Fixing on the spot? What exactly do you mean? An assisting loco was been arranged from Inchicore, but in the mean time 076 got going again.

Using 231 would not have been as simple as you may think!

Not sure if the NTA have the power to issue fines.

Assistance was arranged but took to long. There is no excuses it should of been cleared a lot faster. A lot more problems were caused than necessary and it's just a repeat problem and there seem's to be no improvement in rescue dispatch times.

Can I ask what the problem with 231 would be?
    Was single line running considered?

As for the NTA, if they had the power they wouldn't be bothered implementing such measures, IE rule them not the other way round.

In the UK this would cost a fortune to operators, IE will give 1 service 100% refunds and a few others 50% and a few cups of coffee.

It's the exact same with regular train failures, sit until the problem is fixed.

Getting an assisting loco isn't as easy or as quick as you may think or as we would like, first of all there needs to be a loco actually available and ready to go, there may be some in Inchicore that are running or in between exams etc and can't just be taken, then you need a driver to be available which isn't always the case, then when all that is done you need to try and get the assisting loco to the failed train inbetween all the already backed up trains, not as simple as we would hope for I suppose.

Using 231 wouldn't be that simple because there would be no driver near it, if/when you got a driver to it then the driver would need to start up the loco and prepare it for service which takes time, then you need someone competent to unhook 231 from the spoil wagons, so you see it isn't as simple as you may think, and the final problem with 231 is it's due to go to Inchicore over the weekend for re-fuelling as it's very low. Obviously the last point is the least of the problems as if you did overcome the first issues it would do to clear 076 to Portarlington.

Indeed it should have been cleared a lot faster but that's not always the case, but I seriously doubt very much that IE would purposely drag their heels waiting to clear it-clearing a failure becomes a priority and is done as quickly as possible, and similar issues do arise in the UK also.

I don't understand why you think IE run the NTA, it's quite the opposite, IE can't do much these days without the NTAs approval.

Today we headed to the Scottish Highlands by train and bus.

First of all we headed north to Oban on the 0821 Glasgow Queen Street - Oban / Mallaig. After a short break at Oban we caught the 918 bus to Fort William at 1240, a quick change of bus at Fort William onto the 919 brought us onto Inverness where we will be staying for the next two nights.

    Morning folks,

The latest update to my UK travels is from Tuesday. It was a simple out and back from Inverness. We caught the 0702 train from Inverness to Thurso (a mere 154 miles away) before catching a bus to John O'Groats. After a short break there we caught a 2nd bus to Wick before starting the long trek back to Inverness on the 1600 ex Wick. This is the last train from the town each day.

    Continuing my UK trip.

On Wednesday, we left Inverness and headed along the scenic railway line to Kyle of Lochalsh. At Kyle we boarded a West Coast Motors (Citylink) bus from there to Portree on the Isle of Skye where we had a break for two hours to explore the town. Later in the afternoon we caught a Stagecoach Local Bus from Portree to Armadale to connect into the 1720 hrs sailing to Mallaig. From Mallaig the next stop was Fort William for a quick change onto the Caledonian Sleeper to London.

    Afternoon all,

Pictures from yesterdays Irish Railway Record Society Special from Dublin Connolly to Ballina and Westport has now been uploaded to http://smu.gs/1HCBsT6

3 x 071 Class Locomotives were used during the day with 087 hauling the train from Connolly to Ballina, 078 from Ballina to Claremorris and Westport where it promptly failed with a forward / reverser fault. 084 came to the rescue and hauled the locomotive off the train prior to working the tour back to Connolly.

As always an enjoyable day out, despite the miserable weather conditions west of the River Shannon.

Full Credit must go to the IRRS Program Officer Shane Roberts for organising another successful tour and if the questionnaire handed out about options for the 2016 tour comes to fruition then that tour promises to be a cracker of a weekend.

Also we cannot forget the RPSI and IE staff involved in the operation of the tour and to making it such a great day out.

Also the last of my images from the recent UK trip have been uploaded which has pictures from around London on Friday, plus the flight back to Dublin. Click http://smu.gs/1HCBOJn to view. Not really though as the 141 is dead, the 071 it hauling the the train.

There is a great video up on youtube of a 141 hauling a dead 071 on a Mk3 set out of Claremorris with great sounds coming from the 141 as it lifts the train out of the station.

I agree. Completely unsuitable for such a long journey. Wonder what the journey time ended up being? At least IE did not make all the passengers wait till the next service. Should be sort of some compensation offered... Sorry for taking photo thread off topic!

It was probably the most on time Intercity service of the evening, another wonderful and speedy performance by IE yesterday afternoon just a casual 3 ish hours to clear a broken down train
