I'd a similar story to mackerski.

As I understand it, you pay in the the shop what you think you'll use, say €50. If you overestimate, and the tank fills at less then €50, then you have to go *back* in to get your change - two visits. If you underestimate then it stops when it's filled to €50 worth, which may not be a full tank, and if you've OCD tendancies like me, you may want a full tank. The "pay at pump" vs "pre pay at counter" signs weren't obvious to me when I first visited. I'd not have a problem with "pay at pump" as it doesn't matter if you over estimate as only the amount used will come off your credit/debit card. But I wasn't going to risk the two scenarios of either (1) having to make two visits to get my change or (2) not ending up with a full tank, so I took my business elsewhere, and won't be returning unless I'm desperate. Of course, this is first world problems, but there are other stations that don't have these problems and these are the ones I'll give my business to.

This is my pet hate too and I've noticed it a lot since more and more of these stations have opened (Obama Plaza, Birdhill etc). These forecourts have so much to offer that the delay/linger time is longer. Common courtesy should dictate that unless you are literally buying petrol, you should move away from the fuel bay once you've filled up and park in the customer parking area if you want to also get a barista prepared coffee, made to order sandwich or use the loos etc etc. It's so annoying when you're stuck behind a car at the pump and they eventually saunter out with their Subway sandwich, coffee or big mac etc....!

Are you being serious? Pre pay pumps can't operate on an unknown amount. You basically tell them 20/30/40 whatever, pay them that amount and that's how much you get.

Really not sure if you are on a wind up

If that's how it works, it's a really crappy pay at pump experience (well, a bit less crappy than not working at all).

I've used many pay at pump systems and I'm pretty sure all of them did a pre-auth for €100 and then ultimately charged whatever you tanked.

No wind up - I genuinely do expect a well designed service.

I never been there yet BUT prepay for me means I pay €50 at the counter, go back to the car, insert pump, press the button AND the pump should stop at €50.
    If it does, happy day.
If not, i keep holding until it stops, i mean full tank.

That's every time I meet these "pre-pay" pumps and the guy behind till says is not working like that, i have to make sure I stop it at the paid amount...

The ones at the N3 service will slow down and stop when you get to the amount you authorised.

The other type, the ones you pay at the counter before hand, usually work that way too. I don't recall any that go past what you paid for that I've ever used.

Had a bad experience with the new N3 service station recently. On the way to the airport @5AM I was very low in fuel. I pulled into the station and tried 3 pumps using the "pre-pay" option and none would accept my Visa Debit card. They couldn't take it through the window either as they don't have a card machine that reaches to it! None of the staff could help either obviously because the place is locked up for the overnight shift. I was left with no option but to drive to the airport on an empty tank. Filled up at the airport using their "pre-pay" option with no issues. What a joke of a service.

I saw hoarding up for Solstrene Grene on the old Harry Corry shop next to Dunnes on the lower ground floor in Blanch SC today - due to open in late June.

I've seen their shops on the Continent - they're very like Meadows & Byrne, homeware, gifts and furnishings etc - so will be a really nice addition to the centre I would think.

I think it said it's opening in July on their FB page. Can't wait.

Insomnia opened yesterday. Paid a visit this morning, it's lovely and bright, and surprisingly spacious! Will definitely be back...

Was in there today and it is a great addition and you're spot on - it really is extremely spacious with loads of comfortable seating so great for lingering/relaxing.

On a different note, I tried the M3 Services centre today for the first time to fill up with unleaded this morning and 4 out of the 6 pumps had out of order signs!! WTF??!!:confused::confused:. The queues for the remaining pumps were backed up so I gave up and used my old reliable Esso near Travellodge. I never did get to see the inside of the foodcourt but why on earth could so many pumps be out of order at the same time?! Despite all the complaints here and in passing, the car park was still very busy so it seems to be doing well regardless. Next time I think I'll just use it for food!

They might be still finding their feet in terms of supply and demand? Saturday afternoon they were all open anyway, so they may have been let down by their supplier or just bad or misjudged demand management.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,355 ✭✭✭✭Larbre34

I got €35.00 worth of fuel at the M3 services, paid by debit card at the pump. A day later the transaction showed on my account and a further day after that another transaction with the same POS showed for €1, no rhyme or reason.

Now as i havent been back that way, and life is too short to purposely go in and show them my online account and argue over a quid, i simply wont be going back for fuel. Keep an eye for that one folks.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 27,833 ✭✭✭✭ThisRegard

It's the same system as to how some online retailers or hotels operate, it's like a validity check on your card, it doesn't actually get debited from your card, it's just a pending transaction that's never completed. The €1 should have appeared on your account first, that's how it has worked on mine anyway.

Was it your first time using your card at the pay at pump? I got the €1 transaction the first time I used it, I haven't noticed it on subsequent transactions.

Im sure not related to M3onN3 station card charges but on my business VISA card i had few .99c once a month for 3 months. Then, shortly after,my whole account has been emptied. I guess the fcukers tried to fool the system by giving the trusted transaction / approved supplier status and then go for the big bang, without rasing alarms on the VISA systems.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 27,833 ✭✭✭✭ThisRegard

Yeah, I've seen the test transactions before on accounts that are about to get raided.

Were your 99c transactions from someone that you expected to be debiting your account from?

Anyone know who is opening what looks to be a restaurant on Main St, Blanch just up from the new Insomnia cafe? The frontage looks very attractive but no sign up yet!

I think its meant to be a burger style joint / restaurant, run by one of the owners of Maximilians.

Could do with a nice burger place in the area, and if it is owned by the guy who owns Maximillians, then it should be a nice burger place.

Clonsilla to get a new coffee shop on Weavers Row after An Bord Pleanala granted permission. It appears Spice of India appealed Fingal Co Co's original grant of permission but the Board sided with the applicant.

    http://www.pleanala.ie/documents/reports/246/R246045.pdf

While I welcome a proper sit down cafe option for Clonsilla, the parking really is a problem in that whole specific area with Spar/post office/Romayo/Italian restaurant combined with the busy junction. I've attempted to pull in several times to get a takeaway etc and had to drive away due to no spaces.

Søstrene Greene opening in the towncentre in old harry corry.

I never knew of it before but looks like a mix of tiger and ikea at nice prices - nice stuff. Looks good!

Looks like a very nice addition to the towncentre.

There's one in Dun Laoghaire too. My in-laws live over that direction and when it was opening they picked up a brochure to show me. I couldn't get over how cheap everything was. Really looking forward to having a look at the one in Blanch.

I'm actually the one who set up the Facebook Page for the owner. I'm currently working on the website. As far as I know he's hoping to be open by this weekend. I've seen the interior and it looks nice. There's a big charcoal oven alright so it will specialise in grilled food. I haven't seen the menus yet but I'd say I'll get them in the next day or so. Will put them on the FB page as soon as I get them.

Any sign of the menus? Given that it opens from 10 on Saturday and Sundays I'm presuming (hoping) they'll be doing brunch.

Absolutely, but the desserts just jumped out at me. The brunch menu is okay price wise. I never order a fry so I'm not sure if €12.50 is expensive or not, but pancakes for €6.50 is pretty good. Depends on how many you get though!

Now saying on FB that the €9 was a typo and they're actually €7.50. Typo my posterior, chancing their arm more like. €7.50 is still pricey IMO!

I'll give them a go though. I'm delighted there's another restaurant in Blanch, and especially one that does brunch.

That would be pretty typical pricing for a côte de bœuf. It's more than likely for 2 people, although it should really specify that.

€12.50 for a fry, I'll strike that off my list of potential places for Sunday brunch, absolute robbery!

Menu looks good. Not that expensive either.

58 is standard for cote du boeuf, of course it's for two people. Brunch is mainly in the 6-8 euro range.

I'm looking forward to checking it out.

had a quick look in Rudys yesterday. Was disappointed that we aren't getting a family burger style place but the decor was pretty nice. it is not a family place by any means. The staff on duty said they are not settled on the menu yet and they will see how it goes. It is certainly at the upper reaches of the price range for the suburbs but that is not to say it wont work. The menu is on line at http://rudysrestaurant.ie/ and it is impressive enough. Blanch is starting to have a vastly improved selection of places to eat and get coffee.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,134 ✭✭✭holly_johnson

Wow! Just looked at the menu online. They're certainly aiming at the higher end of the market. No way am I paying those prices without knowing the food is exceptional. Even in town those prices would be high.
