    Morning all,

Northern Ireland Railways owned (8)209 has been released from Inchicore works following completion of its cab modifications. The opportunity was also taken to finish repainting it in the full Enterprise livery. The locomotive is pictured at Deerpark, Portarlington with the 0700 Heuston - Cork earlier this morning.

    Evening all,

Some more shots from this evening at Carn Bridge and the Barrow Viaduct at Monasterevin, includes a better view of 209.

If you had issues accessing the website earlier I do apologise for that. The problem took longer to resolve than planned. All should be ok now.

Sitting on the 7:10 cork Dublin in cork and just to let ye know its 234 doing the heavy lifting and didn't see the DVT number. Also the carriage I'm in the carpet in in bits. It looks like someone dragged something covered in mud through it.

    Evening all,

    Sunday 5th July 2015:
Killarney was the setting for the Munster Football Final between Kerry & Cork today. For the occasion there was a Spl. from Tralee and a Spl. from Cork, plus the regular services. The pattern of services to Killarney before the match was:
    0855 Cork - Tralee (4ICR 22012).
    0955 Cork - Killarney Spl. (3ICR 22051).
    1055 Tralee - Killarney Spl. (5ICR 22031).
    0830 Heuston - Tralee (2X3ICR 22049 + 22005).
    1150 Tralee - Heuston (4ICR 22012).
All services were heavily loaded and the 0830 ex Heuston was increased from 5ICR to 2X3ICR on this day.

Any idea why the stored wagons were moved? More wagons for the MRP Biomas liner or just to get them out of Ballina?

They have been there for many years now

I was wondering where the stored rake of LP wagons that used to be on the second IWT liner went to a few years back. Didn't think they were in Ballina with the lack of space there as it is.

The stored LPs at Kilarney still have the old ridemaster type bogies installed. I don't think they can be move until they are changed.

    What second rake?

The additional IWTs were worked by the set off the DFDS liners rake on Wednesdays and Thursdays and still are.

In 2010 there was a LX and an LP rake for the IWTs. Then the LP rake went and a second LX rake showed up since then. The CPWs went to the DFDS runs.

I haven't seen an operational rake of LPs in years except for the spoil wagons. I figure they converted more LPs into spoils.

IWT never used LP wagons, one set of LXs only was initially used, then 1 set of LXs and 1 set of CPWs (following a trial of mixed CPW/LX trains when 2xCPWs replaces 3xLXs), now two LXs for the IWT, the second IWT LX rake was previously a DFDS rake.

IWT got the DFDS rake when the DFDSs initially ceased leaving the CPWs in storage and when DFDS returned they got the ex IWT CPWs.

There are currently 4 operational liner rakes in use, the CPWs for the DFDS, 2 x LX rakes for IWT and another LX rake shared between DFDS and IWT.

So when DFDS were operating out of Dublin port up to about 2010 before moving they had a rake of LPs allocated to them?

There is shots of the LP rake in Northwall in this thread in the 2010 timeframe long after the 2x CPW +LX rake trails while they were putting the bogies back on the rest of the CPWs.

DFDS never operated from Dublin, just Waterford/Ballina, LPs never used on IWTs, 18 LPs transferred from Dundalk to North Wall in November 2009 (ex Guinness set) so I'm guessing that's what your thinking of.

The CPWs never had their bogies removed either.

Large amounts of LPs (and LYs) are currently stored in Mallow, Mallow BFS and Tralee, with the odd wagon also at North Wall, Inchicore, Limerick, Cork, Portlaoise and Castlemungret.

Here is an LP on the IWT in 2012, yes there is an LX next it alright. But there was a full LP rake on the IWT at one stage along with an LX rake.

I stand corrected, LPs were never meant to be used on the IWTs, perhaps the odd wagon appeared on maintenance rotation, but I'm certain that full LP rakes were never used as the sets we have in use today havn't really changed over the years except for maintenance swap outs.

I think h.gricer or the wanderer are the ones to put this to bed!

I made enquiries with a friend within IEs freight department who said that initially 3 LPs were used with more to follow to supplement the IWTs LXs due to a shortage of specially refurbished LXs at the start and a small number of LPs are still in use on both the IWT and DFDS sets but no full LP set was used he said. LXs are the preferred choice due to been able to handle 45ft containers.

I suspect the reason is that the wagons in use on the IWT require special spark proof brake blocks and spark guards and not enough LXs had them in time.

A common mistake people seem to make is calling these ridemaster bogies and something which seems to have stuck aswell, few people may realise that there is actually no such type of bogie!

They are ride-control bogies which somehow became to be understood to be ridemaster, for anyone interested they are officially know as D&L C72 bogies.

There is also no problems with using them today and no need to replace them either as like anything as long as they are maintained in good working order they will be fine, however due to their design they require a stricter maintenance schedule and must be in top condition to ensure safe use as they are prone to ultrasonic cracks, the newer S&M Y33 bogies used on the LXs etc. are a better bogie but not necessarily the only type useable.

Erm as for LP's and LX's I'm no expert! Ask me about carriages, locos, DMU's and EMU's no problem. But the different type of freight wagons always stumped me!

    Good morning all!

    Two updates this morning:

    Thursday 9th July 2015:
076 failed near Cherryville Jct. whie working the 1330 North Wall - Ballina IWT Liner causing serious disruption to the evening peak service to and from Heuston Station. Some pictures from Portarlington.

Great to see IE look after passengers before train faults.......why did they not allow 231 to haul to the loop and carry out the work. This rubbish of fixing on the spot needs to stop, NTA should issue major fines until they get the message as it usually take IE to feel it in pockets before they make any movement on things.

Fixing on the spot? What exactly do you mean? An assisting loco was been arranged from Inchicore, but in the mean time 076 got going again.

Using 231 would not have been as simple as you may think!

Not sure if the NTA have the power to issue fines.
