They were statues of slaves ffs What do you think they were for? Lol. It'll take some really limber mental gymnastics to make the anti BLM argument on this.

A depiction of something is not automatically a celebration of it.

First they came for the socialists...

When they finally go after statues of Roman emporers, the world might finally wake up and end this abhorrent removal of art, culture and history.

It should be illegal. An international hotel group should not be allowed to remove statues from the 1800s because some Americans have lost the plot.

I love how it says the players can take the knee "should they wish to do so".

Who isn't going to get down? Its like the poppy now, you haven't got a choice.

Really think one or two players are going to stand when everyone else is kneeling? The mob would be online immediately calling you a racist and trying to end your career.

Wait until the Premiership in November. First we will have a minute taking the knee, then a minute for the poppy and then a few minutes clapping for the Front line Heroes and another minute in memory of some oul lad who used sell programmes outside the ground

It sounds like they wanted to remove the statues anyway.
This is just a means of removing them knowing that the council will be unlikely to object due to BLM.
The hotel also looks like it is taking the moral high ground

    Genius from management.

Really shouldnt they knock the hotel down as it was used by the British in 1916 to shoot down at the Volunteers dug into trenches in St. Stephens Green.
It was a brilliant manouevre by that great military technician, Countess Markievitz to order trenches be dug in a park surrounded by rows of four storey buildings.

Also reminds me of the futuristic film Equilibrium. Anything thought provoking needs to be wiped out.

These BLM nutters and those that pander to them are no different to the Taliban, in fact I've become pretty convinced that the left are now enforcing their own flavour of 'secular Sharia' and nobody is standing up to the lunacy.

    This crap needs to end.

Illegal for the hotel to change its own decorations? Do people not even pretend to read the stories before a kneejerk reaction?

Do they have planning permission to alter the facade of the building?

Yes they should not want to run a profitable business. I think they should all just close down. Staff can go on welfare.

But who will pay for welfare via income tax if all of the businesses who only operate for profit close?

you really missed my point - of course the Marriot should be allowed make a profit - its the hypocritical Virtue signalling I have an issue with - The marketing department will jump on any hip cause that makes them look good and (woke) not cause they really care about the cause but because it will make more money in the end. Pure subtle Advertising / not about compassion - look who the Shelbourne actually serves !

Yes their pricing is surely exclusionary to the most vulnerable in society, we need to stamp out this kind of elitism.

It is worrying to see this US crap making its way into Irish politics and culture. We should all try to reject it as it's toxic and divisive and is almost like a virus, making people obsessed with race and sex.

Worrying, but unsurprising. I became political a few years ago when I realized this **** was going to reach our shores eventually. The interconnected world made all this inevitable, it was always going to happen when Irish people consume mass amounts of American media. It's been this way every since the creation of cinema, and wider media, but the internet has rapidly accelerated the process.

A man may know that nobody has insulted him, but that he has invented the insult for himself, has lied and exaggerated to make it picturesque, has caught at a word and made a mountain out of a molehill--he knows that himself, yet he will be the first to take offense, and will revel in his resentment till he feels great pleasure in it.”- ― Fyodor Dostoevsky, The Brothers Karamazov

The hotel is late to the "likes" party, it was trendy two months now. Now they just seem out of touch.

Mr McGreevy said it was an interesting decision by the hotel "considering we are not talking about contemporary slavery here. We're talking about slavery that would have occurred in the time of Pharaohs".

i suppose slavery is slavery, and anything that represents slavery needs to be removed.

The only rational reason for removing these statues is to stop idiots in masks vandalising them and the rest of the hotel along with them.

They were built by slaves to be the sarcophagi of Pharaohs who owned them. They are the definition of what these people profess to hate.

Thankfully they were constructed by African Pharaohs thousands of years before the Caucasian Ptolemy dynasty so they'll get a pass.

unfortunately it has become a self fulfilling prophecy at this stage. if they do go back up they will be vandalised.

This is "Two Moors" by Rembrandt.

Its located in the Mauritshuis museum in Holland. Burn it down.

Like what, leaving Nazi statues in the Berlin city center?

There’s a proper place for history and it’s not always in positions of honor.

Given that the two most recent high profile statues in the United States to be pulled down are of a Norwegian immigrant abolitionist who died fighting the Confederate States, and of a black woman representing social progress, I'd say that any statue is now fair game. If you're wondering what the problem with a satue representing someone who died fighting against slavery it is because

the statue of Heg is a monument to a white savior and not a monument to black liberation.
    empowerwisconsin.org/dem-senate-candidate-endorses-rioters

But on the topic of fascism, I wonder when Sean Russell or Yeats' statue will get the chop here, I wonder?

But addressing your actual point, there is plenty of Nazi architecture in Berlin, and plenty of art that predated the Nazis that they appropriated (like the Brandenburg Gate). Do you suggest dynamiting it all?

Is it not so that these statues depict people from a pre-Egyptian civilization that came to an end about 3,500 years ago? That is to say, they have as much to do with the oppression of black people as the man in the moon, and this is Marriott International virtue-signalling and bringing unwanted American "cancel culture" bullshit over here. I wouldn't be surprised if they needed planning permission to do that either, the Shelbourne's facade and decor is listed.

I can deal with the event junkies getting caught up in say, garth brooks mania for a weekend but this is insane

Wrong thing to be sucked into its extremely dangerous for us as a remote island society in the North Atlantic . We’re not simply being “down” with the afro- American community here, who has been instilled as trendy by a media driven by ulterior motives for us it pertains to Africa as a whole. We’re sending out all the wrong signals to an extremely “vocal” people who tend to make more than just an entrance and enforce themselves on you. It won’t just impinge on our way of life, here it has the potential to alter our history, culture and institutions but to meddle with our our very dna profoundly and irrevocarably.
