Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

@Mick, where did you pick up that Elmark transformer? Need to pick one up and if yours works I'll get the same!

Delighted to hear it's all working as it should! Thanks for all the updates!

Hi I actually ordered and used this in the end.

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/PSS10-Transformer-safety-230VAC-Mounting/dp/B01MDJWFB7/ref=sr_1_fkmr1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1522838061&sr=8-1-fkmr1&keywords=24v+bell+transformer+10VA

It was a bit more expensive but works perfect.
    Thanks,
    Mick

Quick question, for video doorbells like nest which are recoding continuously do you legally need a sign saying CCTV in operation?
    Thanks,
    Mick

I don’t think so as it is on private property but I stand to be corrected.

I don’t think so as it is on private property but I stand to be corrected.

    Domestic use of CCTV systems.
The processing of personal data kept by an individual and concerned solely with the management of his/her personal, family or household affairs or kept by an individual for recreational purposes is exempt from the provisions of the Acts. This exemption would generally apply to the use of CCTVs in a domestic environment. However, the exemption may not apply if the occupant works from home. [ Where the exemption does apply, a person who objects to the use of a CCTV system - for example, a neighbour who objects to images of her/his property being recorded - may be able to take a civil legal action based on the Constitutional and Common Law right to privacy.] It should be noted that recording of a public space, even partially, or when recording is directed outwards from the private setting, it may not be regarded as a ‘personal or household’ activity for the purposes of the Data Protection Acts, and this may have immediate and particular interest to drone operators and data controllers.

    How should that be interpreted?

The way I read it is that unless you use your home as a workspace, you are exempt from the data protection regulations. However, if you are recording public property (outside of your boundaries) it may be interpreted in a legal case that DPR does apply. Also, your neighbours may have a legitimate concern & reason to complain legally. #notalawyer.

To be honest, I think the law is out of date where these devices are concerned. Particularly ones that record all the time rather than motion or trigger activated ones

Anyone managed to purchase the nest aware service for this camera. I have a few cameras on an Irish account but it comes up with errors when I try to get a subscription for my nest doorbell.

    EDIT - SOLUTION

I tried again and added my revolut card. It took it then.

On 30 day trial.. I had assumed would pop onto subscription when it ends

Not automatically, you have to sign up for it. It does not come into play until the trial ends.

This is the transformer I used.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00K1CWEUG Replacing an 8V transformer. I installed the Nest connectors on the bell as per the instructions but had to mount them outside the bell.

I also set the bell up as an electronic bell with a 2 sec delay.

It works well with my old door bell, which was like this.

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0001NPZ0G

When I chedk on the phone app it gives the voltage as 23.1 Volts under the technical info at the bottom of the settings. The battery voltage is 4.08 Volts.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 338 ✭✭RunDMC

I managed to get mine working with the original transformer and all the original wiring. The settings area in the app says 8 volts, but it appears to be working just fine.

I got stung for the VAT which was inevitable, but An Post also charged a €10 processing fee, which is ridiculous.

Thanks I thought I noticed with my old transformer the bell lit up blue which meant it was getting enough power. I went ahead with a new transformer anyway. Do you mind me asking how much customs was? I was lucky enough to miss it.
    Cheers,

Mine seemed to work with the 8V however sometimes it dropped off the network. It is more solid with the 24V transformer.

It also dropped off the network sometimes after the bell was pressed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 338 ✭✭RunDMC

I have noticed that it drops off the network from time to time and the video can be glitchy when the doorbell rings, but I assumed that it could also be my phone. I have the transformer so I will fit it at the weekend. I was just a little worried about burning out the wires with the higher voltage.

You wont burn out the wires, the opposite in fact, the higher the voltage, the lower the current and it is current that causes heat as it passes through the cable.

I'm getting the house rewired as part of a larger job and want to get one of these as part of it.

So all I need to order is the Nest Hello itself and one of these and give it to the electrician and thats it, it'll work here fine?

I know as soon as I order, they'll release our regions one... :o

you also need the part of the doorbell that makes a noise.

i.e the bell or chime part.

Have you been able to add a nest aware subscription to it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,937 ✭✭✭dingding

Yes, I had to change to my revolut card and it let me add it.

When I go into the camera it now tells me that the subscription commences when the trail ends.

Like others have said, there is a delay between a ring on the bell and the phone notification / google home notification.

Not much of a delay for me. So your revolut card has a US address?

No an Irish address. Not sure how it worked ????

    Perhaps just a coincidence.

It took the payment in Euro so this was not the difference.

Lads is it possible to turn the old school chime off, and just have it notify via the phone app, and/or Google Home? Or better yet the Sonos?

I'd like to have the option to silence the doorbell, and it just be a vibrate on my phone when someone rings it.

You can turn the bell off in the webpage and the app.

You can also snooze alerts for up to 3 hours.

Best thing ever. It's brilliant security device. The fact it records all the time is great. Night mode is very good. Got a sneaky takeway the other night and muted alarm so kids wouldn't know. Nice feature. Face recognition is great to. I wouldn't bother with any other outdoor cam at our house as can see everything happening. Very happy so far. I don't use the talk feature much but it does work. Have annoyed the kids with it a few times.
    Thanks,
    Mick

Yes two mini homes. The chime rings immediately and I'd say a couple of seconds before Google home announces. I had to wait for trial to end yesterday and then added then nest aware subscription. Had to switch payment method between my saved cards for it to work. 30 euro for 5 day history as already have sub for indoor cam. Have to say the nest hello is used more. We don't have the indoor cam on when we home.

One thing to watch for is your broadband limit. I've unlimited virgin but it uploads a lot over a month.. Also a good router helps as a lot of traffic added to network

Sounds good, i have a 20GB allowance a day on the broadband but it just throttles back if the limit is hit until 12 at night then goes back to normal so shouldn't be a issue (hopefully!)
Look like i'll order on soon , sounds good.... thanks for the info :):)
is there any aspect of it that does not work as expected due to it being an American version / not currently released here? - Last question @ I promise !!

No issues, I changed the transformer to a 24V one.

    A great device.

Was onto nest earlier trying to sort something out (for two hours!!!) and during the call asked about the thermostat firmware update to use the sensors, the security system and the doorbell.

There’s no firmware set for release in Europe at all with no visibility on anything upcoming so the sensors will not work at all.

The security system is not slated for a European release due to various regulations here it doesn’t comply with.

The doorbell is due for release within eight weeks. They’re already in their distribution centre.

Thanks for that, the sensors are slated for a UK release at some point? I'm sure I saw some articles on uk tech sites about them. I have three under my bed still in the box. Ive seen reference to updating the firmware manually from a PC. I wonder would they give an updated version directly? The UK site, which is probably just a copy of the US site says there's a version of firmware released in April. I'd be happy enough for them to update before the winter. If I was to choose between the nest indoor iq cam and nest hello I'd pick the hello every time. Probably depends on your house size but covers compete field of view from front of our house.
    Thanks,
    Mick

I want to get the sensors myself as our thermo was placed in one of the warmest spots in the house for some reason (wasn’t there that day). I’ll be eagerly awaiting the firmware & release.

I’m after the hello. Currently have the ring but want to get the whole nest setup especially as the subscription will be more or less the same price. Just hope I don’t have to get any re-wiring done.

Your pms are full :) yes mine is on front wall of house. I was worried if on doorframe wall would obscure camera. Electrician drilled hole at angle and ran new wires, joined and filled hole.. Think pics earlier in thread

With all this talk of new data protection regulations in the form of GDPR. Are there any implications for video doorbells which in many cases would cover public spaces?

Think I'll prefer the integration with Google Home and Chromecast/Android TVs over the Ring doorbell Pro.

As per earlier posts. If you have an existing wired doorbell and chime then you are half way there. You will likely need to upgrade your transformer to 24 volts. Most are 8 or 12. All details in the thread. I got an electrician to wire mine.
    Thanks,
    Mick

It was very simple to install for me, I had space in the chime-box for the chime connecter, and (barely) enough wire at the button to connect it. The only mod I had to make was to file a slot in the back of the angle plate to accomodate the fact that my wares come in from the side, not from the back. It still looks good though and capture my whole driveway.

There are no nest Pro installers I could find who knew anything about the doorbell in Dublin. An electrician should be able to fit easily though.

You can adjust the picture on the app and change the default zoom level. I would look at zooming in a bit and removing the wall on the RHS. My set up is very similar.
