Notre Dame remain unbeaten. They always play tough against Irish.

Out if the AP top ten the following were beaten tonight.

No.2 Georgia
No.6 West Virginia
No.7 Washington
No.8 Penn State

There'll be a major shake up. Notre Dame will enter the top 4. LSU will be back in the top ten. Probably Florida and Michigan too.

Fun day of football, looking forward to seeing the rankings. The Irish pulled it out of the fire but they were lucky that the Pitt kicker was on an off day. There's no margin for error or bad days at the office, so nice to get through the trap game that Pitt always was going to be, but they can't afford to start so slow on offense again.

Lads - it'll be a travesty if ND sneak into the top 4 and keep a legitimate contender out due to their very easy schedule. In fairness to Notre Dame, they always schedule tough but this season its a terrible slate and they really are not impressing me. The Michigan game not withstanding its been pretty easy and they have struggled with some very poor teams.

The way things are shaping up we'll end up with a Big 10 winner, SEC winner, Notre Dame and Clemson.

Notre Dame and Clemson are average teams with soft schedules in my opinion.

Notre Dame beat no.7 Stanford too.
Pittsburgh is always a tough game the Irish. They beat a ranked Hokies too.
They still have to face Northwestern who have beaten Nebraska and Michigan State the last two weeks. They also have to go to Southern California to face a team which may have turned the corner having beaten a ranked Colorado at the weekend for their third win on the bounce. Only thing that makes their schedule look worse than normal is the travails of FSU which makes the schedule look a bit weaker but certainly should not stop the making the playoffs.

I think UCF have a great chance to get in this season too.

Stanford are having a poor season, Pitt are terrible, Virginia Tech lost to Old Dominion, Wake Forests are below average, Vanderbilt and Ball State are basically walkovers - or should be for a top 4 team...

The rest of the slate is probably even weaker - Navy, Nothwestern (you can't use a lucky win against the worst Nebraska team in history as a barometer) and Fla State are on major down years. The USC game is becoming more interesting but they are miles off the top 10 and Syracuse are nothing more than plucky on their day.

The Michigan game is the only thing justifying ND's ranking IMO. I think Michigan have improved a lot since.

I'd be putting in 2 SEC teams regardless - look at LSU - they'll probably finish with 2 losses, but possibly end up with 3 top 10 wins and 5/6 wins against ranked teams. The difference in strength of schedule is silly. Same goes for Georgia if thy go 11-1 and get to the Champ game.

At the moment in college football it appears the SEC is further ahead than ever. The ACC/Pac 12 and Big 12 are miles away and I think that the Big 10 is top heavy. 3/4 quality teams and then a lot of average.

I genuinely love UCF but its hard to leave out a quality P5 team for them. The SOS is just not there in the AAC and it never will be. They'd get chewed up in a P5 conference nd the committee knows that.

You are giving credit for SEC teams beating ranked opponents but not giving Notre Dame credit for beating Stanford who were unbeaten and ranked 7 when they met. Stanford had won all their games to that point including the overtime win over Oregon. What happens after they were beaten by the Irish is of no concern.

Interesting that you bring up LSU. Florida beat them and came back to beat Vanderbilt on Saturday. Notre Dame also beat Vandy. We can use this as a measuring stick, I know it's not a great one, but it suggests that there is nothing between any of these teams. The unbeaten one deserves to be ranked higher imo.

Tim Tebow was making this same argument against ND, and in favour of Georgia et al. Says ND have only played one ranked team, Michigan, so therefore haven't proved they're good enough.

He didn't seem to notice that until this week Georgia had not played ANY ranked teams. But that didn't seem to matter. Nor does it matter that they actually lost when they did play one. Alabama have played one ranked team, as have Ohio State. So why is that a stick to beat ND with, but not the others?

It's not a "travesty", it's the way it's always worked and will always work. Notre Dame's schedule is falling relatively kind this year, but it's a full national Division 1 slate with an intention towards difficulty (Michigan, Virginia Tech, Stanford, Florida State, USC). There is also the reality that staying perfect is extraordinarily difficult for student athletes. It seems this time every year the 'well if X wins out they'll be in ahead of Y' and inevitably X *doesn't* win out.

Michigan are ranked 6th and Stanford and USC are receiving votes and may creep back into the top 25 by season's end - so there will be good wins by season's end.

Yeah I can understand that an SEC team with one loss should get in ahead of an ND team with one loss, and I know ND have made their bed as regards staying out of a conference and not having a championship game, but if ND are undefeated that should be it this year, I don't see anything on the SEC teams' schedules that indicates they shouldn't be.

Just wanted to come back on this because I didn't want to sound like I was going after you or anything about it. You're definitely right that ND have struggled in a few games where they should have been handy winners, and I don't think anyone here is claiming they are the best team in the country just now. But on the other hand they've been dominant against very strong teams like Michigan and Standford (the latter was a top ten team before that performance), so it's a little unfair I think to only hold ND accountable for the games they were a bit poorer in and not give credit where it's due. Very hard to stay at peak levels every week, so far they've peaked when they need to against big opponents. Going by their remaining schedule if they go undefeated I don't see how it would be any less deserved than OSU or, say, LSU going in.

It's a tough spot for Texas but the top four have to win out or I think Texas get in.

If the Buckeyes win out they are in but if they lose to Michigan I'm not sure either of them get in because Notre Dame beat Michigan. Clemson have to beat NC State and it looks like they will win all their other games and they are in. Bama look unstoppable and Notre Dame must win out to stay in.

I've a feeling that Texas will make it if they win out.

Not much on the box so I said I’d tune in to watch Alabama for the first time this year. Thought it would be close enough but it was game over after 5 minutes. Can’t see anyone beating Bama the way things stand.

LSU always seem to save their best for Alabama. They did very well to hold them to a field goal on the last drive but they are still down 9-0 and don't have an offense.

Irish beat Northwestern by 10. Very important result there rankings wise because they beat a top 10 ranked Wisconsin and a ranked Michigan State and only lost by 3 to Michigan.

That was definitely a big one for the Irish, it was a real potential banana skin. There was a good chance they'd be turned over there. They'll have the playoffs firmly in their sights now, although the FSU game would still worry me. Bad and all as the noles are this season, they'll rumble someone down the stretch.

Watched the Buckeyes take care of business against the Spartans earlier, tough close game for a long time before Ohio State got it together.
I watched the Sooners get lucky and beat the Cowboys who went for two with 1 minute left in the fourth and list by 1. Great game.
I'm watching the Irish now against the Seminoles, they've had a pick already and Wimbush just passed it to Boykin for the go ahead TD. Very nice pass from Wimbush who is my main concern tonight with Book out. He looked good on that first pass though.

42-13 final score, great win for the Irish and a good night for Wimbush. Two games on the road now, tough one next week against the high scoring Syracuse and then the Trojans at the Coliseum. If they win both they are in the playoffs.

Notre Dame thump Syracuse, Alabama win big in the second half after going in at halftime level with The Citadel. Clemson win big too, Michigan win, Georgia win, Oklahoma win, LSU win, Washington State is 55-14 up at halftime over Arizona!
West Virginia lose to the OK State Cowboys, Ohio State beat Maryland in overtime and UCF win 38-14 over Cincinnati.
Might be a bit of a shake up with UCF possibly moving past both the Buckeyes and West Virginia.

Texas holds it's in destiny in it's hands and could get into the big 12. Beating IOWA State in a 15 v 16th team ranking might push us inside the top 12

Haha maybe. Actually the weather these times is fantastic here, a sunny 18 degrees, but I miss the cold winter you get further north. And as proud as UNT football might be, twas nice being able to walk by a busy notre Dame training field on your way to work. Maybe that's what's getting to me!

Uninspiring start from ND, they improved in the second quarter but they looked like a team with not much to play for to start out, rather than a team with a serious shot at the big time. Running game hasn't been able to get going at all. I think this thing of struggling to put away poor teams early is the reason there's so many doubts still hanging over this team. I don't think those doubts are correct though, but they need to be putting it on the board. Second quarter was more like it but they were unfortunate not to get a second score on the final drive. Need to get boykin into it more as well, he's been fairly well held today

Incredible game, watched the highlights this morning. Favourite part was the LSU coach getting soaked with Gatorade when they thought they had it won in regular time, he then had to go through 7 periods of OT wet and sticky

Question about OT, were they not allowed to take 1 point conversions after a certain number of OT periods? Texas had 2 chances to win it with a 1 point conversion but went for 2 on both occasions, including the winning conversion.

I believe after the second period you have to go for two points
