Oh my word. The photos are terrific. Who will dare say it now that Joaquin Phoenix definitely does not look the part for this movie? I have no doubts now that Joaquin Phoenix will do brilliantly here if he pulls off the role of playing the Joker. I cannot f*cking wait for this. :D

What the name change ? Doesn't make any sense unless they're trying to say that Jack Napier isn't the first "Joker" !!

I don't think The Joker ever really had a name? Jack Napier originated in the Tim Burton film. Might have been used again since, but it's not his one true name. As far as I know.

Agreed with this. Interesting images so far and I'm looking forward to seeing Phoenix play the part, but I can't imagine a Joker without a Batman. What would be the point?

Yup, I mean they could go for some anarchist-anti-hero angle, but again that's not really The Joker as we know him. Maybe, applying a Devil's Advocate argument, it could be that if this is all somewhat an 'Elseworlds' style production, then allowing a reframing of the Joker into a 'chaotic good, ish' kind of character.

    Zazie Beetz will play

Todd Philips is sharing too much. Maybe it'll quench some hype or else put it into overdrive. Either way, I think he's oversharing. I don't trust him as a director to do justice to a Joker movie.

Philips said himself he's little choice really given the amount of paps around the set. That's why the first look released last Friday was a genius move as he knew Phoenix would be filmed in full make up the very next day.

Yeah; any geek centric film with location shooting is going to get snapped by passers by, so necessitates releasing promo stuff ASAP. In this case it has been a good idea cos it definitely feels like there's a growing sense of goodwill towards the production.

Just on the subject of preempting set-photos, you also gotta factor in videos too; as this one demonstrates, there's still some semblance of secrecy attempted, as the crew smuggle Phoenix back into a blacked-out building. The glamour of Hollywood!

I agree he is brilliant ,
But with the Joker it could possible be to early , Ledger performance was amazing people saying he only got credit cause he died are stupid, He played Joker amazingly, it was perfect he was deranged and manic and had no reasoning with , He got the character of the joker perfect

The only thing I'd say about "overratedness" is that the Dark Night as a film is probably overrated as a film because of how good Ledger is in it. The bits without him are mostly so-so, and I don't think the ending, after Rachel's death, does it justice.

I don't doubt Phoenix will bring some essence of malevolent eccentricity to the role, but the real needle to thread here will be what the narrative is going for. If they overplay the idea of 'sympathetic' joker, turned to evil by circumstance or fate, it would do the character a disservice. But then Joker also only works with Batman as the conceptual, emotional foil - without the latter it's hard to see what other angle you take.

I was thinking something like the Silence of the Lambs in terms of the dynamic where he's not quite the "bad guy", despite being a monster, and he's definitely not the protagonist. A relatively straight character, like a cop or a lawyer, who's either trying to catch him, or they're both involved with a third party who's the primary antagonist, and the joker has the range to both feel sympathetic but then pull the rug from under you.

Wow, that looked exactly like I hoped it might; a gritty, 70s era thriller; Phillips had said he wanted to make a peak-Scorcese crime epic, and he may just have pulled it off. I'm impressed and this has suddenly shot up the queue of DC/Marvel material I'm looking out for.

And it looks like it might be pulling a reverse 'King of Comedy' with the inclusion of DeNiro...

    Wow, that looks so good.

Completely different kind of comicbook movie, definitely for adults I presume as it doesn’t look lollipop marvel light.

It also doesn't appear to look angsty-dark either, playing it straight and tragic as opposed to that superficial grimdark you got with Synder's DC films.

For those looking for a more HD version, it's on YouTube now too:

Snyder really is marmite to movie goers. I really enjoyed his DC movies (MOS & BvS) and movies in general.

It feels like it’s touching on every type of Joker we’ve seen.

    Very cool.

When I heard Joaquin Phoenix was attached to this, I kind of felt there must be something about it. Doesn't seem like a role he would take on lightly. The trailer looks very intersting. Serious Taxi Driver vibes. Looks like more of a character study than anything else? I'm interested to see the finished product.

could we not just watch a Scorcese film? I ask of Philips

Taxi driver is mentioned on the wiki page

I am intrigued by this trailer.

I'd have to echo the idea it's got a more Taxi Driver vibe to it. I presume this will get progressively darker as the movie goes on to show how the madness develops.

When I think of Todd Phillips and that movie I keep seeing him on the coach trying to suck your ones foot!

Funny thing is that Chris Nolan hadnt done much before Batman. I am hoping Phillips take is as equally surprising.

Watched Nolan's Batman trilogy a few months ago, I am not sure that level of quality will be surpassed for sometime.

Nothing's stopping you? Plenty of movies - good, great and bad - take inspiration from other sources and it's laudable that at least some 'superhero' films are being allowed the leg room to explore different styles and approaches. Nothing wrong with that.

Didn't realise the director had such a eclectic back-catalogue.

I love the Hangover II. :P

No reason he can't change his leanings.

    ROAD TRIP

Yikes :( Edit: Wait...I got confused with that Euro Trip bullshít. Road Trip...I actually loved that at the time. I haven't seen it in well over 10 years, but it was very popular and of its time, same as the early American Pie movies. While popularity isn't a measure of quality, I wouldn't consider Road Trip a stinker. There's hit and miss moments in that movie and it does what it says on the tin - It is actually a decent road trip comedy. /edit

He directed and co-wrote Old School, one of my favourite comedies.

It is very hard to gauge from Phillips' back-catalogue just how good or bad this movie could be. We could use examples from previous movies to opine that this will be great, and examples to opine that it could be poor.

It's more the involvement of Pheonix which had me optimistic at first, but since then the official promo media is adding to that optimism. This could turn out to be one of the better ones of Phillip's filmography.

Either way, this has my attention and my money next October. I didn't think I'd be saying that about a DC movie for a long time to come.

This first trailer for Joker is excellent. I would love to see more of this in the cinema as more trailers are released. Good move here DC.

Yes, yes on loop for a while I think

Well my expectations have gone from zilch to quite high on the basis of that trailer alone.
It's like Scorsese meets Terry Gilliam.
I'm still baffled by DC's insistence on making villain's origin stories before their hero's and the generally disjointed state of the DCEU but this at least looks like a film with the potential to stand on it's own.

Genuinely excited for this. The trailer has done exactly what a trailer should do ....... tease.

Really high hopes for this. :)

Not what I was expecting at all. Kinda ****s all over Nolan’s “realistic” take on Batman’s characters. And I say that as someone who absolutely loves Ledger’s interpretation.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,909 ✭✭✭Gwynplaine

I've watched it 5 times now. Looks brilliant. Phoenix is an excellent choice.

If only they could erase that Suicide Squad from history. Absolutely brutal, and Leto's Joker is an abomination.

Is this supposed to be the origin of Heath Ledger's Joker or is this a different Joker character?

    Different, it's its own beast.

That's good. Ledger's Joker is best left as an enigma, especially considering his contradicting stories of how he got his scars. The writers seemed to purposely give him no backstory and it should remain like that for his character.

I don't what they are trying to say by only casting animal rights activists as Joker...ledger, Leto, now Phoenix :pac:
I would not care about this apart from Joaquin Phoenix being so talented, looks really good!
