I thought it was only Bosch blue tools that were actually real good with the Green stuff being pretty standard. Think Makita and milwaukee tools are the very highly rated brands by the trades (when they think it's not going to get nicked by someone!)

My experience is more in kitchen appliances (and vehicle consumables come to think of it - batteries, blades, bulbs and wipers) than power tools.

I've had a Bosch green corded drill fatally unwind its keyless chuck and the replacement part wasn't worth the cost compared to Lidl's special that week; but at least I could actually replace it if I wanted to. I've a Bosch green heat gun currently; the rest of my power tools are a mix of Lidl specials and whatever was oddly cheap at the time elsewhere; e.g. a Black & Decker saw that uses Bosch-type blades, a no-brander belt sander and an actual Dremel.

LEGO (but the year on year price rises means some new sets are not good value)

I got the Technic Space Shuttle about 25 years ago, it was £127.95. XMas prezzy, I was 11, dunno why the price stuck in my head, maybe it's that it was a right few bob at the time.

What the hell would it go for now?

Lego prices generally go up a little every year; but they have not kept pace with inflation in Ireland and absolutely have not kept pace with purchasing power parity here.

A few years ago I did a comparison with the harbour set I got as a Christmas present in 1994 or something - cost £40 in Smyths. €50. The equivalent set in terms of contents, element count and so on at the time cost under €70.

£40 in 1990 was quite a bit of money. Could go on the pints for a week for that more or less. €70 in 2014 or whenever I did that comparison really wasn't the same.

Seems there are a lot of 'prestige' brands about. They may or may not make a nice product but the value of the brand seems to have more to do with it being fashionable or advertising wealth than the product itself.

Seasonic PSUs seem pretty solid and have a good reputation, but it would be pretty lazy just to buy on that alone. I've never had a pair of Danner boots leak on me or have defective workmanship.

    Black and decker

Have an old drill and jigsaw that still work fine after 30+ years.

My mum has a fridge made by Ford that is 38 years old and still going strong.

+1 on Miele, I used to include Bosch but I've had some poor appliances in recent years.

My Toyota avensis went for years and over 200k miles and we badly treated.

    Jura coffee machines.

    Zwilling kitchen knives.

Patagonia, Rab, and Arc’teryx hiking and mountaineering gear. Berghaus used to be a brand of choice, but quality has fallen off a cliff (if you'll pardon a pun).

    Microsoft Surface laptops.

    Omnifocus personal productivity software.

How have we got this far without anyone mentioning the king of brands:

    Coca-Cola

    Nothing comes close.

It was much better when it was sold as medicine.

They sell off the brand name for some budget crap now though - B&D of 30 years ago is not them now.

That said, my Turkish rebadge "Black and Decker" steam mop does is job fine; but it sure as hell isn't what the brand was meant to be,

    Huawei.

On my second phone also have a Huawei tablet. Great products for a lovely price.

My last phone was a Huawei and it lasted 3 years. It was still working fine when I upgraded, but it was just a bit beaten looking and I had gotten all I possibly could out of the 16GB of memory by that stage. Had a pain in my ass constantly deleting stuff.

I'm now 8 months into owning my second Huawei phone, so far so good.

This isn't a big brand or anything, but the absolute best quality item I've bought in years is the Anker Soundcore Bluetooth speaker

The battery life is ridiculous which is what you want for a portable, and the sound is really good.

Also le Creuset cookware. Biggest brand in cast iron but they last multiple lifetimes and look great. Quality cookware is worth the investment and if you're spending a lot you need the best

Speaking of which, I'm on the lookout for quality chefs knives if anyone has any recommendations

La Creuset is indeed excellent but they really pull the piss with prices.

Xiaomi. My Note 4 is still perfect. I keep thinking about upgrading it but it's still working fine. Long battery life & you get an excellent phone for €200.

Leatherman are unique. I broke a blade on mine - my fault & 7 years old. They sent me a new replacement.

Tilley Hats. My old one started tearing after 5 years. They sent me a new one.

I just did a quick search for one of their pan sets
    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Creuset-51803000010002-Saucepan-gl-Lid-Aluminium/dp/B08249516P/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?crid=3BTZHY3USKMAT&dchild=1&keywords=le+creuset+pan+set&qid=1589099709&sprefix=la+cru%2Caps%2C149&sr=8-2-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUFTSlBWWkZIOFgwQU4mZW5jcnlwdGVkSWQ9QTAxNDgzNzZVTlU4SDZCQkpDT0MmZW5jcnlwdGVkQWRJZD1BMDQ0ODQ5NTFFUDhWWjJESVlVTDkmd2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9hdGYmYWN0aW9uPWNsaWNrUmVkaXJlY3QmZG9Ob3RMb2dDbGljaz10cnVl

    Sweet Lord!

    Are they really that good?

I mean, I would guess they are top quality stuff, but I bought a pan set about 20 years ago for well under £100. Think they might have even been about 60 or so. And they are still in use.

I appreciate mine are probably not to everyones taste, but surely you could buy a pan set for 100 and change every decade? You often get half price deals on pan sets so you'd pick up decent ones anyway.
