Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

What's the story with the Mi Asian Street food take away in Johnstown, seems to have opened, then shut just as quick, I saw the signs were down also

I have no idea what happened to Mi, wasn't open long at all and then it closed over night. they had even down some small renovations inside since they opened. it was nice food too.

similar to what happened to that place called Hanya on Michael street beside paddy power bookies. just suddenly closed over night. I see that place has been cleared out recently, took everything including the floor!!

Not sure about Mi, they seemed to open with a fanfare, fairly vocal on social media then just disappeared with a post in late August saying they were temporarily closing for a couple of days. I think they're a chain, albeit there's another Mi Street Food in Gorey.

Does Waterford really need 4 dedicated noodle bars though, considering about a year ago there was none? 2 Ramens, Lana out by the Cove and Mi Street food, maybe the business just wasn't there for them?

I see WowBurger, who in my opinion are the best of the "hip" recent burger bars around Dublin are opening in Waterford tomorrow, in the Craftsman of all places :confused: Seems a very strange choice of venue to me, both in respect of pub and location. They do tend to partner up and have locations in pubs in Dublin but these tend to be trendy/hipster type places and are generally central enough locations. Time will tell I guess, I can see them doing really well in Waterford, just not in that location. Maybe it's better for my waistline they aren't that central :pac:

Had to laugh at joe.ie calling Wowburgers location as being in Waterford city centre.

Just because its not on the Dunmore road doesnt mean its in a bad location, its actually in a great location and im sure they done their homework before opening up,thousands of people living, working and studying in a small area seems like a good location to me.

Have I touched a nerve? :p I don't know where you're getting the Dunmore road from? I personally don't live on the Dunmore road either, so if they opened there that would be equally inconvenient for me. When I say a more central location, I meant a more central location i.e. the city centre.

I agree, in normal times Lisduggan would be a good location, however these aren't normal times and I personally can't see people going to the hassle of going to Lisduggan just to get a burger, just as I couldn't see people heading to any other pub in the suburbs just to get a burger, no matter how good they are.

Time will tell and personally I hope they do well, I just don't understand why they didn't open somewhere in the city centre.

Haha no you didn't hit a nerve ,my point was that it doesn't need people to go to the hassle of going there ,it has enough people in the area to support it normal times or not, there's thousands living in Larchville,Lismore,Lisduggan,Ballybeg ,Sunrise crescent,Woodlawn Grove etc ,then you have couple thousand working in the estate who don't live in the area who would go in there on their way into/home from work,i agree dont know why they didnt open in town but maybe they'll see how this goes first.

There was an Abrakebabra in town years before there was one in the garage on the Cork road to be fair. Many a top was destroyed whilst devouring taco chips pissed after a night out. They must have made a fortune during the 2000s. I think Des Bishop did a stint in the original one in John's Street for a tv show before they moved premises across the road for a bit.

Yeah I remember them the Des Bishop doc was in where apache is now and then there was one next to the kentucky

The ones that are open now have nothing on the old ones.

I haven't tried Wowburger but generally I find those type of chains very overrated. Same as Five Guys - queues out the door for a sloppy, greasy product.

Phat Cow in Grady's Yard do a smashing burger. Pricey but worth it for a treat.

Sounds horrific tbh. Exactly like being a wino. In fact the local winos and dead beats will likely buy themselves a few plastic pint glasses and share the ambience without paying pub prices. lol

    A Waterford street crawl

Yeah think this new arrangement could become messy esp with Christmas/New Year coming up

Never knw we might go back a few levels and pubs could reopen

I don’t think pubs are expected to be open for the remainder of the year, this has been widely mentioned in the media over the last week or two. At best it will be level 3 for the month of December I reckon.

Yeah but can still see outdoor pubs been very busy over December. Tbh 15 max numbers is more hassle than its worth

Maybe fully pedestrianising the apple market full time for December might help and the places down there can work with that

All over Europe you can have a drink walking around enjoying a city centre from a plastic cup/glass or whatever. Always the Irish will think of the worst case scenario to come from something like this.

Other than the UK and maybe some of the more severe Eastern states, I think it's fair to say the rest of Europe doesn't have the same same negative relationship to alcohol and drunkenness that we do.

Big feckin difference between the Mediterranean lads enjoying a few beers in the piazza and what goes on in town centres here every normal weekend.

The best thing that may come from CoVid may be the death of pubs as we know them: people going to the pub, just to be going to the pub. The weakest performers will die off and what's left may actually have to offer something other than just alcohol to earn custom.

So in your opinion, “The best thing that may come from Covid” is that hundreds of pubs will close permanently. Am I reading that correct?

Yeah. And not just pubs. It may have a cleansing effect on the market for a while host of things and a lot of the hangers on who were offering no value may fall by the wayside. People may make better choices with regard to who they give their money to. There will be much wailing and gnashing of teeth of course but ultimately it's a positive to get rid of vampire businesses.

The fact they have lasagne on the menu means I wouldn't eat in there if you paid me. Part of a chain of restaurants as well. Doesn't the sign outside say indian/asian/European cuisine or something? Not for me but best of luck and hope they do well and keep some people in employment.

Always end up with EastEnders when I'm going Indian over the years. Tried all the rest and nothing wrong with some of them but they are always my go to.

I'm always surprised how well the pizza/kebab/chippers etc places do in Waterford, suppose the prices are cheap enough

Few shady characters going in and out of them sometimes tbf

Well that's a nice sweeping post, any chance of being more specific or is it just all the non Irish? (As obviously there's no shady characters ever in and out of those places)
