Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

In answer to your question, I can add all the APN's I want however in the background they can still choose different ones without me knowing. Your assumption is that if you have selected an APN that's the one that's always used, however, that's not true if you tether the phone I believe. At least for some people.

First I've heard of a carrier remotely controlling for APN. Do you have a Vodafone branded device, therefore the APNs are set in system?

It's a Vodafone smart ultra 6 and was purchased from Tesco. The APN options are disabled. I've set the radio button to live. However, I've heard from various threads you can find on boards if you search for hs.vodafone that people who tether have been automatically put on hs.vodafone. In fact, it may be mentioned in this thread I believe.

It's only when people tether though and I think they don't want you doing that anyway so that may be the reason.

When you are in the menu to select which apn you want to use, enter the HS.vodafone.com apn as if to edit it, press the 3 dots up the top right and select delete apn. Are you saying this is blocked for you? It wasn't for me when I had one last year.

I think that's an issue directly related to the Smart 6 which is a Vodafone handset. Read about that issue elsewhere.. Try the Vodafone forums.

It's not that they're remotely controlling the apn on your phone when you tether.

Is that they are routing tethered traffic via HS for some despite the phones apn settings .. I'm one of those.

VF have not managed to sort this out yet for me anyhow.

Hey, I was with eir and moved over to Vodafone on Friday. My APNs have Tesco listed, and it's selected, I was never even with tesco mobile??

    Should I delete it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,575 ✭✭✭✭TheDriver

That's odd as Tesco is one 3 network, nothing to do with eir or vf. Was phone used by a Tesco customer at any stage?

No, never used by anyone else and never had a tesco sim card in.
Whats strange is Tescos is selected but obviously VF is the network the phones on and using for calls and data.
I also don't have the apn mentioned above.

I didn't have root but I had unlocked the phone and moved to other networks. Possibly it's the sim then not allowing deletion?

I currently have a smart ultra 6 and am wondering if anyone with this phone has gotten around this issue? I'm looking to move to vodafone and no tethering would be a big deal breaker.

Worst case scenario is you need to root it to remove the hs apn. Usually fairly straightforward with the su6. You can use this application to try root it.

Moved to Vodafone on Monday. Seems like there is no issues with the smart ultra 6 so far with tethering. Haven't been charged, can delete the HS apn and it hasn't come back yet. They also gave me 10 euro credit for registering which was nice.

Maybe it's from the live apn?

I'm not on this plan but get nearly 50mbit down (and tiny ping) with speed tests on vodafone in dublin with my iPhone 6.

Really really curious to see if you all get the same on this plan!

I agree, Vodafone's coverage is incomparable to any of the other networks. I have constant 4G in the countryside where on Three and Meteor I was lucky to be getting decent 3G and haven't seen 2G once since switching either which was also a constant pain of getting stuck on 2G with the other networks.

Overall it's pretty good for me. Dublin City center at busy times could be better (it can drop below 10Mbps), but it is still working significantly better that Three was.

One thing though: I don't know if it is being throttled but upload speeds never seem to reach the peak values I was getting with Three. Not a bit deal but strange given the fact that download speeds are much better.

    Most stable overall.

What happens when you stop monitoring download speeds?

I doubt that either, in clonfert pet farm just outside Maynooth and the usual no data issues.

Sorry I dont get you about speeds?

I used to monitor speeds until I switched to Vodafone and found I didn't have to anymore, I just get a fast and stable connection anywhere.

Might be worth contacting VF as I did once have a problem with being stuck on 3G for a couple of days, but it was fixed on their end with no hassle.

Why though? You need to compare like with like.

I asked about the speed results of the vodafone offer because to use that data it doesn't use the High Speed APN, it uses the more limited live APN.

And by the sounds of it from the people above, performance through the live APN can be very good too. So the real limitation is now moved from the limitations of this offer over to the quality of the vodafone network in your area and your handset. And there's a mobile forum for that.

Well I signed up under the misconception that Vodafone are the best and fastest network. I don't need any of the extras(won't say no to free Spotify as I said) this deal bring, it's only dressing to me .

The thread is getting on and naturally will turn to people's usage of the deal etc

That's the same reason why I was considering the move- no more "no signal" however they're not perfect I gather

No perfect, but for me they're definitely significantly better than Three both in Dublin and on a trip to Kerry last weekend.
Also what you measure on Speedtest can be misleading as I think Three does prioritise that traffic, so you have to look at practical situations. An example: video streaming was pretty not working or cutting off with low resolution for me in D1/D2 at 5pm on week days. It is perfectly flawless with Vodafone at full resolution. Another one: while driving around the Dingle peninsula I had 4G coverage quite ofter and 3G almost constantly. My GF with Tesco Mobile (i.e. Three's network) next to me was stuck on 2G most of the time with spotty 3G coverage, and regularity without useable data service.

You cant really measure anything against three, its oversold and people abuse the unlimited part to the highest form

I went to clonfert pet farm(about ten minutes from Maynooth)and couldn't backup pictures to onedrive or browse the net. I thought maybe 3G at worse, its vodafone the best network in Ireland(according to almost everyone). After losing pictures once , I need a network to be uploading them ASAP after I take them.

It's Vodafone the best network in Ireland, according to Comreg.

Unless you have an LTE-Advanced Cat.6 or greater handset, and are in a 4G+ area, you won't.

Problem is this is restricted to high end handsets, not aware of any of the more budget range (<?300) handsets that can do Cat.6 (yet).

30-40Mbps download is about best world average you can expect on Cat.4.

I was with 3, now with Virgin. Fastest speed I ever got on 3 was 35Mb/s. Then one day, I was out for lunch with my boss and hit 60Mb/s, I couldn't believe it. He pulled out his phone and got 120Mb/s on Vodafone. Typical.

BTW, I've got 45Mb/s in my house on Virgin, faster than I ever got on 3, and it's the same network. Weird.

Obviously, it depends on your handset and location.

Three are renting the antennas to Virgin (and possible centralising all the data traffic from Virgin's customers to one or more interconnection points), but it is then up to Virgin to route that traffic to the internet using their own network.

    So:
    1) While a Three customer and a Virgin customer share the same base station, depending on the deal between Three and Virgin they might have a different level of priority when using that antenna and one of the 2 networks can also choose to limit data speeds for their customers if it makes sense to them while the other one wouldn't.
    2) When it comes to actually routing your packets to the internet (i.e. once they have already been routed from the base station to a Three or Virgin data centre and still need to be send to the likes of Google or any only service you might use, then a Three customer and a Virgin customer are using completely different network paths which can perform differently).

Just realised this is a 28 day deal, so effectively a 13 month year. Still pretty good, but just good to know as a scheduled top-up will leave you short each time.

Vodafone will let you schedule automated top-ups every 28 days, so no problem with failing to renew th bundle on time. But yes it means you would pay 13 times 20 euros per year.

Having said than you can get a free 20 euros top-up with 250 Cherry Points which is roughly what you will have after 12 automated top-ups, so will it makes things more convoluted just for marketing purposes the actual cost can actually be brought back to 20 euros per month.
