn.com/i/view/overseas/en/prices/germany/schoenes-wochenende-ticket.shtml
    Or http://www.bahn.com/i/view/DEU/en/prices/germany/laender-ticket.shtml

Thanks, I looked into that but I read that those tickets only apply on standard commuter trains and not on the ICE or IC trains. So I didn't want to chance it, nor do I want to take the long way there for the sake of a few quid.
Was more worrying about whether not buying a ticket now would mean we could end up without a place on the train. I noticed though some train times give a warning about being quite full, and recommending to book. The times we're likely to travel seem to be fine. The best train for us is only 30 mins after landing, so I don't want to get ticket in case we miss it (most likely we will). Otherwise, we'll catch the next one after it.

How far is it to walk from terminal 1 Munich to the S-bahn?

Any ideas of cost of taxi from Worgl to Brixen?

The S-bahn station is downstairs in the terminal,it takes no time at all to get there. Its well signposted. Theres a manned ticket desk at the entrance, it may well be possible, even probable to get on the train within 30 minutes.

There aren't many ICE/IC trains to Kufstein/Wörgl from Munich, about 1 or 2 a day I think? The regional trains to Kufstein are about 13 mins longer than the IC/ICE.

The S-bahn is right under terminal 1.

We were quoted €6.50pp from Wörgl to Westendorf in a taxi.

So the OH came home yesterday absolutely beaming about a private lesson he'd had with an Irish guy (from Kilkenny?!) yesterday morning, which only happened because of a mix-up in the bookings. I couldn't help wondering if it was anyone from on here, lol! Whoever it was, I hope they enjoyed their 2 hours half as much as he did ;-)

had great trip to SkiWelt. A nice region for intermediate skiing and restaurants much better priced than France/Switzerland.
Not as snowy as we thought it would be. High up was ok, but we missed having the home run at the end of the day (south facing slope). Unfortunately it seems this year they had a lot less snow than before.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,230 ✭✭✭fannymagee

Ah that's good to hear Gatica- glad you enjoyed!! You were in Brixen, right? The south facing aspect is a bummer in warmer weather alright- I sometimes wonder about the location of the AlpenIglu, lol!! ;-)

Gatica, Its no. 33 Kummereralm on the piste map on skiwelt.at. The gluwein in there is also very good, nicely spiced, not too sweet.

We did find this place, took a wrong turn off the red slope first time, but found it ok the second time around. Really lovely place, the staff very friendly and portions very generous (I had to have the kid's size meals :) )
I think they may do specials on different days as there wasn't any brandy custard when we were there :( Still worth a visit though!

Its a bit of fun in the evening to log in to this site and see the icon travelling around the piste map tracking the lifts you've been on. Enjoy. Feel free to ask any questions..

Is there a website where you can see where you ski-pass was used?

Yes, we were in Brixen. Very quiet town, especially in the evenings. I think it's more of a "local" tourist area as we didn't hear much English until we got the other side of the mountains.
We could ski down from the Choralm side but not from Hochbrixen unfortunately. I'm amazed all that snow help up in plus degree weather!

Everyone's welcome, all levels of skier (as long as you feel competent that you can do it!!), and skiers, boarders, bladers, telemarkers, monoskis- whatever you want to strap to your feet ;-)

Aaand if you faceplant- you've at least seen evidence here that you weren't the first ;-)

That's not a stupid question!! Yes there are 2 large supermarkets and they do a range of milks- I don't drink coffee but I'm pretty sure you can get a Soy Latte in the some of the coffee shops too ;-)

No problem! I'd say you'll be grand food wise so- it's a lot of carbohydrate heavy food but not necessarily wheat or milk- in fact they don't use much milk at all over there! :-)

I know a bunch of people going, but can't go myself this year.
FM, out of curiosity, just how unusual is this year for snow/weather in Ski Welt ? I keep seeing online that northern Austria is having a really bad year, warm temps & 40% down on snow. I know the pistes are open alright, but there seems to be a lot of green on the webcams - is it usually like this or is this year a bit of a one off ? Just a little curious and with half an eye on next year - I'm using the logic that it can't be this warm two years in a row :) !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,230 ✭✭✭fannymagee

No it's not usually like this Russman- this is a particularly bad year! The start of season was fantastic, but then it just didn't keep up. The OH reckons this is maybe the second season like this in 20 years, I've not experienced a season like this in the past 7 or so years... The one thing that has shone through this season is just how well they are able to maintain the pistes, even in this warm weather. Most of Soll's slopes are north facing, so it's better protected from the sun than the Brixen side- that's where the really green pics are from. The main thing is, throughout the whole season to date, all the Soll slopes have been open and well skiable, and kept in really great shape. It's the off-piste that was hit worst.

Last season was fantastic, we were still skiing well past Easter so hopefully next year is back to normal!! :-)

Thanks for that. Yeah, I was hoping its an unusual one, rather than a regular occurrence. I was with the tag trip in Westendorf in 2012 and there was literally feet of snow in the village and temps were double digits below zero for the full week, so was curious as to which was more "normal" !

Oh my God sorry, you were in the MILL!! Ah the Dubliner is the REAL Irish bar, it's in the back of the Red Horse, it's run by Sean & Sinead, they're a very sound brother & sister from Meath ;-)

I presume you've been in the SalvenStadl for après? It's great fun in there, I find the Mill pretty soulless tbh ;)

The Chickenplace is the Stocklalm, the big restaurant beside all the lifts in the bowl at the Middlestation. It does a REALLY tasty rotisserie chicken at lunchtime- get there early though!!

The little bar halfway down the blue family run also does the best schnitzel around- its really tasty. Definitely try that too!!

What level of skischool are you doing? :)

Haha no worries! Nursery! Didn't even know how put skis on yesterday!! Moving up the mountain tomorrow. I'm loving it! I'm actually addicted to skiing!
We ended up doing a bit of a pub crawl yesterday but didn't make the Dubliner, must try there tomorrow!

We passed Brixen last weekend on the train and it nearly brought tears to my eyes. It would have if I was staying in Brixen anyway. The south facing slopes were decimated. It looked more like early April than the middle of February - green slopes everywhere.

We were in Kitzbuhel with North-ish facing slopes and it was "fine" but not what you would expect for this time of year. The opposite slope (Ki-West) looked pretty barren, but at least it had some snow. It snowed a couple of days and the slopes were topped up, but the temperatures were sufficiently high that the new snow didn't have much of an impact 36 hours later.

On the plus side it meant that the slopes were really quiet. Given that it was mid-term for the usual suspects the queues were tiny. We didn't have to wait more than 2 or 3 minutes (like 40 or 50 people constantly moving) at the bottom of the Hahnenkanm. The maximum anywhere, on any day might have been 8 or 10 minutes.

This is the really good thing about Soll- most of the slopes are north facing. When you stand at the top of the Hohe Salve & look over towards Brixen/Westendorf it can look completely green, except for the white ribbon down to Brixen- it's been a really bad year conditions-wise, but particularly for that side of the mountain.

Moving_home that's the other reason I was asking- you wouldn't have passed the Chicken Place yet if you;re down on the nursery slopes, but you probably will tomorrow! Who's your instructor?! Tell them you've a special request lol ;-)

You'll be skiing the Salvenmoos tomorrow so- it's a lovely slope. I have a friend who never bothered to progress beyond it- it has a nice bar at the top that you can sit outside & watch the world go by, and then the chicken place at the bottom, so she reckons she wants nothing more, lol!! (I have twisted her arm a bit since though, lol)

Just wanted to update this thread. We had an amazing week in Soll! Just home and wrecked! Last Saturday none of us knew anything about skiing and hadn't a breeze. By the end of the week we had skied 3 red slopes! An amazing achievement for us and when I first saw these slopes last weekend I thought I would never be able to do it, never mind on this trip. We attended 5 days of ski school and had an amazing instructor. We didn't miss any time which probably helped.

Soll is a beautiful quaint town with just the right level of après ski and some fabulous restaurants.

Slaven Stadl is the best pub for après ski but is generally dead by 8pm.
We spent most of the week in the Whiskey Muehle and the Underground. We were in the Dubliner a couple of times but it was dead (this could have been bad timing on our part).

Restaurant wise - our group's favourite was Auf de Muehle. It was a little pricey but steaks were amazing.
Rossini's and Bella Vita also went down well.
Dorf Stub'N and Postwirt had mixed reviews from our gang.
The chicken place on the slopes for lunch was amazing!!
