But it is a bit ridiculous to say just one player is a "serious talent".

you get maybe 1 or 2 serious talents every year, sometimes 3. the 2011 team was full of familiar names, other than Furlong and Henderson i'm not any of the others were serious talents. it all depends what your definition is, mine would be that they would be talented enough to become long standing Irish Internationals, this year's crop is no different and I'm not sure aherne would be in my consideration.

but "serious talent" is so vague. What makes you a serious talent and what isnt a serious talent?

Anyway in response to fellas question in youths thread. There is two divisions not sure of who qualifies. In main division UCC well clear in 1st. Garryowen and con will be 2nd and 3rd. Order still to be confirmed. Shannon 4th and cookies 5th
If like previous years they have winner of 2nd division playing one of the division 1 sides for an all Ireland spor then that will be old Crescent or bruff who are joint top of 2nd division.

The goal would be to get as many professional players as possible. Each year would be different. The graduation to pro rugby and the quality wouldn't be known for 4 to 6 yrs. Some years the % would be fine and others years not so good.

Chances the u20 world cup goes ahead look slim rn.. Same with the rest of the 6N

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,703 ✭✭✭arsebiscuits1

That would be an absolute disaster for so many players.

A lot of players probably have their various academy contracts sewn up but there's a lot who don't. They'd need as much game time as possible to 1) get as much footage together for any potential suitors and 2) this will be the only world cup/ the highest level that many of them will play at. Such a shame to not be able to play it

Are all the u20 games cancelled?

I see everything but Ireland v italy is still on

    https://www.sixnationsrugby.com/under-20/under-20s-fixtures-results/

I don't fancy watching u20 for those teams

Wales leading England 14-5. 45th minute. England with a scrum on Welsh 5m.
    Anyone watching

Will u20 match v France be cancelled?

U18 6 nations tournament in Paris in April?

Surely these could be played behind closed doors?

They're still awaiting confirmation on the women's and U20 games.

There seems to be little to no appetite from the unions to play any games behind closed doors at any level bar the Italians originally. I wouldn't be surprised if they are called off though.

Disappointing, but unsurprising. I’m not sure who this would apply to in the Ireland squad, but I feel for any guys who were depending on making an impression to grab an academy place.

Munster, Ulster and Connacht should really look at some of the players not being offered an spot in Leinster's academy.

O'Reilly might be a good fit at Munster. Corkery is a promising young outhalf and might benefit more, say in Ulster's academy. The same with McCarthy in the second row.

Corkery & McCarthy will still be involved with leinster next season. If they don't get full academy places next season they'll be in the sub academy.. Both are in college in dublin and u20 next season. Corkery isnt 19 until December IIRC.

Rumoured McCarthy may get a full academy offer next session wait and see.

O'Reilly could well look at another province with Connacht being the most obvious, but wouldnt surprise me to see him go in the direction of 7's.

Thought McCarthy looked brutish at times and played very well for a u19. Leinster already have quite a few young 2nd rows, but I think there's a good chance McCarty could end up better than a couple and I wouldn't think they would want to lose him easily.

Leinster might have a bit of a log-jam in the back three very soon. Smith looks nailed on for an academy place and there are at least three very good wingers/fullbacks at u19 level who are more than good enough for an academy place somewhere. Then there's Turner, O'Sullivan and Sylvester already in the set up.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 490 ✭✭Scottmactom

Agree on McCarthy, which is why he could join leinster academy officially next season.

I dunno about log-jam in the back three, Silvester/O'Sullivan are going into year 3 of the academy and haven't really shown much to date, need to make an impression on their return to the setup. Turner looks to be viewed as more a 13 at the moment.

I'd consider there to be two standout back three players at u19 level at the moment from a leinster point of view and both are at least a year away physically from being ready for pro rugby in my eyes.

Right now if you had to pick a back three from leinster academy players and underage prospects, you'd have to choose Smith and the two U19 prospects over a back three of Silvester, O'Sullivan and Turner IMO.

Also given leinsters somewhat spotty record in developing top tier back three players, Larmour excluded, it's cant be assumed Smith or the U19 players will reach their potential.

I get the attraction of staying in Leinster, with college etc and I accept both Corkery and McCarthy are young. Leaving aside club loyalties, wouldn't it be beneficial if say Ulster approached both and offered them s full time academy place and a clear path to game and untimately a faster path to a professional contract. Let's be honest, Leinster are stacked at outhalf and second row.
Curiosity, who are the two standout U19 back three? I feel its a position Leinter and Munster could add a little more depth.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 490 ✭✭Scottmactom

The attraction of playing for your home province is huge, Ulster can offer the chance at potentially progressing faster but theres no guarantee. I just don't see it being appealing enough to leave their current situation with leinster etc.

Plus any offer from Ulster would likely result in both of them getting academy offers from Leinster and again your can't just write off that these players grew up wanting to play for Leinster, not Ulster.

Wouldn't be the first time Leinster underage players were approached and wouldn't be the last. Can't think of many who took the risk of leaving when staying with Leinster was still an option.

Cosgrave and Osborne and both are Leinster bound.

Munster have their own back three players coming through.

Thanks, who do you think are the likely standouts which positions do you think there might be the most competition in?

And is Soroka seen as a 2nd row long-term for Leinster?

very strong competition in backrow.. good competition in the centre aswell too.

good depth at hooker and 9.

concerns about competition at prop and depth at lock.

On soroka, I think leinster are looking at him as a blindside long term, very highly rated in leinster.

  • Registered Users Posts: 24,258 ✭✭✭✭Buer

With the prevalence of young locks in Leinster (Ryan x 2, Baird, Dunne), I can see Soroka playing blindside at senior level. He's quite light for someone of his height currently. No doubt he'll put on 8-10kg if he goes through a full academy cycle but I don't see him ever being a 115kg lock whilst guys like Charlie Ryan (108kg after 1 year in academy) and Jack Dunne (112kg after 2 years in the academy) are likely to be those types of guys.

I can see him competing for the likes of Josh Murphy (who is taller, according to stats on Leinster/Irish rugby profiles) to be the line out option in the backrow, mirroring the likes of Kevin McLaughlin which would be no poor result for him.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 490 ✭✭Scottmactom

Yeah Soroka could easily start at 6 in this team.. if some other locks emerge.. but due to the large number of quality backrowers, I'd see him probably playing at 4.
