Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Portmarnock Links GC defeted The Island CG in Barton Cup

Bit of a farce one in Pierce Purcell.(Cahir vs Faithlegg)

First tee time in Gold Coast was 15:10. Alas, the inevitable happened. 2-2 with last match on the course; Cahir win 18th to square that match up. Pitch dark outside and thus the GUI now have to work to find a suitable time to play the sudden death hole.

Classy stuff all round to let this situation happen. Gold Coast not coming across too well giving a best tee time of 15:10..

Carton House beat Lucan GC in the Senior Cup yesterday. I believe Naas GC were beaten by Westmanstown, something of an upset.

Can't blame host club(gold coast) GUI agreed time with both clubs beforehand.
Knowing gold coast nobody on timesheet on a Sunday after 12 usually.

I was in 2nd group for faithlegg

Was going to post about this. Both clubs had asked to put it on earlier. Was never a chance of making it before dark. Even before the off on the putting green we were chatting with Cahir players and everyone knew we weren't going to get finished.

2 referees there and one of them giving us a nudge on the 9th looking at his watch as we headed up fairway even though we got a conpetitive fourball thru 9 holes in 1hr 50 mins. Our group didn't lose one ball, and everyone was actually in every hole tbh. Very good quality match. Neither group took more than 15 seconds over a putt, nor did we read any putt from back of hole etc.. We won ours on 17 at about 20 past 7. So just under so not slow

What happened after was a farce, embarrassing for the GUI and potentially dangerous tbh. Group after us were level going up 18 and could barely see the ball in flight with 6/7 players looking to see where the ball went. We lost that game on 18. Our 5th group got beaten on 16

With the match at it all came down to our 4th group who were 1 up going into 18. Par 5 and honestly nobody knew where the drives were going. Was pitch dark. Only by feeling, our group did know they went right

The same thing happened when hitting wedges from 130 to green. I was standing directly behind them to see it and not a hope. Both of them ended up right of green beside other players who didn't see balls coming either. Ended up losing to the only 1 who hit green and eventually referee allowed them to comeback in a few days

An absolute shambles tbh from GUI. Makes a mockery of guys who practiced for this. Got to ask yourself.. Would this have happened for a Senior Cup? Both clubs had asked for this to be put on earlier but no budging. I mean, surely there was one club in the south with tee times available for 12 or 1 o'clock this weekend

I played Senior Cup yesterday and we caught up with a 4 person scramble after the 9th. Club captain was watching and insisted that we be let through groups as necessary. That certainly helped re timing, wouldv been a v long day otherwise.

Were the pp matches held up by members comp or was it just that it started so late?
Would be very surprised if gold coast was busy until 3pm on a Sunday.
Pretty confident any of the courses in the east could have facilitated the arch at an earlier time

Nope. Our first tee off was 3.15. With the GUI protocol of 10 mins inbetween 4balls the last group set off at 3.55

There were 3 balls ahead of us but not held up any bit

This may he seen by some as off topic but. With crowds now being left into sporting events, I presume GUI will update their policies regarding crowds in next day or so? Area final at weekend, I know quite a few who would love to travel and watch

I am sure supporters have been to most games any way. Not like u will get hundreds turning up

Yes that has been the case but regional finals are held at neutral venues, so clubs in question can enforce the rules, which is the case this weekend.

Matches can still go ahead in the all Ireland events but not Barton cup or underage events. Matches in Dublin behind closed doors.

Jumping a head a bit, but figured this was relevant here as we played Donegal Golf Club in an open comp last week, hadn't played it in awhile but was looking very lush. Its a long course but wide fairways and some really great holes, length is definitely a benefit, I struggled.

Only complaint was the pins, they have big thick pins, much ticker than any link course I've played, there no taper at the hole at all, plus they have these silly ball retrievers that hang away from the pin so if a ball was going to drop in the back door, it won't with this thing. In our 4 ball, we had 3 putts that didn't drop but would have dropped on another course with different pins, I know it might seem minor but guarantee it will cause a controversy at the Cups and shields with some match being decided by a badly designed pin.

Opinions on still having All Ireland’s etc in Donegal for the Pierce Purcell? (And I think Bruen too?)

Next round of Purcell for our team is in Fermoy - Two potential matches and it’s the same for Bruen on the same day.

Should this stuff even be going ahead in all honesty?

Why not?? Make it behind closed doors if necessary. Independent travel for each team member. Practically no risk. Only issue that could be a problem is potentially two fourball matches on the same day. Naturally foursomes is quicker than fourball so could be a test of a clubs panel rather than their top 5 pairings.

    Pierce purcell Gort.

In Munster Castletroy beat Dungarvan in the Junior Cup final

In the Pierce Purcell Spanish Point vs Kenmare is 2-2. The final game is all square after 22 holes and they have to return tomorrow afternoon to finish the match

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,028 ✭✭✭paulos53

This was how dark it was on the 21st in that match.
I believe they skipped the par 5 4th hole and went to the par 3 5th to try to finish the match but no luck

The SP team that won the two matches by a big margin are a joke. Junior cup players more like it. They were 2 under for 14 holes in one of the games in the earlier rounds.

Anybody know the lineups for each of these teams?

Played Killeen in Wednesday and it was in brilliant condition. Tough but very fair course.

Belvoir Park won the Ulster Senior Cup today, beat Slieve Russell 4-1 in Final which was played at Murvagh, where the All Ireland finals will also be played, they will have a decent chance, think all team members play off plus 2 or better

Deflating experience yesterday playing JB quarters.. Up against 2 young lads playing golf all summer... a 3.5 and a 4 handicapper... Me and my partner off 10 and 5... It was like being in a junior cup better ball and I wasn't invited.. The young guys hitting it 70 yards past me and 50 yards past my partner.. We done well to take them to 16...wasn't enjoyable and I think I will not play Bruen again in 4 ball format... funny thing is we would have had a chance if it had been 4somes.. They were a bit wild at times but never on the same holes... 2 lovely young lads and the best of luck to them....

4ball definitely ruined it. A 7/8 handicapper had no chance of playing

Don’t give up just because of one match. That can always happen. Young lads who are constantly golfing and on a very high upward progression.

I got enough hammerings in my younger days but it didn’t put me off. A 5 handicapper playing against scratch players in senior cup was a tough initiation.

Actually it did bother me..I was only giving my personal experience..not whinging... it only took 2 matches to get there.. playing with a 5 HC it was always how well he played that determined whether we won or not.. I would only come in every now and then.. unlike 4somes where u take every 2nd shot...I didn't feel a full part of it.. the further you go in the comp the lower the HCs will be...but hey ho .. thats the rules and it is the same for all teams left in it.. and I hope the lads who beat us win it...

It's a rarity and not the norm. I played as high handicaper last 3 years and enjoying this format much better. Less pressure. Came up against one pair that had two low handicappers. The older heads have been harder to beat, more experienced, wiser etc.

Very easy to enjoy it when you've inflated your handicap intentionally to beat lads on a more regular basis

I was 8 last year, got down to 6 this year. How is that handicap inflation? And most of the low low people playing off ten are young fellas who naturally are going to shoot down if good enough. We are at the end of the season, people are going to get better. Using last year's handicap is problematic some times yes, but it is same rules for every club

I think it was a bit easier than that unfortunately. Galway GC beat Galway Bay in semi on 20th.

    5&4, 5&4, 3&2 in the final :(

Faithlegg gave them a bit of a hiding I believe
They seem to have a great crop of youngsters coming through
Having said that, Douglas had 14yr old Jack Murphy playing and yesterday was his first loss in the comp, so a decent prospect as well

Killarney was incredible yesterday - was a class final, unreal golf by both teams. Lots of eagles, chip ins and almost every match under par. Top three matches went Faithleggs way and the last two were level when called in. Faithlegg will take some beating in the Irish finals based on what I saw yesterday

Jimmy Bruen Munster finals this weekend. Berehaven wiped the floor with everyone. Bet Tramore 4-1 and then Shannon 3-2 in final. Senior Cup standard with their high qualifiers playing level par or better a common theme with one 10 playing 3 under for his round with the pairing 5 under through 15. Phenomenal golf and best of luck to them in the finals. Can't see anyone touching them, even on the links. Years in the making I'm sure
