    Its not called the VIP air wing...thats a generic term. We have now got one government jet..used to have two which are used for VIP / ministerial transport. Night night!

    Ah jaysus. Surely the new PC-12 could be kitted out to bring them somewhere in an emergency. A Skoda Rapid is good enough for them.

    One Government jet is plenty, no more are needed, in fact is should be done away with, if the Royal Family can charter or fly BA then Leo should too.

    Thats not a direct comparison, but like the President and Taoiseach, the UK Royals, particularly the Queen, only fly commercial if its suitable.

    Otherwise 32 squadron RAF have an A330 voyager modified to include VIP transport accommodation, a couple of BAE 146s and A109 copters and the Royal Household has an S-76 it operates itself in Royal colours for use by senior family members. The UK Govt also charters private aircraft for Royal and Govt trips if needed.

    I've always cited the RNZAF's 2 x 757s with modular fittings to allow for troop transport, civilian airlift, freight, or VIP ops. While the Air Corps doesn't need that level of capacity, something in the A320 family as a flag flying state owned aircraft to serve as an on-call airlift, air ambulance, troop carrier and resupply, citizen rescue / repatriation and VIP transport would be a worthy investment.

    I agree Larbre, I think one of them Embraer E195's would be ideal. Probably a great time to pick up a bargain with many airlines cancelling or deferring orders. We could have a look at the Tucano while we're out there as a possible PC9 replacement and maybe a couple of them now KC 390 airlifters in to the bargain. Could probably get a killer deal in the package.

    It is a joke that the Taoiseach had regularly flown to Brussels in a Casa.

    People see massive cost in decking out an aircraft for 'VIP' use but weigh it up against last minute fares, change of fare, luggage cost, business class fares, many possible uses of a government key as said above and it is a worthwhile investment.

    The Irish PC-9's are actually designated the PC-9M M standing for the Military version of the PC-9.

    I love how you continually flag aircraft X,Y,Z as perfect for the Air Corps & its always a new type of aircraft, the Air Corps have been the launch customer indeed for some aircraft being introduced to Military life, but on other forums with actual Military Air Corps personnel posting there that are now possibly retired they have the common agreement that that is the wrong way to go & the correct way is to buy something tried & tested yet you want the Air Corps to be launch customer for this that & everything in between. No sense.

    Why would you want the Tucano as a PC-9M replacement? Its slower, has a poorer rate of climb, lower service ceiling. Why are you effectively taking a step backwards?


    After the PC-9M those Pilots should be transitioning to a jet aircraft like the Hawk T2, remember also the PC-9M was bought to give pilots a jet like experience so the next aircraft they stepped into would have been a jet.

    Its no surprise really. The 172s were rightly retired but left the AC with a massive operational hole just as utility aircraft were urgently needed for this emergency.

    Hopefully the current crisis won't delay too long the completion of 281, 2 and 3 and that 280 can withdraw to have its paint scheme and specialist equipment fitted. In the meantime, shes a great asset to have and well done to all who worked to procure and press her into service.

    In America and the UK,light aircraft like the Cessna 172 have been delivering PPE, food, water and medical personnel to communities in need. The Civil Air Patrol in both countries have been actively engaged in this. Helicopters and even microlights have made urgent deliveries in the UK because they can land in fields/short runways/roads and deliver equipment right to the user.

    Didn't Norway use an F-16 to deliver something fairly lively?

    Nice work, his average speed was Mach 0.9 of thereabouts. Quick enough to get the job done, slow enough to preserve every window on the west coast.
