Audio is shocking and at times I think I'm playing a ps2 game, the story itself though and the characters are decent, 2k really are a shower of ****e hawks, makes we worried about Mafia 1 remake.

Downloaded the free update of Mafia 3 to definitive and now the game tells me my specs are too low (they're not) and the game runs with lowest quality textures and janky as hell. Unplayable.

Seems to have happened all PC users judging by Steam and no sign of a fix. Laughable really, I gave up around 15 hours in last time and thought i'd give it another chance but doubt i'll go back to it now and haven't got high hopes for Mafia 1.

I've heard they made a balls of Mafia 3 alright as if the game wasn't bad enough.

I'm on chapter 10 in Mafia 2, Jesus what a brilliant game, completely hooked on it. Would easily sit down and finish it in one setting if I had enough time. Craving to watch some Goodfellas/Sopranos when I'm done.

Did you get Mafia 2 on PC? Wouldn't mind giving it a go but put off now by the issues with 3.

On PS4. I heard if you have it on PC, mods do a better job than the remaster so not sure but on PS4, it's way better than the PS3 version on PS NOW. It has some audio issues and laggy in certain scenes, bit of a shabby 'remaster' but I'm having a ton of fun with it.

Was wondering that, ps4 v psnow, good to know thanks.

Is it worth waiting to play mafia 1 first tho? Never played any mafia game before.

Not a huge difference, ps4 definitely looks nicer though. If you have a free trial for ps now, I'd definitely suggest trying it. There is one mission in 2 that links to the ending of 1 but i can't remember if they mention names so you might not even know it if you play it. Other than that, loading screens contain lore and some mention what the main character did in 1 so I'd avoid reading those if you do play it.

Mafia 1 is such a brilliant story, absolutely recommend it when it comes out (unless the remake team make an absolute Bollox of it).

Did mission 14 earlier and the first shootout is tough but there's a glitch where by if you drive the car into the water the warehouse door will be closed, climb the stairs and it makes everything so much easier.

Mafia 4 is rumoured to be open world Vegas Mob where you build a casino and take over businesses and run rackets while building your empire. If true, it should be the closest thing we get.

It's made by a team that promised the world and failed to deliver with mafia 2 and spectacularly failed to deliver with the third game. I'd wait for reviews!

I know man but but when it comes to Mafia games, i can't withhold my hype. Definitely skeptical after 3 so i shouldn't be as disappointed as i was with that. Expectations definitely lowered but the premise is at least back on track. The best bits of Mafia 3 were in dlc. Start a grow house and manage weed selling operation, rebuild your bar, get it up and running, add to it, etc and a cult investigation dlc which was very interesting.

The only problem with 3 were the missions, and the repetativness. It looks amazing, plays really well, but the repetition got old quick. If they can keep the same visual quality (or better) and improve what you're actually doing, it would be a great game. I've wanted a decent follow up to Vice City with the empire building in this style, so I look forward to it.

PS4 Pro shouldn't be struggling with frame rates where other consoles aren't. No Reason a Pro shouldn't be hitting solid 30 frames on a remaster. I'd rather a 1080p60 setting over higher resolution.

I'd love a remake of Vice City with upgraded graphics and slightly updated gameplay, but with all the old music.

Yeah, makes zero sense. They should have just kept working on them and released them all on 31st of august or whenever 1 releases.

Just finished it there, good game but some minor annoyances ruin it like the check point system, also I'd say they did **** all to it polish wise, the game looks horrendous parts.

Managed to get Mafia 3 working OK but lost interest in it quite quickly. Picked up Mafia 2 to get my mafia set gaming fix as we wait for Empire of Sin. I'm enjoying it much more than 3 I have to say even though its showing its age. The graphics are pretty terrible even with the lick of a paint they've been given and the cutscenes are buggy. I kind of like that its just missions one after the other without a real open world element. The missions are kind of samey but there have been a few interesting ones as well, selling the cigarettes, burying the body a couple of stand out ones. I'm only on chapter 9 i think but well finish it off later this week I think. For the €23 I paid for it its fine but i'd have been annoyed if i paid any more for it.

Will give 3 another try once i'm finished as i heard the DLC is good but can't see myself finishing it anytime soon.

I finished off Mafia 2. Never completed it on its initial release and being honest its not a very good game, at best a 5/10 for me. I enjoyed parts of the story but felt fans of the series completely overhyped it. I mean its fine but its basically as cliched a mob story as you can find, Joe as Sonny, Vito as Michael. The missions are all a bit too samey such that when a different type comes up its a treat even if its not actually that good a mission.

I tried the DLC but hated it and was done with the drive here, shoot this missions at that stage anyway so maybe in a few months i'll go back to it. I'd like to give Mafia DE a go when it comes out but i'll be holding off for reviews.

At around 14 minutes the narrator says there is more than 20 missions in all. Is that a pretty low number for an open world game or is it just me?

It's not an open world game by today's standards though. It's got an open world, but you follow a fairly linear narrative. Assuming it's anything like the original.

It's a fantastic narrative though, so no collectables is just fine with me.

I don't remember that particular mission from the original Mafia, must dig out a video to compare and contrast the approach. I vaguely remember a visit to the countryside (which ATM blew my mind that an open world could be both urban AND rural - crazy stuff! :D ), but I'd thought that was in the day-time & only to some random diner...

Quality over quantity, the story is fantastic, doesn't overstay it's welcome so it's nice they aren't neddlessly filling it out.

I CANNOT wait to play the hotel mission again, absolutely fantastic where it ends up and links back to a mission you did previously, such great writing.

It baffles me that people would be saddened by no open world collectible guff. This stuff and pointless achievements needs to seriously **** right off.

I never lamented the lack of "collectibles", but more that Mafia had this huge world but absolutely nothing to do in it. Like, for all my excitement that this game had both rural and urban areas, the giddiness quickly died down when I realised for all the miles of country roads, there wasn't anything you could do along them. The systemic aspects weren't particularly deep so it wasn't like you could just make your own adventure either.

Mafia was a superficial Open World, but nowhere near functional one. It needn't have bothered with the ability to drive around at all TBH. Methinks this entire game started as one thing, but morphed into another - with the "open world" aspect a lingering aspect of an older build.

Yakuza games don't have a huge amount of collectibles, but there's something to do or people to meet on almost every street. Whereas for me one of the worst open worlds was L.A Noire because there was almost nothing to do in it except drive to the next objective. It felt like the open world was only there because the city and driving mechanics had to be implemented anyway due to chase sequences.

Agreed, loved Mafia 2's hybrid of open world with story driven. Not many side missions but that was perfect to me.

A game which did side activities well was Godfather 1 on the PS2. The raiding and territory system was fun.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

I think the conversation has been sullied a little by modern "open world" games - specifically the busywork simulators beloved of Ubisoft. A good open world game with a modicum of effort and precision curation is a wondrous experience; Ubisoft just ground the genre into the dirt with its copy/paste approach.

I'd never advocate for that kind of structure and ideally if a developer can't deliver on a certain mechanic it should just be dropped. As was tje case with Mafia's vast but empty map. Now, with a remaster like Mafia's, with its increased graphical fidelity (and potentially better AI systems), maybe the empty roads take on a different tone. It could be entertaining in of itself to amble around the world for its own sake, taking in the sights & the basic pleasure of journeying around.

One thing I remember about Mafia 2 is a lot of missions were stretched out by long driving sections across the map; it was even more noticeable than GTA IV for that flaw.

Yeah, they were definitely more stretched out than Mafia 1 but it has been a loooong time since i played it, possible rose tinted glasses on.

I hope they make this race hard as balls to keep it authentic to the original :)
