    A supporter of Palestine and leftist movements in Latin America, I can almost forgive him for running rings around England. Different class in that game, and the hand of God was just crap goalkeeping from Shilton (who's an arsehole).

    I don't ever recall Dunphy slagging off Maradona. I do remember him being scornful of Platini right the way through Euro 84 (which France won).

    At the end of France's first game against Denmark, which they won with a late Platini goal, he scoffed "If they're the best in Europe, I'm Jimmy Greaves"

    He defended himself in the Sunday Tribune (RIP) at the time by saying that although he couldn't deny Platini's "brilliance", that did not constitute "greatness" which he claimed was something altogether different. This was probably the start of the "good player not a great player" cliché that has stuck with Dunphy ever since.

    France's semi final against Portugal ended in a draw and went to extra time. "Now," said Dunphy triumphantly on RTE during the interval "If France are a great team, we'll find out in the next 30 minutes." Portugal duly went ahead in the first half of extra time, and we feared Dunphy might be proved right. But France scored two goals in the final 10 minutes, the last by Platini with seconds left, to progress to the final.

    Dunphy was FUMING in the post match analysis.

    Funny how well we old timers remember matches in the days before Youtube, or even video cassettes! :)

    RIP to the greatest I've ever seen ( albeit on telly).

    86 was the first real big tournament i watched and the second goal against England is the best ever.

    Diego Maradona is was one of the most important , one of the greatest footballers of the tv era . Football is a massive cultural movement and touches millions of people - more than any scripted speech from any politician

    The domestic misery has and can still be covered . Most of the homeless , you didn’t and wouldn’t give two ****s about had you past them on the street, and most of them are on the street because of their failures in life . We all saw the sob story about the homeless guy dying near Leinster House during Kenny’s reign - turned out that he had family and had offers of a home but didn’t take them

    By Monday, normal miserable stories about beggars etc will resume

    I remember the 86 World cup final.

    We were playing in the Feile finals in Ennis that weekend, stayed with Doora Barefield.

    After the final on Sunday, our bus stopped at a hotel on the Limerick road (I cant remember the name of it)
    and we watched the World Cup final there.

    Rip Diego .... True Legend.

    Maybe that's it. Anything I would have heard about it would have come from an Irish perspective, so there was probably considerable schaudenfraude about the goal and the Irish really enjoyed how much it irked the Brits.

    I think if you took a million football fans from all over the world and asked them what was their favorite goal from the last 50 years his second against England in 86 would win easily.

    Everything about that goal turned him from a mere mortal into a god like figure for many.

    Didn't he drag then to the final again in 1990

    He was still very influential if i recall in 94

    He must be the greatest world cup player of all time as well as the greatest player

    Yeah I am little bemused by the sudden George Best love fest. Absolutely zero comparison in my books. Knocking in 6 goals against the mighty Northampton in a 3rd Rd FA Cup game ain't doing it for me.

    We all know Shilton is a twat. I mean what self respecting goalie gets outjumped by someone who is 5'4. Terry Butcher is another bitter twat.

    TBF Peter Reid has always been fair in his comments. I have never heard any bitterness from him.

    Most of the English players have no issue with the game (Linekar, Barnes and Beardsley have all said "Fair ****s for getting away with it") nd moved on. Just Shilton and Butcher are the bitter twats.

    It must really burn Peter Shilton up inside everytime he's asked in an interview about the 'Hand of God' goal, and the 'great injustice' of it etc..., but then also in the same conversation will be asked about 'that' 2nd goal he conceded, which is considered one of the greatest goals in soccer.

    No one else really cares about that 'Hand of God' goal anymore other than the English, who just can't forget it... Probably the same way a lot of Irish fans won't forget Thierry Henry's handball, that cost us a chance at a penalty shootout to reach the World Cup, but 11 years 7 days 17 hours & 36 minutes on, we've largely dropped the resent we still hold for it!!.
    It happened all the time in football, and will probably continue to happen (with the exception of VAR).

    The really funny thing about we getting our comeuppance against the French when Henry handled the ball, was that many of the English were rather sympathetic to us .

    Bit like the Eurovision back in the day. We’d give them **** all points and Britain, often no matter how crap our entry was, were good for 3-12 points to us .lol

    But seriously though, England had a great team back then and their clubs were running rampant in Europe , even the Ipswich if this world . But their fans were scumbags when abroad and Maggie Thatcher , while a formidable Statesperson (And she transformed Blighty for good and bad ,but mostly good despite what labourites will say) , had her enemies in Europe . I don’t think it was just the Irish who took pleasure with Maradona’s antics
