Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Tempted to sign up for the Olympic but will need to do it all in one day meaning an hour and a half drive in the morning to registration and then home again later after the race.
Anyone think this is daft bearing in mind I'll be using it as an early season warmer upper so not majorly concerned with a great time, just getting back into a feel for things ?

Are you based in Arklow? I'm in Greystones, drove to Athy in the morning last year (with my brekkie in the car), registered, racked my bike early (not numbered), re-racked my bike when I realised what direction the transition actually worked in... :o Did the Olympic, had the post-race curry, was home mid-afternoon at the latest.

Any time I've done it I drive down the morning from Dublin and back after the race. Found it grand, most of the races I'd do I'd drive down and back in same day.

Cheers hamstervision. Yes, coming from Arklow so not afraid of a bit of a drive :)
It's on the calendar so, now all I need is to come up with a cover story for the better half.......

Im hopefully doing the double, travelling there and back on the day. I prefer it to staying over somewhere.

the year i did the sprint i was in the last wave, didn't go off till 6.30 in the evening. even getting to put my bike in after lunch, i was pretty much hanging around all day.

Transition opened at 3pm so from transition opening to you hitting the water was 3.5 hrs ( this is if you were there just when it opened ).

The only thing that with this year the Sprint being NS (and Super Series) they might change things a bit. The Sprint may become the bigger race on the day. It seems that entries in to date are indicating this.

so at 3.5 hours is longer than any other race i've done, including HIM/foreign races. Plus had to register before that, we had time to grab lunch between registration and transition opening

i'm not sure what your point is anyway. are you trying to tell me that my perception that i was waiting around all day to race is wrong? that's impressive. race organisers knowing how their customers(which is what they are after all) felt better than they know themselves.

i would never do the sprint in athy again as long as it is in the afternoon as it's a disaster logistically. getting your bike out of transition after 8pm with still the drive home to do doesn't appeal to me. i'd do the morning races no problem, the run isn't great, but it looks like that may be addressed, and other races are bad as well.

the late sprint starts though, no thanks.

Personally never had more than an hour wait in a race, any longer and just won't enter.

Interested to see the new run course. Wonder what the route is. Grass may not always be greener - any maps?

I was just saying the time between transition opening and you're wave starting that's all, no more no less.

Is there any doubt remaining re this event. I notice Trilogy are not marshalling this year, pity because they have always put on a good event in my opinion.

I'm worried about recovery time. I will say I'm going not to use it as a training day but I will race. :)
3K swim and onto a longer bike is what is pulling me in. As it's on Saturday though, I can still get a long bike done the following day...

    99.50 though...here Elvis, give us a discount code :D

If youre worried about recovery time, dont ride the next day?

Hence why I'm asking for thoughts :) One person recommended not doing double, cycle to athy and do olympic...I know of one other person doing Austria considering the olympic.

Let me know what you decide. Thinking of doing this before Roth as the long swim into the bike is tempting. Also it will be nice to have all those training buddies :P

When talking about this race some are even mentioning neoprene swim cap - what water temperature can be expected for this race?

  • Registered Users Posts: 86 ✭✭Tom__jnr2

Last year was grand, around 17 degrees but was sunny and warm day so no issue.

You won't need one. It will be cool getting into the water at first but once you set off cold will be the last thing on your mind.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 447 ✭✭iAcesHigh

17 is more then decent actually - still cold as s*** but should be bearable...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,747 ✭✭✭MojoMaker

It won't be anywhere near 17C on May 30th this year - keep dreaming.

Still, OW swims aren't supposed to be easy or everyone would be doing them - just get in and suck it up or take up badminton.

If we get 17 degrees air temp people are complaining about dehydration on a run!!

Won't be anything close to that in the water, especially a fresh water river.

Racing 795 have their event in the Barrow two weeks before Athy to that will give an idea.

Just entered the Olympic. Have done the Olympic and Double Olympic there before, and loved the swim/cycle, wasn't mad about the run. This year there's a new run course, so want to see what it's like.

  • Registered Users Posts: 390 ✭✭Nanoc

It says they give you a swim hat that's compulsory to wear, is this a Rubber one or a latex type one? Basically should I wear my own too?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,428 ✭✭✭joey100

The hats they give you are only so you know what wave you are in. They will have different colours for each wave. Generally they are a thin plastic-y type of hat. I'd nearly always wear my normal swim hat under it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,112 ✭✭✭Bambaata

Own hat/goggles/race hat and that was the goggles don't get dislodged in the battle with other swimmers and your head stays nice and toasty!

Just been on the site, transfers are allowed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,164 ✭✭✭and still ricky villa

So, reading the race briefing for this today and realised I didn't put in an estimated swim time.
I'm competent but don't want to be put in with the sharks. I registered on the TriAthy site instead of TI so didn't get an option to enter a swim time.
Anyone have any idea how the waves pan out? I've no objection, to be honest, just curious
