Red Bull mechanics should get a big bonus at the end of the season.

Some job by Red Bull. Think Ted said it would usually take them 15 minutes to change a spark plug.

    It's a great looking circuit.

Unless you count their time as McLaren's works supplier or their previous incarnations as Tyrell or BAR (think it was gone by the time Honda went Works and certainly gone by Brawn). Mercedes Benz haven't qualified at Imola full stop.
Come to think of it, what about Stewart or Jaguar's performance here?

Given the amount of gravel they have been brushing away in the breaks, looks like we'll be on for a safety car or 2 tomorrow

Irvine qualified 7th in a Jaguar there in 2000. Rubens and Johnny Herbert qualified over 14th there in Stewarts too. Its so long ago though that it was just a stupid stat to mention - Red Bull were a very different operation in 2006 :pac:

Well done Bottas. How many corners do you give him before Lewis is ahead tomorrow?

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,623 ✭✭✭✭skipper_G

Bottas on pole, so when will Hamilton pass him tomorrow, at the start or in the pit stop phase?

As soon as DRS is activated.

Albon had a bit of a nightmare, but recovered to end up 6th for tomorrow which isn't the worst. Am I right in thinking he'll be starting on soft tyres while others around him are on medium? He has to get a good start (for a change tomorrow) to gain some places before his tyres go off, and his starts aren't really the best so we'll see what happens.

Bottas will be in 2nd by the end of the first lap, possibly even 3rd of Max gets a good start.

Hopeful we gets few safety cars tomorrow. Can see a few cars stuck in gravel in the last few corners.

The tyres were holding up well during Free practice this morning so I reckon we'll have a one-stopper race, with those on the mediums going until around lap 20-25 like last week, then going onto the hards. I also reckon the softs, which is the C4 compound will be able to last towards lap 15-20.

I am hoping the lack of track running will catch a few drivers out causing an upset/something to watch.

Why should it take an entire team of mechanics that long to change a spark plug? How long would they take to change a light bulb-a job entailing a similar level of complexity?

I was wondering too, seemed like an excessive amount of time with a sudden 66 percent reduction in time needed

Probably because of the amount of bodywork and engine bits that need removing to access it? Not like you can just pop the bonnet and have simple access

As soon as DRS is activated.

Nah, Hamilton will either get him on lap one or let him blow his tyres for 6 laps then get him.

I just presume there are procedures and checklists to comply with under normal circumstances. I’d bet they have to check every part they remover get to the spark plug, inspect it for damage and replace it if necessary. So they allow x minutes to change a spark plug and comply with all the precautions.

So under pressure the precautions go out the window and a spark plug change might actually take much less time than the scheduled time suggests

I’ve no idea what to make of that. Gasley is fastest on that list - a second faster than Hamilton.
If you take it as indicative then Gasley might be a good shout for a podium if any of the top three don’t finish.
