Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Correct, here's a chart showing that high giving the warm and dry weather on 13th September and lasted to later on the 20th with the exception of some weak fronts giving cloudier and cooler conditions on the 15th/16th.

    Late October had a ridge collapsing from the northwest on the 27th and into Europe by 30th. Early December was similar. Pressure was relatively high for late December too but its centre was in central Europe away from us so was only temporary with a lot of southwesterly winds giving cloud and drizzle.

    An *EXTREMELY HIGH* surface pressure develops over Europe through Sunday and Monday – 1048-1050 mbar will be possible in some areas!
    A very strong upper-level ridging develops over eastern parts of North Atlantic, expanding into western and central Europe. As a result, an associated surface high-pressure system develops and brings *extremely* high surface pressure. A large part of Europe will experience 1030-1045 mbar mean sea-level pressure, while some regions could even see close to 1050 mbar!
    Such values of surface pressure are VERY extreme for some parts of Europe. Therefore, we should not be surprised to see some location coming very near their all-time high-pressure records.

    Yeah what does very high pressure actually mean in real terms - I know we will get dry, cold and calm but are there risks with 1050mbar?

    The boiling point of water is ~101°C at 1050mbar so be careful, your tea might be slightly hotter than usual! Other than that no significant real world effects other than dry sunny weather, it's just interesting from a meteorological point of view.

    Good to get a chance to see Orion striding his way across the winter sky tonight followed by his sparkling companion Sirius. Hope the High pressure gives us a few more nights like this. Not enough of them so far this winter in this part of the world.

    Yes indeed. When we get a chance to see them the constellations at this time of the year are truly spectacular.

    Midnight runs have backed away from the dizzying highs a little but still potential for the extreme SE to get a 1048 hPa reading early Monday morning:

    Last time pressure got this high in January seems to be in 2000, when 1047.3 hPa was recorded in Valentia at 9am on the 16th (I haven't looked at other station data and data is from Met Eireann)

    A lovely clear sunrise in central Mayo here this morning and a good old crunchy frost underfoot. Some thin and wispy high cloud has filtered in from the west over the past couple of hours but it has done nothing to take away from a cracking January morning so far. Still a nice bright day.

    got to -1 here in Dunshaughlin last night, the coldest night of the year so far.

    Today could well be the coldest day of the winter with temperatures of only 4 or 5C in most parts. Another very cold night tonight. Becoming slightly milder from tomorrow with temperatures around 6 or 7C and rising slightly further next week as the westerlies come back into play once the high pressure loses it's influence later in the week. Becoming very mild again towards next weekend.

    Certainly one of my favourite days of the winter so far. A cool, crisp and pleasant dry day with ice already forming on the car as soon as the sun went down. This spell of high pressure is a nice reprieve from the Atlantic frontal systems.
