Oafley, just remove the "v=" from the text between the YOUTUBE tags. It only needs to have the hex code.

That video seems unclear, in that it seems to imply the actors really were flying those jets, which I just don't believe for a second; yet during the snippets of Cruise in the cockpit, I didn't spot anyone else that looked like the real pilot.

And yeah, it'll be a weird world when Cruise becomes too old to perform these stunts himself (with the suggestion being that the next 2 MI films are shot back to back for that precise reason).

I wouldn’t take that from it. It’s a couple of years training to get near those things and I’m sure the vast majority people understand that. I don’t think they’re being disingenuous. I am shocked that the rest of the cast was allowed/ were up for it. Cruise I’d never any doubt.

This is how you make a blockbuster movie in 2019.

Really looking forward to this more than any movie in the last few years to be honest.

Great marketing too so far which is rare enough these days.

He's in the backseat of a two seat (Super)Bug(F/A-18F), with the camera facing aft. The real pilot is in the front seat doing the work. Its will of course be interspersed with, in all probability lower interior body shots in a mockup, and external shots of (a) real F/A-18E, and there you go. As far as I can remember, its something similar to what they did in the first movie, where with the aid of some interest in camera angles they gave the impression that that were in the real thing.

There were apparently alot of really pissed Navy personnel on the USS Theodore Roosevelt by the time filming on the carrier wrapped.

You are spot on but there ARE some shots of him actually flying. It was a contract stipulation by Cruise himself before he would agree to do it. That there would be at least one high-speed shot in the film of him actually flying. He has actually been trained to fly one.

Ah right....It might be his own P-51 he's flying. Not sure how willing the DoD is about letting a civilian fly one of their birds(maybe a T-45), regardless of how well trained/famous they are. Then again it is the States

May seem off topic, but I started watching the last Transformers webseries yesterday and one of the preludes is about Starscream.

Smiled when I heard the music because clearly whoever made it thought if it's about a jet, it has to have a very Top Gun like soundtrack

Had been excited for this film but forgot all about it due to it being postponed, that was untill the trailer popped on YouTube. Looks incredible and cannot wait to see it.

It's not out till November but Cruise, Miles Teller & Jennifer Connelly were on the Graham Norton show this week promoting it, that's a bit mad!
Episode is not airing tonight because of Philly's passing

Sure the new Bond movie's song is a year old at this point.

Sure the new Bond movie's song is a year old at this point.
And the fact that it won a grammy before anyone has even seen the movie is an absolute farce.

Surely a song in that category has to be judged in conjunction with the visual media it is purporting to represent?

Graham saw it, needs to be seen on the big screen, IMAX

I'd always kind of assumed it's a big screen movie. I imagine the people who saw the first one in a cinema might be able to say for sure.

I just spotted Myles Teller's character in that "Real flying" video... call sign "Rooster" and that tashe? You have to presume he's going to be playing Goose's son?

Yes he pretty much revealed it on GN

Didn't know Teller was in it until I saw that clip. Taking it as a positive, have liked him in everything I've seen him in.

Do we have an inkling why both have been pushed back? Cluttered schedule or just Delta anxiety in the US?

My first assumption was that Tom wants his full slice of the box office and the studio wants him to have it too.

Hollywood Reporter saying as much about the Box Office money..

    https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/top-gun-maverick-mission-impossible-7-release-date-tom-cruise-1235006871/

The date moves come as concerns over the coronavirus pandemic and its delta variant continue to hamper theater attendance and make putting tentpoles into cinemas a risky proposition for studios. Paramount, like other studios, regularly consults with epidemiologists on decisions such as this, and the studio is hopeful the box office will recover in 2022 when these films are now set to open.

Tom Cruise in an introduction to an American Football match this evening.

Combined with Top Gun Theme and Clips of the new film.

Enough to have me wanting another trailer, I'll say that much!

Celebrate America HooRah energy with a German sports car 😁

Wikipedia's telling me this coat $152 million; now under the Hollywood Accounting rule of 2x the budget to break even - plus maybe some extra lost for the various delays - that's north of $300 million worldwide before this film makes money.

I'm dead curious to learn how this does; assuming the film's not a piece of ****, whether (Cruise + Nostalgia) - CoVid can pull a crowd. This still opening in China? Given previous issues over having a Taiwanese flag in the trailer (the horror).

I'd say there's an additional element in there of Cruise gaining a heap of experience building on top of a franchise with Mission Impossible.

Staying somehow grounded to the original feel and yet building on it doesn't sound easy for sure.

Plus, there's got to be a weight of expectation from the fans of the original.

Anyway.. I've just googled for a theme for top gun maverick and listen to two versions.. no pressure to the producers 😁

I'd be surprised if it lost money and I really doubt it will pull in a billion. Its the one film this year where ill be saying "son were going to the cinema!" so yeah to the nostalga and lots of dog fighting jets and cool aircraft carrier scenes, whats not to like!!!

I doubt it'll lose money, I'd just wonder how well it'll do against a climate allergic to anything other than dependable brands. What's in its favour for sure is Tom Cruise's latter-day attempts to kill himself on screen via a late stage middle age crisis; means the action should be spectacular - and "real". We've already seen footage of Cruise shotgunning a takeoff; while Joseph Kosinski has shown himself an able visual director.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,241 ✭✭✭✭MisterAnarchy

Thats a good point you make about it being "Real".

From the clips I've seen, the action looks real and genuine unlike so many modern blockbusters with their blatantly fake cgi which robs it of any suspense.

They used a revolutionary 6 Imax camera setup in each cockpit.

I have no doubt that visually and sonically it will be groundbreaking, the question is will the script be good enough.

Unless Tom wrote it himself can it really be that good??? 😁

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

Well, the three screenwriters are: Christopher McQuarrie (who wrote and directed all the latter-day Mission Impossibles, so knows how to craft a damn fine action movie); Ehren Kruger (who cowrote 3 of the 5 transformers movies, and so doesn't know how to write an action movie!); and Eric Warren Singer (whose biggest credit is co-writing American Hustle, worked with Kosinski before with Only the Brave so may just onboard to punch up some parts).

McQuarrie's the standout there, but I wouldn't know to what extent each of the 3 men has contributed to the script that was shot. If it's all McQuarrie... hype! If it's all Kruger... uh-oh.

I can't imagine this ever being as quotable as the original but, let's face it, Top Gun was never about the script... or even the plot tbh. Once they have epic, well shot, dog-fights with real planes tearing off runways to that theme tune, I'll be happy...

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

One more trailer for the road; you definitely get the benefit of all that "in cockpit" footage, though there were a few suspiciously fake, CGI shots...
