    As Jesus was leaving Jericho with his disciples and a sizable crowd,
    Bartimaeus, a blind man, the son of Timaeus,
    sat by the roadside begging.
    On hearing that it was Jesus of Nazareth,
    he began to cry out and say,
    "Jesus, son of David, have pity on me."
    And many rebuked him, telling him to be silent.
    But he kept calling out all the more,
    "Son of David, have pity on me."
    Jesus stopped and said, "Call him."
    So they called the blind man, saying to him,
    "Take courage; get up, Jesus is calling you."
    He threw aside his cloak, sprang up, and came to Jesus.
    Jesus said to him in reply, "What do you want me to do for you?"
    The blind man replied to him, "Master, I want to see."
    Jesus told him, "Go your way; your faith has saved you."
    Immediately he received his sight
    and followed him on the way.

    Commentary:
    10: 47 Son of David: Refers to the Messiah, who was expected to be a descendant of King David and the rightful heir to his throne (Is 9: 7; Ezek 34: 23-24). Many hoped he would possess the power to heal sickness and exorcize demons (Mt 15: 22), much like the original son of David, King Solomon (Wis 7: 20). Here the confession of Bartimaeus is ironic: this blind man sees Jesus' messianic identity more clearly than most people in Mark's Gospel.

    Gospel MK 12:38-44
    In the course of his teaching Jesus said to the crowds,
    "Beware of the scribes, who like to go around in long robes
    and accept greetings in the marketplaces,
    seats of honor in synagogues,
    and places of honor at banquets.
    They devour the houses of widows and, as a pretext
    recite lengthy prayers.
    They will receive a very severe condemnation."

    He sat down opposite the treasury
    and observed how the crowd put money into the treasury.
    Many rich people put in large sums.
    A poor widow also came and put in two small coins worth a few cents.
    Calling his disciples to himself, he said to them,
    "Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in more
    than all the other contributors to the treasury.
    For they have all contributed from their surplus wealth,
    but she, from her poverty, has contributed all she had,
    her whole livelihood."

He told them another parable: The kingdom of heaven is like leaven, which a woman took and buried in three measures of flour, until all of it was leavened. All these things Jesus spoke to the crowds in parables, and without parables he did not speak to them; that what was spoken by the prophet might be fulfilled, I will open My mouth in parables, I will utter things hidden since the foundation of the world. S. By the words of the Gospel may our sins be blotted out.

    The tiny mustard seed grew into a sheltering tree and a source of food. Christ’s Mystical Body grows, draws men of every race into brotherhood, and feeds them with truth and love and sacramental life.     I've edited in an eighteenth century sermon of Fr Franz Hunolt SJ read by an unknown American, perhaps a priest. I think it was the older custom, at least with a Low Mass to deliver the sermon after the liturgy, which catered to those whose duties did not allow the timw.

    "In those days after that tribulation
    the sun will be darkened,
    and the moon will not give its light,
    and the stars will be falling from the sky,
    and the powers in the heavens will be shaken.

    "And then they will see 'the Son of Man coming in the clouds'
    with great power and glory,
    and then he will send out the angels
    and gather his elect from the four winds,
    from the end of the earth to the end of the sky.

    "Learn a lesson from the fig tree.
    When its branch becomes tender and sprouts leaves,
    you know that summer is near.
    In the same way, when you see these things happening,
    know that he is near, at the gates.
    Amen, I say to you,
    this generation will not pass away
    until all these things have taken place.
    Heaven and earth will pass away,
    but my words will not pass away.

    "But of that day or hour, no one knows,
    neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father."

    13:24-25 Jesus speaks of cosmic disturbances in the manner of the prophets. • These are not literal predictions of heavenly convulsions or an atmospheric meltdown, but they evoke OT oracles of judgment that foretell the downfall of pagan kingdoms

    I like to think of it as a thread where posters can if they wish post their thoughts and reflections on the current gospel. Basically a place to reflect. Someone posts a transcript and others can reflect in person or via post on that if they wish.

    If there were discussions about the gospel, the thread would make sense but I don't see any discussion.

    On the last Sunday of the liturgical year our thoughts are directed to the great truths of the ending of the world and the coming of Christ in judgement. The Gospel describes the events that dread day. God has given us redemption through the blood of Christ: if we call on Him, He will hear us and bring back from captivity. Therefore, if we would have the shelter of divine mercy at the ned we must strive to cooperate with divine grace. The Roman Missal in Latin and English for every day of the year, conforming with the latest decrees of the Holy See, edited by an Irish bishop, with supplements for Ireland and other English speaking countries, Dublin, M.H. Gill and Son, Ltd., 1938, p. 759.

    I see it as combining the readings with some resources to ruminate on the Sunday Mass. I try when I can to supplement the little precis found in one of the missals I own with other resources.

    The Tridentine Rite Blog provides an excellent liturgical account of the traditional Mass for each Sunday, posted a day or two after. St Lawrence Press also publish an Ordo which largely follows the Roman Missal largely as of 1939, well before Mgsr Bugnini as Secretary for the Congregration of Rites from 1948 spurred the series of ever more problematic liturgical changes.

    Jerusalem or Sion, a figure of the Church, is called upon to rejoice in the coming of the Messias and to prepare herself. This explains the choice of the station of the Church of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem, built in Rome by St Helena especially to contain the relics of the Passion. The Introit, Gradual and Communion make mention of the Holy City. The Gospel tells us of St John. The Gospel tells us of St. John the Baptist whose special mission was to prepare the Jews for the coming of the Messias.

    This Sunday, known as Gaudete Sunday from the first word of the Introit is entirely given to joy, because as St Paul says in the Epistle: ‘the Lord is nigh.’ The station as on all Sundays of Advent is at one of the chief Roman basilicas; today it is at that of St Peter, first built by Constantine over the tomb of the Saint.

And he went into all the region about the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, The voice of one crying in the desert, ‘Make ready the way of the Lord, make straight His paths. She was of a great age, having lived with her husband seven years from her maidenhood, and by herself as a widow to eighty-four years. She never left the temple, with fastings and prayers worshipping night and day. And coming up at that very hour, she began to give praise to the Lord, and spoke of Him to all who were awaiting the redemption of Jerusalem. And when they had fulfilled all things as prescribed in the Law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, into their own town of Nazareth. And the Child grew and became strong. He was full of wisdom and the grace of God was upon Him.

    Each year Jesus’ parents went to Jerusalem for the feast
    of Passover,
    and when he was twelve years old,
    they went up according to festival custom.
    After they had completed its days, as they were returning,
    the boy Jesus remained behind in Jerusalem,
    but his parents did not know it.
    Thinking that he was in the caravan,
    they journeyed for a day
    and looked for him among their relatives and acquaintances,
    but not finding him,
    they returned to Jerusalem to look for him.
    After three days they found him in the temple,
    sitting in the midst of the teachers,
    listening to them and asking them questions,
    and all who heard him were astounded
    at his understanding and his answers.
    When his parents saw him,

    “Son, why have you done this to us?

    The Church proposes for our imitation the virtues of Jesus, Mary and Joseph in their hidden and lowly life at Nazareth, especially the humility of the Son of God, shown in His obedience to His mother and foster father.

    The people were filled with expectation,

    whether John might be the Christ.
    John answered them all, saying,

    but one mightier than I is coming.

    After all the people had been baptized

    Lesson from the letter of St Paul the Apostle to the Romans

    Rom XII. 6-16


    Brethren: We have gifts differing according to the grace that has been given us, such as prophecy to be used according to the proportion of faith; or ministry, in ministering; or he who teaches, in teaching; he who exhorts, in exhorting; he who gives, in simplicity; he who presides, with carefulness; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness. Let love be without pretense. Hate what is evil, hold to what is good. Love one another with honor. Be not slothful in zeal; be fervent in spirit, serving the Lord, rejoicing in hope. Be patient in tribulation, persevering in prayer. Share the needs of the saints, practicing hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep. Be of one mind towards one another. Do not set your mind on high things but condescend to the lowly.

    John II. 1-11

    Wt that time, a marriage took place at Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Now Jesus too was invited to the marriage, and also His disciples. And the wine having run short, the mother of Jesus said to Him, They have no wine. And Jesus said to her, What would you have me do, woman? My hour has not yet come. His mother said to the attendants, Do whatever He tells you. Now six stone water-jars were placed there, after the Jewish manner of purification, each holding two or three measures. Jesus said to them, Fill the jars with water. And they filled them to the brim. And Jesus said to them, Draw out now, and take to the chief steward. And they took it to him. Now when the chief steward had tasted the water after it had become wine, not knowing whence it was - though the attendants who had drawn the water knew, - the chief steward called the bridegroom, and said to him, Every man at first sets forth the good wine, and when they have drunk freely, then that which is poorer. But you have kept the good wine until now. This first of His signs Jesus worked at Cana of Galilee; and He manifested His glory, and His disciples believed in Him.

    Our Lord at the wedding feast in Cana of Galilee graciously worked the miracle of changing water into wine prompted by Mary, His mother. This establishes Mary, the mother of God, as our Mediatrix.

    Gospel JN 2:1-11
    There was a wedding at Cana in Galilee,
    and the mother of Jesus was there.
    Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the wedding.
    When the wine ran short,
    the mother of Jesus said to him,
    "They have no wine."
    And Jesus said to her,
    "Woman, how does your concern affect me?
    My hour has not yet come."
    His mother said to the servers,
    "Do whatever he tells you."
    Now there were six stone water jars there for Jewish ceremonial washings,
    each holding twenty to thirty gallons.
    Jesus told the them,
    "Fill the jars with water."
    So they filled them to the brim.
    Then he told them,
    "Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter."
    So they took it.
    And when the headwaiter tasted the water that had become wine,
    without knowing where it came from
    — although the servers who had drawn the water knew —,
    the headwaiter called the bridegroom and said to him,
    "Everyone serves good wine first,
    and then when people have drunk freely, an inferior one;
    but you have kept the good wine until now."
    Jesus did this as the beginning of his signs at Cana in Galilee
    and so revealed his glory,
    and his disciples began to believe in him.

    Matt viii. 1-13

    W t that time, when Jesus had come down from the mountain, great crowds followed Him. And behold, a leper came up and worshipped Him, saying, Lord, if You will, You can make me clean. And stretching forth His hand Jesus touched him, saying, I will; be made clean. And immediately his leprosy was cleansed. And Jesus said to him, See that you tell no one; but go, show yourself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, for a witness to them. Now when He had entered Capharnaum, there came to Him a centurion who entreated Him, saying, Lord, my servant is lying sick in the house, paralyzed, and is grievously afflicted. Jesus said to him, I will come and cure him. But in answer the centurion said, Lord, I am not worthy that You should come under my roof; but only say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I too am a man subject to authority, and have soldiers subject to me; and I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it. And when Jesus heard this, He marveled, and said to those who were following Him, Amen I say to you, I have not found such great faith in Israel. And I tell you that many will come from the east and from the west and will feast with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven, but the children of the kingdom will be put forth into the darkness outside; there will be the weeping, and the gnashing of teeth. Then Jesus said to the centurion, Go your way; as you have believed, so be it done to you. And the servant was healed in that hour.

    The centurion asked only one word of Jesus so that his servant could be cured. Jesus’ word will likewise heal our souls if we approach Him with faith and humility.

    Gospel LK 1:1-4; 4:14-21
    Since many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the events
    that have been fulfilled among us,
    just as those who were eyewitnesses from the beginning
    and ministers of the word have handed them down to us,
    I too have decided,
    after investigating everything accurately anew,
    to write it down in an orderly sequence for you,
    most excellent Theophilus,
    so that you may realize the certainty of the teachings
    you have received.

    Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit,
    and news of him spread throughout the whole region.
    He taught in their synagogues and was praised by all.

    He came to Nazareth, where he had grown up,
    and went according to his custom
    into the synagogue on the sabbath day.
    He stood up to read and was handed a scroll of the prophet Isaiah.
    He unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was written:
    The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
    because he has anointed me
    to bring glad tidings to the poor.
    He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives
    and recovery of sight to the blind,
    to let the oppressed go free,
    and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord.
    Rolling up the scroll, he handed it back to the attendant and sat down,
    and the eyes of all in the synagogue looked intently at him.
    He said to them,
    "Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing."

    1:1-4 Luke opens with a prologue and personal dedication. Stylistically, he follows a conventional format that was used to preface historical works in the Hellenistic world. Luke likewise sets out to record history, not as a stale collection of facts and figures, but as an evangelistic presentation of Jesus' life and mission. Back
