Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

not a regular poster here, but thought ye might enjoy a few pics from recent holidays in Portugal. Obligatory tram pic from Lisbon - apparently these are 1930s carriages which were mechanically upgraded in the 90s..

The heavy rail stock on the Cascais line were built between 1952-1956 for 1500v dc and modernised in the 90s or noughties.

The trams were built before the first world war, possibly by Brill. They used be accompanied by some ugly vehicles from the 1930s and 50s.
These heritage trams were totally modernised from a mechanical point of view, for example they have a pantograph instead of the traditional trolley. They also have a modern comfortable drivers cab, in marked contrast to the hellish old ones. I could never understand how drivers continued year after year without major orthopaedic problems due to the grotesque posture needed to drive them.

    Hi all,

Got a few pics to share of the ongoing Pearse station roof replacement - it's starting to take shape and the segment of new roof offers a nice glimpse of what is to come :)

As anyone who ever used Pearse before knows, the current roof makes the whole station a dreary, depressing kip. A place that you barely tolerate having to wait in for your train. Some places are just so dark by design, that no matter how well lit it is, it's just a soul-suckingly unpleasant place to have to be - and Pearse with its current roof definitely is one such place.

But the roof replacement is proceeding South to North, and from what I can see the new roof is going to be brighter and all around nicer. Now, I'm not normally a fan of mixing old and new architectural styles, like that bizarre glass pyramid at the Louvre in Paris, but IMHO Pearse was never anything particularly special but the new roof is just nice.

I'm attaching one or two pictures of Pearse mid-station - note that the lighting there is so bad that the phone camera either over or under exposed in terms of white balance. There will also be some pics of the new roof. There are only a few metres of it in place as of yet, so that's just enough to preview the roof, not how the station will look under it, but it does bode well. A credit to those involved.

The Belmond train passed through Enniscorthy again this afternoon, but I was liquored-up after watching the rugby and as usual had to rely on my friend Eamonn to do the business.

Lest there be any confusion, Eamonn is not Del.Monte. :D

    Afternoon folks,

The latest batch of pictures from this weekend have now been uploaded to the August gallery which features one of the biggest changes to the operation of Limerick Jct. since 1967 and probably since the opening of the station in 1848, the new Down Platform at the station opened to traffic on Sunday 25th August 2019.

    Saturday 24th August 2019:
Today I was out between Templemore and Thurles to photograph the Belmond Grand Hibernian heading to Cork.

    Sunday 25th August 2019:
Arguably the biggest change to Limerick Jct. since the 1967 alterations which allowed trains from Dublin direct access to platform 1, plus the direct curve to Limerick City occurred today with the opening of the new Platform 4 on the Down Line. The opening of this platform for Cork and Tralee bound trains allows a faster approach to the station instead of negotiating crossovers ranging from 15mph to 40mph to access the Up Platform as before.

A minor timetable change was introduced from today to take into account the opening of the new platform with trains operating up to 3 minutes faster south of Limerick Jct. than before. A future timetable should allow Up and Down trains to call at Limerick Jct. at the same time.

All Down Road services to Cork and Tralee will serve the new platform every day EXCEPT the following weekday services which will continue to serve Platform 1 (Up Platform)
    07.00 Heuston - Cork,
    21.00 Heuston - Cork.

Additionally and in a welcome move the 1500 Heuston - Cork (weekdays) will now call at Limerick Jct. with a connection to Limerick available. This plugs a 90 minute gap in the schedule from Dublin to Limerick.

Other photos from today come from Grange Level Crossing on the Thurles side of Limerick Jct.

@The_Wanderer: apologies if “requests” aren’t something you do, but I am very intrigued as to what the reverse side of Platform 4 at Limerick Junction looks like with a view to what additional options there might be were a “Platform 5” constructed, and what sidings and so on remain post-construction. Google Maps only shows so much :)

Sorry Dowlingm, I've been away so only seeing this now.

Options for a platform 5 couldn't be easily incorporated into the new platform without widening it. This is due to the position of the footbridge "fouling" any easy laying of track for a platform 5 alongside the new platform 4.

See https://thewandererphotos.smugmug.com/2019-Photos/August-2019/i-8W8CJww to illustrate the point.

    Evening folks,

Two updates to the website tonight with updates to the October gallery and the Bord na Mona gallery.

October gallery: I had to go to Galway today, so I decided to drive to Athlone and let the train take the strain for the rest of the way. Pictures come from Athlone and Galway and also shows the track layout changes which are happening in the yard. While on the way back to Athlone I copped 073 at Ballinasloe on a HOBS train so decided to head home via the scenic route to get a picture of it.

    Click https://bit.ly/318xC2i to view.

While on the way home from Ballinasloe to Nenagh, a friend and a Bord na Mona expert rang me by chance for a quick chat. I mentioned that I would be passing Shannonbridge shortly. He informed me that it was a good time to be passing as the evening shift would start at 1700 and would see several trains heading out to the bogs on either side of the Power Station. So it would have been rude not to stop. After staking out the underbridge on the R357 road for 15 minutes the action begin with two trains heading out to the bogs. I decided to relocate to Blackwater Works a few miles away and caught up with the first two trains passing me once again. But that wasn't the end of it, a total of four trains were following the first pair in close succession. A great 40 minutes of railfreight action in the heart of Ireland.

I'll start off today's picture update with, sometimes things work out in your favour when you least expect it.

With loco 225 allocated to the 0800 Heuston - Cork, it would mean I would pass it mid section Ballybrophy - Portlaoise on the 0740 Limerick - Heuston. For those not in the know, this locomotive only returned to traffic last month working freight services after being stored since September 2010 after suffering damage in a collision with a tractor at a user worked level crossing near Roscommon.

However, luck was on my side. Due to adverse weather conditions the 0630 Limerick - Ballybrophy was 20 minutes late arriving into Ballybrophy and the connecting service wasn't held. Passengers would be carried to Dublin on the 0913 Portlaoise - Heuston, which started back from Ballybrophy. Thankfully the 0800 Heuston - Cork was also running 14 minutes late and the empty set to collect the passengers in Ballybrophy was behind the 0800 Heuston - Cork service, which meant I was able to photograph 225 passing Ballybrophy.

Later in the day we saw 086 heading L.E. from Mallow to Portlaoise and 228 worked the 1100 Heuston - Cork. Finally later that evening while passing Birdhill I called into the station to see the 1905 Ballybrophy - Limerick which was the last passenger service between Ballybrophy - Birdhill for a number of weeks as the line is closed for track relaying.

Interesting, are they doing the whole section. Do.you know if its upgrading or just maintenance work been carried? Is there likely to line speed improvements as a result of this?

They are doing work around the 5MP this weekend relaying about 3/4 mile. Not sure what else is planned yet. I don't think there would be line speed improvements until the whole route is eventually done (when will that be is the question?) and elimination of user worked level crossings to allow a line speed increase. In a perfect world you should be able to do Limerick - Ballybrophy in about 60 - 70 minutes. We can keep dreaming....

    Saturday 9th November 2019:
The Nenagh Branch is currently closed between Ballybrophy and Birdhill for relaying work to be carried out. The first section to be done is in the Ballybrophy - Roscrea section between the 4 1/2 MP to 5 1/4 MP around Quakers Road Level Crossing. I visited the area today to see the progress so far on the first day of the closure.

A months closure would suggest a fair bit of work been carried out. What is the line speed, 40?? I know it's as low as 30 in some sections. Presumably they are replacing jointed track for CWR but even with crossings you'd expect to be seen a min of 50mph on CWR. Guess we'll have to wait and see.
